    I've done 3 60k night time trail runs in the last 3 months. Last one is this weekend. This Petzl Iko Core has been fantastic. On medium burn, it lasts the entire night. I typically turn it on only when I really have to, so it's getting pretty dark when I turn it on, lets say around 9PM Central. The runs have been taking me about 10 hours, so about 8 hours of that time I'm running with the Iko Core on medium burn and it easily lasts the entire time, providing plenty of light for some very treacherous paths. This was a great video that helped me decide to buy this, very grateful for your review.

    Nice breakdown I've been using mine for a year now and am very pleased with it. On the occasions that I cannot fit it on my hood or hat it is useful to be able to hang it around my neck quite comfortably.

    I've seen a couple of your videos before and came across this as I'd been looking for a specific outdoor headlamp. I loved the great detail that you went into. The red LED is annoying like you said, but not a game changer for me as I'd only normally use it when I'm with other people, to stop blinding them. The longer charge time for me is a good thing, as batteries perform better when charged slower, especially Lion. And obviously being an Arsenal fan (and MTBer) I'm loving the accent and content. Keep up the good work Gijs, I've hit the bell....

    Just now learning about the petzl iko. I bought the nao last year and really like it for running. Interesting that some lamps are better for trail running vs others that may be better for camping/hiking. I like the red blinking light on the back of the nao for safety/visibility but the iko looks really awesome for how light and comfortable it can be.

    I always carry 2 headlamps with me. A small 18650 battery headlamp from Fenix and a bigger 2x 18650 with seperate battery pack for longer use. And I like to charge my lamps with seperate batterypacks.
    Taking the battery from this lamp is not my cup of tea. But great review! Groeten!

    If you want red light with this headlamp, you'll need a strip of transparent red tape, automotive tail light tape works well. Simply stick a strip over the font of the headlamp and you will get red light only. Not ideal solution, but works in a pinch.

    Great review. I've looked at a few reviews and for me this would be good for being seen on short to medium road running training sessions on familiar routes where you'd be looping back, and it would rarely get pitch black. Really don't think this would be safe enough for longer challenging trail runs in adverse conditions. No red LED, No flashing. Really basic brightness options, short battery life,. You have to turn it off to cycle through modes, and it doesn't sit with a head cap. This has great frame design and battery technology, with a basic light.

    • @OutdoorguruGearReviews
      @OutdoorguruGearReviews  2 года назад

      Hi Proxima, I agree: it's not for long runs and its is not designed for this. I use it for short trail runs and for general outdoor activities. The red light on the back... that is a petty indeed. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

    Hartelijk dank, Gijs! One thing I was hoping you would mention is whether there is any feature to prevent the headlamp from switching on accidentally while stored in your backpack. My Black Diamond with three AAA batteries supposedly locks itself “off” if you hold the button several seconds, but this feature does not really work. It occasionally switches on anyway, draining the batteries, so I have to remove the batteries every morning before I put it in my pack. If the Petzl Iko Core had a good solution to this problem, I would probably buy one.

    • @OutdoorguruGearReviews
      @OutdoorguruGearReviews  3 года назад

      Hi Benjamin, Yes it does have that feature just press the button for four seconds and pressing it again four 4 sec or 4X 1 sec unlocks it. I forget to mention it so THANKS! Cheers, Gijs

    • @philipmilsom9544
      @philipmilsom9544 Год назад

      Because of the way it folds in the pouch I think it's practically impossible for it to turn on accidentally but it's nice to know that feature is there perhaps if it is not in the pouch

      Hi Jen, Thanks for this comment. I clearly don't have a Petzl helmet and Petzl didn't read the review proper before I recorded the video. What is the best head lamp you have used

    • @OutdoorguruGearReviews
      @OutdoorguruGearReviews  3 года назад +1

      Hi Joe, That is a tricky question. If the Ika had a red light it would be that one, but in the past I reviewed a Silva Trainrunning light for the Scandinavian Outdoor Awards and it was stunning. I own a few high powered Led Lensers, Black Diamonds and a other Petzl, but if I look at my small collection.... It is the Petzl Tikka. We all have one. It performs well for what we do, - light around camp and hiking - is cheap and it has proven to be sort of bombproof (not water!). We are not talking about performance in Lumen or Lux ;-). What kind of light are you looking for? Cheers, Gijs

      Buy a cheaper Petzl or BD from around € 30. It will be sufficient and doesn't brake the bank. If you want more light in the after a while buy a more expensieve one. Nothing is lost since the Petzl will be good to keep in car/house just in case...

    Red light and white light at the same lux has no difference in night vision, contrary to common belief.

    • @OutdoorguruGearReviews
      @OutdoorguruGearReviews  2 года назад

      So this is perception?

    • @philipmilsom9544
      @philipmilsom9544 Год назад

      Do you have any logic to back up that statement? The logic to the contrary is that the rods in your eyes that are used to see in the dark can’t pick up the long wavelengths of red light. So red red light prevents your eyes from constricting preserving night vision.
