My dad played drums in New Orleans for over 60 years. Al Hirt was my cousin ( his middle name is Maxwell). Dad played with him many times, but when he started getting famous and traveling the world , Dad gave up his spot so he could be home with the family. For the first Super Bowl in New Orleans at Tulane stadium, my dad played on the sideline with Al and Doc Sevrenson ( Tonight Show bandleader). At halftime, Dad called up and said he had a ticket for me if I could get to the stadium. I sure got there! Dad dropped the ticket down to me from about the second ramp level and it just kept floating! Finally caught it. Got to sit on sidelines. That night, Dad had a small jazz group to play at a private party of them Saints owner John Mecom, on Lee Circle. As we caught the elevator to the third floor party room , Len Dawson, winning QB for the Chiefs hopped on the elevator too. For the first time in my 12 years of life I was speechless! Pee Wee loved to fish and went on plenty trips with us. Growing up , Dad ran the top Society band in the city , where they played every a-list society and debutant party as well as all of the old line carnival balls like Rex and Comus. I would come home from school and there would be a 14 piece orchestra rehearsing in our living room, then all the guys would go into our yard for a big crawfish boil. New Orleans was an almost magical place to grow up in. Thanks for all the great memories Dad. I miss you.
Al Hirt the great one could make any trumpet sound good those were the days of great jazz and inventiveness back in the 70's Al Hirt the dancer? Love it
I cant believe I have lived across the street from Pee Wee Spitilara's family for 30 years without ever listening to his work before! Just amazing low register stuff !
I was a senior in high school in 1971 and saw Al Hirt with the same band. At that time my friends were listening to 'Creedence Clearwater', 'The Doors', 'The Who', etc. as I was but I couldn't explain in words the talent of what I saw on stage with Hirt and his band. His 'South Rampart Street' is amazing and beautiful. Peace amigos.........JO
Juan Oskar my mom is right now on here last few hours and I am sitting here playing this for her because she wants to die listening to her favorite music
There IS no explaining! All you have to do is let it go in your ears and the rest just comes automatically in your brain, soul and body! Al Hirt has been a favorite of mine almost as long as I can remember!
I joined Al Hirts band right before turning 21 years old and was with him until 1962. Did my own thing with my own band for 5 yrs, went back with him in 1970 until I 983 for à total of about 19 yrs. He çould do anything with horn, his jazz was different than any other player, it was his own style of jazz. Ronnie DuPont, piano player also was with Pete Fountain 12 yrs
R I P Ronnie Dupont. Remember first hearing Ronnie at a piano bar on Tulane Ave. in the mid 1960s. A singer named Betty Farmer in the trio? Ronnie was the best!
Hey, I need your help. I found a 50s trumpet, king brand, and it has a note in its case that says "Al Hirts First Trumpet". all of my researching points to it being a his. But my main issue is that it has a dent on the tubbing leaving the mouthpiece, was that from something Hirt did, or was it just from someone else?
Al Hirt was the complete trumpeter but Harry James was in a class all his own.The bass player was Jim Black my ex son in law.My daughter Debbie Fagnano played piano with the band for a while. She now plays the caliope on river boat Natchez.Jim is retired.I was a fan of Hirt from the first time I saw him on the Dinah Shore show, never dreamed I would ever meet him. What an honor!
I have always liked Al Hirt. But before I ever knew who he was, Harry James came to our school to play a short number or two at a program and I was asked to accompany him. I didn't even realize who he was, until afterwards, but I certainly recognized a great trumpet and sound from one of the best trumpet players ever! Both Hirt and James are STILL favorites! Both are gone now, but it's their recordings that I enjoy. Two very different styles of playing, but oh, such impressive talents they were!
I can't stop loving you Mr. Hirt! What a treasure this concert is. Thank you for posting it. I had to watch Al play Poor Butterfly twice as this is my favorite. I wish this concert was on a CD. Thank you again for posting it. ❤
This is an awesome and unexpected treat. I grew up listening to the great man and trying to educate my less educated fellow students how great a trumpet player he was. Unfortunately, that was around the time this video was made but I had no access to it and my band director was always pushing Maynard Ferguson and Chuck Mangione on us. Now, make no mistake, Maynard and Chuck are also near and dear to my heart but I have a special regard for Al and his tone and his devastating flexibility and speed on the trumpet. I missed my one chance to see him at Wolf Trap nearly a decade and a half after this and thought that I had totally missed out. Now thanks to you I have seen him in concert and it was brilliant. Thank you so much for posting this!
Wow! Ok lemme gather my thoughts......A Freaking hour long video of Al Hirt.....wooowww....this uploader is deserving of the Al Hirt youtube video Award! Never have I been so grateful to finally see the entire video of the masters performance. I felt as though I had travel back through time and was seated in the best seat of the house. this was Amazing. I'm very appreciative of the time it would have taken to preserve this clip, digitize it then upload it. wow thank God for RUclips and the uploader of course. You have certainly ,single handedly increase the value of RUclips and made it a better place thank you thank you thank you. Tell me where else in the world could I have been able to take in a concert with the undisputed KING of the trumpet, peewee and mr perjean as well as the bass man, drummer and pianist. These guys are remarkable entertainers the likes this world will never see again, well not like this anyway....this made my Christmas...thanks again for the upload this was immensely enjoyed ...HOOYAH ...long live the king of the trumpet .."Mr. Al Hirt"
Al Hirt one of the best trumpeters in the world, Every trumpeter has his own style but Mr. Hirt is among the chosen for glory. Louis Amstrong Harry James Roy Etzel Ray Anthony etc etc Very good trumpeters
Hi Jim, Yes those were the days. That's when we had 'ball busting jazz bands' and fantastic players. Hope you are doing fine. Great to hear from you. Watch the Pete Fountain one too. AND don't forget to watch me sittin in with Pete playing Lady Be Good.
Foi uma das primeiras referências de trompete solo na minha adolescência. Ainda era mais "melodioso", sentimental. Menos jazz e virtuose. Mas marcante.
I don't know if Hirt was a "jazz" trumpter. But unlike a lot of more pop trumpeters he could sustain notes and shape them better than few others could do.

Amazing comment, so happy you shared these memories with us here. May your father (and all the great musicians he worked with) rest in peace.

That is beautiful music I like classic music also. And I'm a veteran southern farm boy.

⚘Me too exactly as you say it!
So proud of our wonderful talented musicians, from new orleans.
Pee Wee's "Send in the Clowns" solo is now legendary among jazz aficionados, and for good reason. Viva Pee Wee!

I thank Mr. JIM Valentine for putting this on you tube. Jim is a great clarinetist in his own right.

Joe Prejean on trombone. What a fantastic player. Al Hirt was the greatist trumpet player that ever lived!
I've long said that Al was a style unto himself.
It's about time someone posted this on RUclips!

Al Hirt one of the best trumpeters in the world, Every trumpeter has his own style but Mr. Hirt is among the chosen for glory. Louis Amstrong Harry James Roy Etzel Ray Anthony etc etc Very good trumpeters
AS a trumpet player, I don't think anybody could touch him. This includes Harry James and Doc Severinson.
Thanks for this post Jim!
Just WOW!! One FINE concert; what talent!
Magnificent.
This is great, but I wish somebody would list all the songs, please.
Thanks for this, Jim.

Such a fat, rich tone on that trumpet. All masters really. Dang, that trombone player was playing flute notes.
I don't know if Hirt was a "jazz" trumpter. But unlike a lot of more pop trumpeters he could sustain notes and shape them better than few others could do.
Who is the trombone player?
Joe Prejean on Trombone
I wouldn't trust this group with a box of donuts.
