I'm just gonna say it. The best selling point of a Clutterbug show for Netflix is that you can help EVERYONE. I think Marie Kondo only helps crickets, and the Home Edit only helps bees, not to mention the latter only seems to work with celebrities, and does it FOR them (like of course it's easy to organize a massive walk in shoe ROOM), which is not realistic for the rest of us. Your potential audience is SO much bigger. I think your emmy is there. HGTV is a dinosaur, that fakes their house hunting shows. They have zero credibility these days.

When my kids were little, one day I was cleaning like mad, and my six-year-old son said, "Oh, boy! Grandma's coming!" Indignantly, I replied, "That is NOT the only time I clean!" Looking fearful, he said, "Okay. But IS Grandma coming?" With a deep sigh, I replied, " ...yes." 🤣

I finally realized my kids couldn’t see the Lego pieces they wanted in a deep bin, so they would dump them out all over the floor each time they played. Invested in the shallow, wide underbed-style bins and NO MORE DUMPING! Yay! :-)

On the lego topic - When I was a kid we had so many legos and many were tiny. Those are not fun to step on.
We kept them in an old fitted sheet, in a bin. When they came out of the bin, they stayed on the sheet. Super easy cleanup!!!

I think decluttering and organizing can be a lonely time, so folks appreciate your presence with them. As for me (living alone), I put my ear buds in, replay back-to-back inspiring You Tube videos of you and Dana White recoaching me on how to do it (my style is a mix of y'all's styles). Listening chases away the loneliness and remotivates me to make a lot of progress quickly. Maybe that tip will help someone else, too. Be blessed!

CASS YOU SAVED MY LIFE! So I'm 2 years into following you. I've always been highly organized i dont have a junk drawer and never have. Your voive and approach was a life saver! I lost my job and 2 days before the world shut down from covid. I found you durring that week (in a spiral of depression) and printed your hug your home challenge and one of the others I did them at the same time one in the morning and one in the afternoon. It kept my depression at bay so I could do the things I needed to keep going. I would listen to your old ytubs while cleaning and it movitated me to keep going with EVERYTHING not just cleaning. Keep up your great work and know you are changing Lives! ☺️

Hey Cas, idk if you remember my message about overwhelmed with cleaning as a mom of 5 young children. But I wanted to share with you that I recently had a revelation that changed the game. I've been decluttering the way it works for me as a lady bug while living with butterflies, and it would work for 2 weeks and then get overwhelming again. So I decided to take a temporary perspective. I ended up minimalizing my kids things, since they don't know how to take care of all of their things. I then also decided to keep specific special toys in the specific child's room (my oldest boy now keeps his Lego bin and Pokemon cards in his room), rather than all being in the rec room. I think too many toys overwhelmed them and so, 5 kids all playing pull out something, forget to put it away, nad then all pull out a second toy. That adds up to 10 different toys in once space at one time. Then when it was time to clean up, they would get overwhelmed cleaning up. By removing half the toys and then moving some to their personal rooms, they had less on one space at one time. My second revelation was holding on the donated items. These were items that I needed to give away to a friend but kept forgetting to. So I cleared out an area in the garage and I'm storing these items there until I can donate them to my church garage sale. I told my friend she can just take what she needs at the garage sale for her daughter if she see something (my mom runs it). That way I'm not holding on to it for weeks at a time. I can take the time to sort the items (and clean them up) before taking them to the church shed. So in a nutshell I learned 1) temporary minimalize until everyone is more responsible 2) break down the amounts to other areas 3) sometimes just say no to donating, whether you throw it away, or create temporary donate area to make one big trip.
I'm not going to lie, I've thrown away a lot but I can't allow things to run my life anymore.
*Side note, I also invested in a countertop dishwasher. #Gamechanger

He does the chores he can because he doing adult things and being independent when he can is super good for his mental health. So, for others in any sort of interabled relationship- figure out what you can both do, talk about realistic expectations, and assign chores from there. It’s not “getting a pass”, it’s making it work with what ya got! 😊

When we replaced appliances last year we ended up choosing ones that are wifi enabled. While it still feels "fancy and not me" my washer telling me "its time to run a machine clean" or that a load is done or the whatever is whatever makes my butterfly 💙 so happy!! The one less thing I have to track is worth everything. Confirmation was yesterday when the electrician cut power to the house to do work and washer had 6 minutes left! I just new after 4 hrs of power off I would have to restart the load. Power came back on and the washer picked up where it left off and it was so excited!! The appliances also tell on my kids so I get texts when chorea can be done. 😂

Mother of blind kid here. Blindness doesn’t preclude someone from wiping a counter or otherwise cleaning up after themselves. The technique used for wiping a counter or table is to start at one corner, then go forward and back, moving over with each stroke so that you end up at the other end of the table, and the entire surface is clean. My daughter was wiping tables at her school in tenth grade. He may need training to learn these kinds of life skills, and Cas is correct that there are instructors who teach this. Contact your local office of the blind or the National Federation of the Blind. They have schools all over the country that teaches life skills to blind adults.

Quick note about preparing for moving: It might be easier just to buy some color dots at the dollar store and just put the dots on the boxes to coordinate with the rooms. A package of the variety pack of dots means you can have one in every room you’re going to be packing in, plus there should be multiple so you can put the color tag on the top and the sides of the box and it saves time writing on two or three different places.
(PS - the leftover dots at the end can be used to mark cupboards closets or areas that you have already emptied so you don’t double check the same drawer or closet over and over again just to make sure it’s empty)….

Watching remodeling shows then just becomes a pipe dream. And, I found that the chaos created by remodeling projects has never been addressed. HGTV is too top-heavy on remodel shows and lacks decluttering and organizing, where most viewers live. I scheduled myself around viewing Clean Sweep. Sad when it stopped. For the toilet cleaning, I just use baking soda and vinegar - flush the toilet so that the baking soda will stick, sprinkle generously in the whole bowl, spray/pour (spraying will keep it in place w/o washing the baking soda off the sides until you're ready to) vinegar on the baking soda/into the water, let sit for a minute (can let sit for longer if you want), scrub, rinse (flush it), repeat as necessary. If there's a stubborn ring, do the aforementioned process, then coat the damp/wet toilet brush with borax and scrub the ring; might take a couple times of scrubbing with borax if the ring is really bad (flush in between if doing more than one round). I've never had it not work, and it's a win-win: 1) it comes out sparkling clean every... single... time..., and 2) I don't have to use any chemicals (I have extreme chemical sensitivity, and some of them are downright allergies).

I’m going to file this tip away for when we’re out of purchased cleaner. I know someone who used muriatic acid to clean toilet stains, and he said that it’s been harder to clean ever since. As a renter who lives in an area with hard water, I’m always amazed at the difference in toilet cleaning needs in different homes. Some toilets are easy to keep clean, and others seem like they’re always dirty.

    • @SnowySpiritRuby
      @SnowySpiritRuby 2 года назад +2

@@username00009 You're welcome. While it might not necessarily work for absolutely everything, sometimes going back to the basics is the most effective method, and what I outlined above just happens to be the particular regimen I've found to work for me. I also keep hydrogen peroxide and sodium percarbonate (oxiclean, basically) on hand for some of the extremely tough stains on white surfaces (like the floor of my shower).
I also use baking soda, borax, and vinegar for laundry as well - powdered Charlie's Soap, borax, and baking soda in the drum as detergent, and white vinegar as the fabric softener. Clothes never come out of the dryer smelling like vinegar (sometimes they do out of the washer, especially if I manage to catch it between rinse cycles and add more vinegar, but never the dryer), and they're soft and never bother my allergies and extreme sensitivities because there's no chemicals or artificial fragrances.

During declutter day 22, Ran across 1993Junior League docs, on a course I attended called "Dimensions to change". It sounds like exactly the positive process of your course: new behaviours, new beliefs and understandings, new norms and values, relationships, anxiety, resistance, conflict, external and internal pressure, adult learning, personal growth and development. Purged those paper docs...

Thank you for the encouragement to get rid of items that other people in your family want you to keep. There is this cabinet that my parents made 30 years ago and they gave it to me 3-4 years ago. I didn’t want it but didn’t have the courage to say no and so it has moved from PA to RI and back to PA with us. I have decided to just sell it at a garage sale.

Just watched the recorded version of your live chat. Thank you so much for all the help you have given me. I started decluttering a couple of years ago....then found Dawn The Minimal Mom...then you and Dana. Your clutterbug styles have really helped me understand why my husband organizes differently than me (I am a definite cricket!), and has taught me how to give him the time and space he needs to do his own thing with his stuff. Your sense of humor always makes my day! Thanks for all you do for us!....oh, and I agree, HGTV doesn't deserve you!!!

My son had executive functioning issues so I had gotten clear bins and color bins. He needed to have things broken down into the simplest direction- pick up all the red Legos- they go in the red bin; pick up the blue legos - they go in the blue bin etc. Also I had to coordinate his books/ folders for school - red for math, green for science etc.

The information about diabetes and the toilet bowl was so interesting!! Since, no one in my family has diabetes, I had no idea. I use the reminder function on my phone for everything and it can be annoying at times, but yet very satisfying when I can delete a completed task. You are a wealth of information.💕

If he can use the counter he can whipe it; but you might need to keep a rag ready in a designated spot for him, and you can’t expect him to do it perfectly, it has to be okay if it’s streaky or he misses spots.

Hi Cassandra, you are the most real and genuine Clutterbug advisor I've ever found in years. I love how you speak so naturally and honest. I think I'm a butterfly 🦋 with touches of Bee 🐝 and Cricket 🪳(sorry couldn't find a cricket emoji 🤣) and I am a border line hoarder/disorganised/hot mess lol. I think I may have ADHD but never been diagnosed and have been this messy way most of my life...my two younger sisters are nothing like me. But I get very overwhelmed with my clutter and just give up. I see it, I hate looking at it but I feel paralysed by it...I also have health probs where I can't stand for long trying to sort stuff...help!! 😕 lol I'm from UK 🇬🇧

I missed you live!! Oh no! So great to see your video! I can relate to your relationship with your mom! She also worried a lot and went crazy when her mom came over. I got to a point where I gave up. I could never get it all the way done, and there was a time where I couldn't do anything but go to work and somehow get my kids to school. Rough times. I am still trying to claw my way back out of that dark place.
    Watching videos like yours help!

NO blind people do not get a pass! I was born blind and I’ve met hundreds of blind folks and they, we, are just as responsible for our as any sighted person. Folks who’ve lost some or all of their vision may need to relearn how to do daily things through OT and other sources. I’m no r being militant at all. As a person with a disability I want to be defined for who I am not my “disability”.
