I've been in Nazare Portugal the surfer town since early July and the locals have been very nice. I haven't experienced any negative attitudes towards me here. However, I was based in Tenerife as a native English teacher during the time when masks stopped being mandatory on public transport.
There's a big contrast between here and there and this was during a time when the Canarians on Tenerife were crying out for more tourists because their businesses were suffering post lockdown. I imagine it's much worse now. Some of them are very rude and they'll rip you off blind if they have the chance. And they make no distinction between foreign workers and tourists which was the most annoying thing. I also didn't feel safe there at times and was mugged after a Real Madrid match I'll never go back, not even for a holiday!

I recently switched from a dumb phone (Nokia 3310) to a smart phone. I have made it so that I have a subscription with 5 GB of data per month, which means that I have to prioritize my data usage. Therefore, I don't feel like I'm wasting my time, but have the advantage of being able to be online if needed. It can therefore be recommended if you are considering switching back to a dumb phone.

Interesting conversation and reporting. Very few places are like Venice - unique in the world and overwhelmed by 'day trippers'.... In most popular tourist places like Athens and Barcelona: ship footfall is really small compared with total visitors, so charging a day ticket for cruise liner passengers is just window dressing and soundbites with no substance. Remember ships already charge a landing fee of $60 or more those opting to disembark for a around 6 hours or so. One often has a choice of staying onboard and sipping more Piña Colada perhaps at no extra charge as drinks already included
It should be pointed out that although mass tourism generally causes price hikes in a location, typically not all locals work in tourism (directly and indirectly) and benefit from it, again Venice is an exception. Authorities should really do more to encourage a particular tourist and a particular behaviour of typical tourist. Denmark as usual gets it right 👍

He needs to decide, does tourism bring lots of low pay temporary jobs or does tourism provide employed students with more money than if they studied? Cant be both..

I like simple phones when traveling. Only apps I need: Google maps and taxi ride apps. 😂
