Love Izotope Ozone. User for years. Matching eq was a great tool. But I have to choose another reference track instead of that one song of Rammstein which is running on this track since years... Thanks alot Glenn
I been using this plugin since their 8 version. love it. also play with vintage limiter and 4 band stereo width. The dynamic eq for individual channels to do sidechain for kick bass relationship is second to non. and total balance control will help you get your mix in ballpark before you even put on ozone.

Thank you, Glenn!! // EDIT update: I bought it (Ozone 9 advanced) in the production bundle - this is AMAZING!! I was able to score a loyalty discount and saved a ton of money. This was a huge step forward for my production workflow. Your timing on this video couldn't have been better, Glenn. Thank you Thank you!!
Best $300 ever spent was on Ozone Elements. Also, Hey brother on your note about the car might I recommend sonarworks it's expensive but it's a lifesaver. It creates a flat rate for, brands of headphones, specific instances, and even different ouputs including the car, laptop, earbuds. Love the channel.
Ozone 9 is the best mastering suite ever! You can also open up elements of it to work on your mix. That is an insanely good deal for plugins!! This is a must have if you have a recording studio.
Right on Glenn! Was hoping you would do an iZotope Ozone demo. Great stuff I learned a few new tricks from your video. Thank you brother and keep that great content flowing!
I have Ozone 9 and Neutron 3. Neutron 3 is a little iffie with me and Ozone 9 I would normally use for overall Mastering. The Master Assistant is a really good tool to use. And Glenn, you using it gave me a bit more confidence to work with it more. This video even inspired me to work with Neutron more.
Neutron became a game changer for me with its transient shaper module. I put it at the beginning of the signal chain. Use all 3 bands and you can breathe life into dull stale recorded sounds. It's been a lifesaver for me!!
When I first played a gig with Alestorm, after the show the singer stood on my foot for five minutes as he told me about drinking four loko all day on the bus! Lovely guy!
I've been using Ozone 9 ever since it came out and I absolutely love it! I make masters for pros around the globe and they are impressed with the sound I can get. Worth every penny!
This plugin blew my mind. I'm aware of Izotope but have always been a Waves man. Is this plugin a standalone or part of bigger system/bundle? Thanks in advance Glenn, you rock!
I used izotopes products to help me get a vocal in a mix or at least the reference for it and it was amazing and taught me way more than I expected it to
As an old guy who spent 3 decades doing this, if your a indi musician who records their own stuff = Do not get involved with mastering, stick to recording and learning how to mix its way more important, mastering takes years, and the hardest part is learning how to listen to the mix, your time is better spend improving your song writing skills. Bandlab has free mastering, there are 4 options - Dynamic mix, Fire, Tape and i forget the other one, the default = Dynamic is pretty good, if your master is lacking bass or something, mix it again and run it through Bandlab mastering again.
This is good advice. You can do the same thing with Ozone. I picked up Ozone Elements for free when they had a sale or something. I use it as a reference to see where my mixes lack etc. and my mixes have gotten so much better. Lots of times now, the corrective EQ in Ozone is just flat. But if the AI boosts the highs, for example, I know I'll have to go back and boost the highs in the cymbals or vocals or whatever else.
Someone should make a Ozone 9 master assistant vs Bandlab mastering video, would be interesting to see how they compare mastering the same songs/mixes.
I just recently purchased neutron 3 and ozone 9 advanded a month ago and been super happy with these plugins.. not only the AI attribute but it's total streamline and workflow has help alot.. it's made mixing and mastering so much easier.. i AI the initial mix/master then add or subtract modules to cater to what is needed at that present time.. izotope are close to my favorite plugin designers and looking forward to what they brew up next.
I recently purchased this and submitted one of my mixes to you when you were live…you really liked the mix and nothing bad to say…I just had to figure out how to send you the mix link…You might remember haha
Been using Ozone since version 4 or 5, and it's definitely better than ever now. Excellent choices for the mastering assistant too. Heartwork is god-tier.
Tonal Balance Control is nice feature as well. If you don't have good monitoring system, you can at least control balance of your track so you don't put a lot of bass / treble / etc. It also comes with learning algorithm where you can throw bunch of songs and it will draw a eq curve that you should match on your master. Helps a lot to tweak your mix on final stages so it gets right on the point.
Agreed. I just need to find good reference tracks. There are default curves in Tonal Balance Control but my results were kinda flat. Still Better than what I had before.
Would definitely be interested in a video over Nectar. I've used it in the past but I never feel like I get what I'm looking for with it. But ozone is great
use a very crisp and clear take and check out all the presets, it is very powerful, I produce pop and hip hop and my clients love it, it has a very distinct sound
Honestly I have been using Ozone for years now and for a quick master for a demo it works alright but it is miles behind anything done by an engineer who knows what he’s doing. As soon as you raised the lufs target, it totally crushed your mix and started distorting horribly. There’s no instant way to get a clean, dynamic and LOUD master. (Not yet at least 😅) Only patience, experience, creativity and time… The mix was very good, that’s what allowed Ozone to get a good result here. Don’t overestimate AI in audio. We’re not there yet 😌 (please prove me wrong)
It indeed saves tons of time. At least it can allow for a starting reference point, from where one can tweak the sound in better detail. The next step is to use A.I to replace the bass player in the band.
I use ozone all day and night I absolutely love it! If you have RX 8 you can separate a full song, grab the guitar track, then use match eq to fine tune the guitars you're mastering.
I got ozone 8 elements free from a sweetwater give away a while ago. It's helped me get what I concisder the best masters of I've ever gotten so far. I'm a mix/ master noob but have been getting compliments on how far my mixes have come. I use jst joel wanasek bus glues on the instrument tracks when needed then use the Joel wanasek bus glue mix and ozone on the master track. Those along side my line 6 helix has really catapulted my tones and mixes to a whole other level.
I just started using this for an album I entirely wrote on GarageBand on my phone. I exported the wav, put it into reaper and used it on a master bus, and it’s working really well for me.

@@mrcoatsworth429 from my understanding flatline is marketed as a $10,000 of mastering into $100 (in my case £). true that the ozone plug in has alot of features including the A.I. the one i"m going for is more affordable
Automating the mastering process sounds like a no brainer to me. Specific to my situation where hearing loss has compromised my ability to actually assess a mix any tool such as this would be so helpful.. just have to wait for the price point to drop a little!
I get paid to master on occasion, and Ozone is at the center of my workflow. I have a few more specialized tools, but Ozone is definitely good enough to do most things I need to do. It should be noted that the main determinant of the success of the Ozone Pro Plugin is the requirement of a solidly handled mix. If you haven't EQ'd your mix elements correctly, this plugin will highlight those resonances (it doesn't do notch EQing) and it'll probanly sound like shit. It ain't a magic marker. But it's kinda cool. Edit: it did some notch EQing later on - but with the Ozone 9 Match EQing plugin, not the Ozone Pro plugin itself.
Hey Glenn, is that a smashed line 6 on the wall, awesome...when is the mesa POS going up...All BS equipment should go on the wall of shame, SMASHED!... You're the man!!! Btw I changed the speakers in my Marshall 2x12 cab from 70/80's to 90watt alnico cream backs, Man what a difference in holding the low end, no flub...Keep up the great work.
Hi Glenn, I'm a long time viewer and there have been a couple questions I've been meaning to ask: 1) Do you have any tips on how to get the cleanest sounding guitar DIs while simultaneously recording an amp? The best I've been able to do is running the output of a buffered splitter into an isolation transformer (to solve a ground loop issue) before the interface. Using an actual DI box ended up having a higher noise floor. A guide about how to record a noise-free DI could make a wonderful video. 2) I know that many times you have mentioned the importance of summing the mix to mono to check it for problems. What I'm wondering is how do you get rid of the "phase-y" sound coming from double tracked guitars summed to mono? Nobody else that I know of on RUclips talks about how to deal with this. Thank you And fuck you kindly.
GLEN!!! I'm getting some Nevermore vibes from that song and I fucking love it. Your friend had Jeff Loomis sig so makes sense but dude love it sounds amazing props bro.
Video idea: Try mixing by eye. "hmm.. this eq curve looks fine for a guitar. The meter says my kick is a bit loud." End it with a big reveal of how it sounds.
Ozone is pretty good, but it *really* does benefit from getting in there and tweaking it after, particularly if your doing something with a lot of dynamics.
you got to do a video now with how to integrate the Ozone software and the kool hardware you have in the background. so can see the best of both worlds being used together in harmony. debunk that hardware is better argument. Using both properly is best IMHO 💪🍻
Lol. Yes, Ozone rocks. The entire Izotope suite is useful. Next you’re going to be saying how actually SD3 with a V Drum set actually can sound amazing. Which most of us, like with Ozone, already know. Welcome to this century Glen!!
Gleeeennnn! Are there any combo amps that you would suggest for recording and live purposes? It seems like a lot of the stuff that you’ve recommended since I’ve been a subscriber are the separate head and cab combinations, but I wanted to know if you can recommend anything that is both combined into one
A bit in dangerous territory here. One day this will analyse every single track and copy the mixing secrets/styles of big rock bands. Than you just have to click "Korn" and your mix will sound like Korn! I totally mean that! Let's say all guitars and bass are DI. An AI could tweak it into every direction. It's scary. It's a bit like AutoTune, but for mixing.
@@stringwhore Yeah, a bit we are already in that dimension, because some mixes really just sound generic already compared to each other. But this AI would do it in lightning speed.
I lost my shit when you used the Heartwork album as a reference. This, in my opinion, is easily top 3 of all time productions. It was really troubling not hearing enough about this area because it seemed obvious but never heard much about it. Doesn't matter if you play it on a decent system or an old boom box from back in the day, it always had that 3D sound to it. Ozone is easily #1 most used plugin I use. So friggin friendly to use across everything. I'm only a hobby type user who is still compressor-dumb, but Ozone was easily the best addition to my basic Reaper skills and home recording.
When I first heard and saw the Video for Heartwork, I was watching HBB with my drummer. That opening riff started and qe went silent til the end and I was like, Did you just see that!? Then you hear the opening riff to Burried Dreams when I got the tape and shot myself!
@@KelticKabukiGirl The snarl quality of buried dreams is nothing shy of a felony. Totally effing epic. It sounds metal as f&^%, but damn...it makes every hair stand up. Haven't heard anything since that matches. Testament Low album (Wish it was volume maximized more) is the closest.
Hey Glenn, couple questions/comments: 1st: Wouldn't that cheap cab actually be the best shape for a cab? You mentioned that the front of the cab only looks like it has an angle in it but it's actually a single slab of wood at an angle. To me, that seems better than having the angle in the middel, as that removes a major contributor to standing waves occuring which is two "walls" being parallel to each other. 2nd: We all know you love the SM57 (although it does get overdone now) and especially in the Fredman configuration. But what do you think about a SM58 without grille? It's very similar to a SM57 that way, but not exactly the same. I once did a mic shootout comparing 12+ mics to each other on a guitar cab and I actually preffered the MacGyvered SM57 to the real deal. It was, however, at a venue which saw some heavy use of it's microphones and the amp was not suited as a main tone for the type of metal we were playing (Fender Bluesbreaker). So the testing was less than ideal. Cheers from Holland, And f*** you!
I’m 90% shure (i’ll see myself out) they’re the same microphone just with a different grille. I think maybe the 57 has a shorter distance from diaphragm to grille
@@slayabouts they are very similar, but not quite the same. The Beta SM57 and Beta SM58 are the same microphone with a different grille though! That's also a cool follow up question: What do you think of the Shure Beta line of microphones?
I’ve been using ozone advanced for quite a while, I also use neutron and RX. If I’m going to use a reference track I try to make sure it’s also in the same key as the song I’m working on. As an example if I was mixing and mastering heavy metal. The reference track I would use would many times be drop D tuning of an African rhinos farts. Thank you Glenn for this video
13:00 The mix with the Carcass reference sounded better in my opinion. Which crazy considering how old that album is. Glenn, I think you may be right about that album mix being unbeaten or unrivaled. You definitely turned me on ozone and all its capabilities. I’m eager to see how close I got my guitar tones to the reference tracks I used. Ozone will tell me how close (or far) I am.
As time passes, plug-ins will be more and more based on AI algorhythms, kind of how it's happening in the world of photography with Photoshop's neural filters and several denoisers, supersamplers and sharpeners. BTW how do you think the Ozone 9 performs compared to the Brainworx Masterdesk?
Heads up when you switched your reference track to only for the weak you didnt remove the previous reference inserts. For some reason it always does something weird when I accidentally do that.
also I just post a video with CD volume audio (not thinking about it) and this video answered my question. Haven't post on youtube in a while, now I'll remember to lower the master to -12 luffs for web.
If there was an AI option for mixing live shows, it would have to include a feature to make the opening band sound worse.
They already made that! It's called the master fader and sub aux hahahaha
😂😂😂

Isn't that just what a sound guy does normally.?
Glenn, there is a match gain feature on this thing to avoid volume jumps. Everything sounds better when its turned to 11...

It ain't a magic marker. But it's kinda cool.
Edit: it did some notch EQing later on - but with the Ozone 9 Match EQing plugin, not the Ozone Pro plugin itself.
A metal mixing A.I. becoming self aware and destroying humanity sounds pretty metal.
I’ve been using ozone since around 2013 or so. It was a game changer for me
Hi Glenn,
I'm a long time viewer and there have been a couple questions I've been meaning to ask:
1) Do you have any tips on how to get the cleanest sounding guitar DIs while simultaneously recording an amp? The best I've been able to do is running the output of a buffered splitter into an isolation transformer (to solve a ground loop issue) before the interface. Using an actual DI box ended up having a higher noise floor. A guide about how to record a noise-free DI could make a wonderful video.
2) I know that many times you have mentioned the importance of summing the mix to mono to check it for problems. What I'm wondering is how do you get rid of the "phase-y" sound coming from double tracked guitars summed to mono? Nobody else that I know of on RUclips talks about how to deal with this.
Thank you
And fuck you kindly.
Dude always hate your mixes, but this sounds so good, love izotope :D
gotta get this
GLEN!!! I'm getting some Nevermore vibes from that song and I fucking love it. Your friend had Jeff Loomis sig so makes sense but dude love it sounds amazing props bro.
i am using one of the older versions for my band's demos and works great
This is fucking amazing man.
Leaving much headroom is key for ozone, and on a weaker system put it on a mixdown, not in the session.
Love this plugin. The Gain Match does work well too. I use it on 9 out of 10 songs I master. Brilliant.
Video idea: Try mixing by eye.
"hmm.. this eq curve looks fine for a guitar. The meter says my kick is a bit loud."
End it with a big reveal of how it sounds.
Glenn 3:30 you used Mp3 Format, Use Exact same track but Flac it will blow your mind even more.it will work more accurate
Holy shit, Glenn. You weren't exaggerating. That was super clear, heavy and HYPER real sounding. Congrats!
I'd pay for a walkthrough and complete session files of this mix. I want to learn what you did on that kick and snare!

I’ve been mastering with AI for years. Works great for me!
Been there, done that with Mastering CD's!
Ozone is pretty good, but it *really* does benefit from getting in there and tweaking it after, particularly if your doing something with a lot of dynamics.
I have been mastering with Waves and T Racks for years, but need to take a look at this, for sure. Thanks!
Sounds amazing... please compare ozone to sonible smart eq & smart limit.
you got to do a video now with how to integrate the Ozone software and the kool hardware you have in the background. so can see the best of both worlds being used together in harmony. debunk that hardware is better argument. Using both properly is best IMHO 💪🍻
I was using both. Tube vari-mu on the mix bus, plenty of analog comps on the drums
I love Ozone, but I use it in another way for video audio. Does the trick on dialogue too for recorded seminars and similar stuff.
Ozone is pretty amazing, but there is definitely a learning curve. Not QUITE so simple as it looks in the demos.
I really love izotope's products, that's really cool you landed a sponsored video with them
I did one for RX a few years ago
Holy shit! A person happy to see Glenn getting paid!
That tone is so fucking gritty, it’s like a truck engine. Good shit Glennigan! ❤️
I say we kill it with fire
@@stringwhore Yeah, a bit we are already in that dimension, because some mixes really just sound generic already compared to each other. But this AI would do it in lightning speed.
@@InTheSh8 Good for people who want to do their own stuff because the difference would be that much more obvious.
All im saiyan is this prolly how skynet started in the first place
I am also a Fan of the Production on Vol 4, Piece of Mind, Death-Human, Brave New World, and the first few Monolord albums!
Hey Glenn, couple questions/comments:
1st:
Wouldn't that cheap cab actually be the best shape for a cab?
You mentioned that the front of the cab only looks like it has an angle in it but it's actually a single slab of wood at an angle.
To me, that seems better than having the angle in the middel, as that removes a major contributor to standing waves occuring which is two "walls" being parallel to each other.
2nd:
We all know you love the SM57 (although it does get overdone now) and especially in the Fredman configuration.
Cheers from Holland,
And f*** you!
Jesus that initial Carcass mix sounded good. The mastered version is great as well.
It’s one of the best! Colin Richardson was way ahead of his time!
Used to use Ozone for quick demos to show the band and some friends that sounded decent to get my point across.
As time passes, plug-ins will be more and more based on AI algorhythms, kind of how it's happening in the world of photography with Photoshop's neural filters and several denoisers, supersamplers and sharpeners.
BTW how do you think the Ozone 9 performs compared to the Brainworx Masterdesk?
the maximizer is THE go to plug-in on my mastering chain no doubt
Heads up when you switched your reference track to only for the weak you didnt remove the previous reference inserts. For some reason it always does something weird when I accidentally do that.
Finally, Glenn reviews something I already own.. Thanks Glenn \m/
also I just post a video with CD volume audio (not thinking about it) and this video answered my question. Haven't post on youtube in a while, now I'll remember to lower the master to -12 luffs for web.
