I've seen a lot of bad interviews and bad interviewees. However, I don't know if I have ever seen someone play the non-sequiter card like this congresswoman. She's jumping from open caskets, to empty barrel (show me specifically how this is a racist term), to Boko Haram (ok, at least one person remembers the tragic kidnapping). But we cannot expect Trump to have any idea of what is appropriate because he has yet to show that capacity. The fact that the negative comments here when this is about the death of an African-American Soldier shows that racism and sexism is alive and well. I've handled casualty assistance cases in my career and never once have I ever heard the words "he or she knew what he or she was getting him or herself into". Gen Kelly is a military man so what you say to him with the loss of his son is different from what you say to a civilian that doesn't understand military speak. The Gen admitted that 45 said it so it's not fake news unless 45 is fake himself. How can it be fake when Gen Kelly confirmed the words were used?

I don't like this woman, but let's not misrepresent the facts here. It's not like she was in another room and quietly picked up the receiver to eavesdrop. She was in a car and Trump was on speaker. I suppose she could've asked for the call to be taken off speaker, but the soldier's wife apparently didn't object.
I can understand why Kelly would think it was inappropriate, but under the circumstances I wouldn't be so critical. What I DO criticize is her immediate reporting to the press of what was said on the call and characterizing it in a way intended to make Trump seem unsympathetic. That was clearly out of line in my opinion.

When she says later on that she's "now a rockstar", to me that reveals her true intentions in all of this...to get media attention. Is it possible that Trump's comments "he knew what he was getting into" mean that he knew the risk in signing up for the military, but he did it anyway out of love for his country? The problem is, the words used between two friends, who are both long time military, will be taken vastly different when being spoken by a known draft dodger, to the wife of a soldier who was just killed in combat. It also depends on the inflection in the person's voice. In the context that General Kelly said it, it meant that his son was doing what he loved, in spite of the risk, and as a Marine, General Kelly understood that. But the way Trump likely said the same words, was probably similar to when he told Hurricane victims that he hopes they have a good time, so it likely came off as he was a soldier, so she should have expected him to be killed, even though it may sting when it happens. Trump is not an empathetic person, so I fully believe that the conversation went exactly how the Congresswoman says.

As someone who both served and volunteered for war, and was in a critical supporting role for several missions, I would like my family to be reminded that THAT was the case. I chose to be there doing what I was doing, and I accepted the risks that went with that. I have spoken with many vets at the Hospital in the last two days, and not one person has an issue with what the President said. It just feels like the Congresswoman is grandstanding for political points. Otherwise, this would've been a nothing about nothing.

As far as those other Veterans you have talked to, they are likely staunch Trump supporters, who explain away or ignore every single Trump screw up. After all, serving in the military doesn't make you immune to political or racial biases.
