Because he’s a bit disingenuous and likes to try and hype things up. For example the games where Japan got close to winning vs Ireland etc were friendlies against their 2nd string squad etc
I'm losing track of the amount of times I've seen the RWC trophy reveal, I'm starting to see it in my sleep after watching all of these videos over the last several months
Although they might suprise us yet (they didn't look that spectacular before the last world cup either), the most encouraging news out if Japanese rugby is that they've said they want to organise the 2035 RWC, and they want to go into that world cup as the #1 team in the world. Now everybody has a plan until it's scrum down against a Springbok forward pack, so there's no guarantee their plan will succeed, but it's a level of ambition that shows Japan are in this for the long run.
Japan and ireland probably have the chance to develop a good underage development aswell. I know some school rugby was big when I was over there and there was rugby pitch where we stayed so possibly, England on the other hand will be lucky to have a national league by then, with no funding toward underage games
If there's any nation in the world that can do something like that through sheer determination, I'd say it was the Japanese. They're smart, they love sport, they love to support their national side. It's a heady mixture.
@@timmurphy4844 Ireland already have one of, if not THE best Academy / age grade system in place. England have almost endless funds and resources. With one of the largest registered player pools. True. There needs to be success stories. There have to be examples of countries being relatively new to the sport succeeding at getting to that next level.
the thing with japan is that almost the 59 percent of their players didnt born in japan, only 10 of their 24 player of the national team are truly from japan, i dont know if that could be call as a national team, but i hope that they have succes of this worlds cup
There are two things I love about a world cup, the drama that always comes with one. And the squidgy videos which help me understand exactly how it all happened
Was at that Scotland game in Yokohama, one of the most amazing scenes Ive ever witnessed. Amazing tournament, amazing country, if Japan ever gets into TRC, they should just host all the games there, or at least half the games and maybe the other in Argentina.
This is why i love this sport and your channel. The CONTEXT of every game and how they win/lose is EVERYTHING! I think world rugby is so much better off because of amazing teams like Japan and the way you frame their journey only makes me more excited to see how they perform and grow. Also, this was my first year watching the Japan pro league, and boy was there some fun rugby there.
Japan have shown some promising signs, but as I said in previous videos they need to get into a major tournament like the championship to get to that next level.
Don’t get me wrong they’ll forever be in the annals of history for that Brighton Miracle, but this Japan team is so undercooked they gotten bear well by Italy in the warm ups. If they come 3rd, they’ll be doing well
There is truth to this . They could be playing off against Samoa for third place otherwise it's back to qualifying that's some fall in a space of four years from quarter finals to qualifying for the next RWC. I hopw there is some truth to their RWC35 bid.
they need to up their southern hemisphere recruitment, scope out any good players from South Africa, New Zealand, Fiji, Australia, Samoa and Tonga and lure them over, heck even Argentina a place that I am not aware of them recruiting from yet. They have the $ or should I say the yen to do it.
Squidge, can you please let me help you with French subtitles for your next video on France? I’m a huge fan and your analysis videos need to be watched by French people who cannot keep up with your speaking pace (I.e a lot) 😅

This could be the most exciting and messy pool in the whole tournament. Argentina could "upset" England, Japan could "upset" either, even Samoa could upset Japan or Argentina if stars align. We could end up with very very close points.
As a Frenchman, I feel the obligated need to correct you at 13:24 : Japan actually never beat France, only drawn the poor squad mentioned at 2:30 So see you in the semis hehe
First again! Japan won’t be first though but with England in the state they’re in could those Brave Blossoms sneak 2nd behind Argentina in Pool D? Well there’s Samoa too. I hope World Rugby have a plan for what to do about England if they finish 4th in Pool D!
The best thing that could happen this World Cup is that one of the Six Nations teams finishes 4th or 5th in their group. It would force the tier one cabal to open up the international game

Not a word on the test vs Italy that I was ar the stadium to watch...I think that match gave an idea about the values of both teams at the moment. It was also an important win for Italy, even if it was a warm up match. Anyway, I've always liked Japan, they have just a little too many players coming from the outside but they're not really different from other teams by this perspective. They play a very fast rugby, maybe they are not dominant physically, struggling against some particularly strong and powerful teams, though having good skills and set pieces. I'd love to see them in the quarter finals and England kicked out of the pool stage...but keep an eye on Samoa too! ;-)
Because, in order to get all 20 done, I had to lock the script for this & Italy and just start editing the videos before that final weekend of warm-ups, otherwise there was literally no chance we’d have got this or Australia done before the World Cup with how much else was on. Wasn’t an ideal decision, but it had to be the case for practical reasons.
As a Scot, that loss against Japan four years ago was depressing. Probably have a better chance than we do- even though I think this Scotland team rn is as good as I’ve ever seen it.
Japanese rugby has sadly been very disappointing post 2019 WC. They really have won very few games. Obviously the pandemic disrupted their momentum and they didnt play any games for almost two years. But something else just seems off about the Japanese team these last few years. I just cant quite put my finger on it...
I live in southern japan and my son playes union in junior high and i can tell you Japans rugby is on the decline fast due to numbers of junior players leaving, i watch a lot of high school rugby and university rugby and the standards are very low in my opinion, i think the mixture between bad coaching standards and japan rugby not putting money back into grass roots rugby will be the end of japan being competetive in the future. I cant see Japan going to far in the world cup which is sad for the Japanese rugby supporters.

Pumas beating England is no Upset, and Samoa has already beaten Japan this year so a repeat would not be an upset either.
