Colour footage from the 1990s showing the area of Stratford, East London and some of its amenities, including the bus station complex and the overground train station.
Been here since 1986 - I've seen the area go from a little central business district then change into a broken impoverished forgotten land and now a little city of it's own.
At what point in that evolution would you say this video captures?
@@MarcusJayMusic i feel it was just starting to come out of its impoverished state, the bus Garage was fairly new and I think the underpass had been blocked up at this point, some years later an independent Cinema would open not far from the theatre and then of course much later the Olympic stadium landed which changed everything
I wonder how many people watched this video with the thought, "Hmm I wonder if I am in it as a passing pedestrian?" I lived in Leyton 1998-2004 and often visited Stratford. It has changed so much in the past 15 years.
Thank YOU for having the gumption in the 1990s to film this! Truly so rare!
god this takes me back ! i even remember the old indoor bus station, with underpass to the shopping centre, that would be late 80s, early 90s kind of time for me
6:45 That issue of Private Eye on the shelves of Interchange News is Issue 864 and dates the video to between 27/01/95 - 09/02/95.
I know this sounds funny but I miss the old Stratford
I assure you you’re not alone.
@@LaSoglia why? I living near the station and always shopping in stradford center I feel it's pretty good.
Doesn’t sound funny at all. I loved the simple shops. Less human traffic.. more space and just peaceful.
yeah me too . miss that layer of grittiness, still there tho mind just more hidden not so blatant
I miss it badly, used to love hanging about in the old multi story car park concrete bus shelter, still remember the little tunnel that went from the mall to the station stinking of piss and always that bloke selling cassettes 😎
Old Stratford, omg I remember that corner shop
the days when stratford made sense, when people were more open, sociable & more confident. All before the internet trendy i phone days right there ahhh man classic throwbacks.
I have lived in stratford since 1990. I was 5 years old. Its nostalgic to say the least. Theres no white earphones in peoples ears. Lol
Ace11 Sarcens how old are you now
@WelshWoody there are white people. More in this video than there are now.
WelshWoody before you make a point can you actually give the point cause it shows you have nothing to say
@WelshWoody Ur some dumb guy 🤣
Omg, can’t believe how calm and sleepy it looks back then. The station is so different now - actually Britain’s 8th busiest, ahead of Kings Cross and St Pancras.
At 1:22 that’s where we used to get the National Express Coach to get to St Osyth to go my Mum and Dads Caravan.
As others I also miss the old Stratford, I still use the old Stratford Market rather than Westfield.
Thank You so much for this video. I have lived in Stratford since 1984 and watching your video was a trip down memory lane.
HOLY SHIT! Amazing. I live round the corner and things have changed, a lot!
lived here my whole life wow it's changed so much lol I remember Stratford station as being a little tunnel entrance used to play down there was very rough in the 90s 😂 but wow it looks so new here now :-D
@mr mike I think in about 2000 they knocked it down and built that but not 100% sure but was round about that time
@Luke Davis I remember that.
Yeah i remember it used to be just dark hole as bus garage
Stratford has changed a lot and I remember when it was like this.
I can still remember the old concrete bus garage, walking through the Mall to get to the station, I prefer the old Stratford, some great memories.
AGREE WITH YOU
How? Yes I know we all miss the old old days but let’s be honest it was the fuckin pits back then. So much nicer now in every way thinkable.
This is precious.
I saw the bus station build whole of new stuff , living in carpenters, fairland, and Atherton Rd, boy this video brings back so many memories, thank you so much.
I saw it build too. I lived not far away in Disraeli Rd.
I remember I used to buy cigarette singles in the shop inside the bus station.
I remember the cafe that was opposite that shop.
Trying to remember a Sunday market around stratford and hackney. It was huge. They use to sell bootleg DVDs music and games. Tryinbto remember the name of that market. We just called it sunday market. I know they moved to wembley after it closed down. What was the name, looking for vids on it
That was generally known as "Hackney Market" and was round the back of Waterden Road, where Copperbox Arena now is. The KICC megachurch occupied the site for a while in the 00's before the bid for the London 2012 Olympics was won. I'd love to see videos too but I do have a couple of still photos from about 2001 of a pre-Olympic Village Carpenters Road, taken from my 14th floor tower block and looking out onto Hackney Wick
Wow Stratford was actually quite well connected from way back.
I used to go shopping load's of time's to Stratford when I used to live in canning town. I used to get the 69 bus from hermit road canning town to Stratford bus station
1996-2006 Stratford was my residential living at that time.
I remember Stratford like this very well, I lived in Mile End at the time and often would go to Stratford to use the shopping centre, I remember how run down the tube station was at the time, and a tunnel linking the station to the shopping centre was a nasty place to be in at night. Today where subway was located was a smelly old toilets where piss heads and druggies used to hang around, Very different place today.
@mr mike Well the first thing to be built, was the bus station around 1994 and then the shopping centre was refurbished around 1998 and the tube station itself was refurbished and was completed by 1999 for the Jubliee line extension
@mr mike Well, to build the Olympic park, a lot of areas were demolished, large industrial estate was demolished. Stratford bus garage was demolished and the bus garage relocated to the new west ham garage near star lane.
The biggest area was Clays Lane Estate to demolish to make way for the athletes' village in the 2012 London Olympics site
I miss stratty before the olympics
Most locals have gone disappeared to Essex or Kent most lived in London east end and gone ,some oldies left in Stratford everyone else gone .

If you really know Stratford mate - you would know West Indians/Caribbean people have lived in Stratford for ages . Your writing shit - now Pi$$Off .
No , alot stayed but the old die . Some of the young moved away when they cleared Carpenters but alot moved to Maryland and West Ham - still Stratford though and some to Plaistow . Things change , it's life .
@@JW20236
Your or you're , who cares it's the RUclips comment section - where people like you exist so if someone notices my wrong use of grammar as I wrote above - who cares and as for your comment about the country being 98% white , Sub-Saharan Africa was once 100% black so now it's your turn - boo hoo .
@@JW20236
Now it's my time to correct you , you wrote "not even the majority British..." Most Caribbean people , black or Asian are British due to Britains colonies and their grandparents where invited here or are so ignorant not know about
Windrush Generation ?
Stop watching my grammer and go read a history book .
And the capital is still white , just not all white English but add the white Eastern European population to the white English population then look at your numbers again .
@@JW20236
Weather you believe I'm the "offspring" of the Windrush Generation or I have mixed race children , who cares - I could blacker than a chalk board or whiter than a polar bears fur I'm not one-sided but factual and if you believe that Europe is still not overwhelming white , you ain't writing facts but racist propaganda .
This is brilliant. I was hoping the footage would have included the old bus station.
Even a single deck 241 back then
Old is gold
I remember Stratford looking like that
wow the 241 still has The same route
Brilliant! But oh if only you had walked down those steps into the station ticket office area with that camera. If anyone out there has footage or pictures of the old subway entrance to the station I'd love to see them. This film was taken just after they closed the subway between the shopping centre and the station but there would still have been the old ticket office down there which no one seems to have pictures of.
My Mother took a tumble down those steps, as kids we found it hilarious even though she was fuming lol
This is a jewel, I use to love going Stratford centre as a kid while living in tower hamlets
Ah the good old days of Stratford in East London.
I used to work in Bejam in the Stratford Centre in 1979 after school and my main problem was to get past the local skineads that frequented the centre at 8pm .cos I had to get to the central line.
Place has changed beyond recognition .As said it certainly has become very multicultural now although not a bad thing.
Before stratford was famous
Good times
I first went to west ham in 1989 i think, with Norwich in the fa cup quarter finals. My ticket was £6,i was on a yts £26 a week and got offered a tenner for it.plus my old school mate Giovanni Pizzoli came,he wasn't really into football but was a big ,tidy lad.we stopped somewhere between the ground and upton park tube station,or right outside the Boleyn tavern, and he drunk in there .
i lived there 1978 when i was 18 drank in the king edward the 7th and worked in silvertown i now live in ellesmere port i loved the east end then but sadly not what it has become now sooo sad but iv got gt memories
It feels like, it's the late 90s. I can see a car, it's a ford escort.
Does pictures house(cinema ) still there saw my 1st movie there. Had a Nokia 3310 snakes was the best game ever .
Still there now
8:25 Maud, Dorothy, Mavis and Albert
they are probably gone by now.
Hasn't changed a bit!
Was this filmed before the JLE construction started?
Holy crap, , looks quite shabby.
This looks like more recently video definitely not 1990
I’ve used all the words in the title of this vid at some stage or another but this 9 year old never came up before, until today randomly.
Like watching a bunch of ghosts
I used to go to carpenters primary school. I used feel sick sometimes. It was cold, and boring tbh lol.
I went to that school and it was horrible their lol
Ooh cool I went to that school too
I say this is 1995, I was born then thats why. 😂👍🏼
Wowwwwwww! Looks so weird without Westfield and tall flats I was like where is this haaaaahaaaa so much lighter and not so dark without the blocks but change does come for the better😊
I date this at 1995
And what days they were! 🙂
Justin Griffiths this was 3 years ago
Wat year was this filmed please 😄😃😀
How depressing.
My home
When there were still English people in Stratford
before the replacement project realised its goal
Now all you see is Chinese man
John Wayne now all you ever see is mostly bengalis
@@Missyprincess719 I bet ur some next posh racist upper class conservative don
I know it’s absolutely saddening! Take us back to the good old days of Jimmy Savile and Myra Hindley! 😢😢
I remember when Stratford looked like this, it’s now completely transformed in terms of development and is now a national and international transport hub.
looks normal back then
What if you saw baby you lol
My god it was grim!
Go there now you wouldn’t know you are in England
It was dirty compared to now.
