  • Elric, Brian, Phil and Jules are joined remotely by Quentin Tarantino himself for an epic discussion about a great feature on the New Beverly website called "Tarantino's Reviews" where QT has been writing his own articles on movies and TV episodes. He also offers five of his own picks in response to our "Ripoffs" from way back in 2017.

What the f^#k is happening to the world?! The movie theater I worked in/at growing up in my hometown is closed. No one loves the movies anymore. It depresses me severely. Theaters are going away the way that the Drive-ins did when I was just a kid.
Working at the theater, as a projection-ist was the happiest time in my life. The people I met and worked with were like my family. We watched new films, ( to make sure that there were no bad splices) every Thursday night before the movies were officially released on Fridays. We practically lived there while I was in high school, and in the summers, we did. We partied in the theater, we dated each other, and most of all, we LOVED movies. Movies were our conversation. People who didn't know movies need not apply.
    And now it's gone.
Listening to Quentin Tarantino reminds me that the experience of going to the public movie theater is a fellowship experience that we can't replace. We can't let go of it. Seeing awesome cinematography on a theater screen connot be replaced. It's almost a spiritual ritual we experience. Listening to Quentins reviews and understanding all that he has achieved reminds me of all of that.Quentn Tarantino is awesome.

Sly Stallone had to rewrite the ending of Rocky II because Talia Shire (however you spell her name) had to leave the production and start filming The Prophecy! So that is why Adrian & Paulie ended up watching Rocky fight on TV because she came back to film the ending!

As far as JAWS rip-offs, I can make a case for KILLER FISH (1978), my favorite among that vibrant sub-genre.
Terrific cast, authentic late 70's coastal Brazilian locations, a tight, clever script with a variety of characters- both laconic and otherwise- that places the heist on equal level with the aquatic terror, intertwining that so the piranha aspect doesn't seem arbitrary or tacked on. I could go on about how much I enjoy the characters and their interactions, but let's just say that Lee Majors is in top-notch, laid-back Clint Eastwood/Bionic Man mode, Karen Black is a strong, smart female character who has her shit together and James Franciscus vividly portrays the cool, calculating villain who probably has a logical point in terms of his actions in the plot. Terrific musical score too.
And it was directed by Antonio Marghereti!
I would be quite surprised if Quentin doesn't like- or perhaps even love- this film.
    I sure do!

Or just don’t understand his art. It’s like when a comedian tells a joke and you don’t get it you don’t get mad at him and tell him he’s not funny. I feel like it should be the same way with movies.

Ahh, criticism without depth. Like a Tarantino film. Lessee... They're all _TOTALLY_ male-oriented. Women in his films never have agency, are always at best adjuncts to the story, like cars. That's one large criticism I've never read anywhere.
This doesn't seem like much in itself: but look at how much is closed off just by that. "We have to do this for Charlie" had nothing, _no_ depth or conviction, was just an empty *attempt at* giving 'motivation' to someone who had none. Even in Kill Bill, it feels like someone going through the motions in a male-centric way to boot, as did the female villains.
It felt like an all-male movie starring some women.
There's more to say. But that in itself should get people to see again what they've been missing.

Pauline Kael was so all over the map with her reviews -- on one page she gives Fellini's "Juliet of the Spirits" one short paragraph "a woman lives out her fantasies in the leftover sets from old MGM musicals ". Very dismissive and blunt (for a brilliant movie that is). Then on the opposite page , a HUGE detailed review for the flop movie "Just Tell Me What You Want" (1980) . But she really is a fun read. She also has you looking up words in the dictionary . Serious brain candy .

Juliet is probably my top Fellini overall. I can’t think of any Fellini I disliked. I do sorta get the weird pit-down she’s making… maybe she thought the movie would have a slew of rave reviews form everyone else.
I mean… City Of Women is like the male version and I probably like that a little better. 🤷🏻

52:00 I had a similar thing happen to me at my high school library. It was 1991 and they had a copy of 1985's Roger Ebert's Movie Home Companion. Once I looked inside to see if anyone had signed out the book in the last six years and I noticed no one ever had is when I chose to steal it! And I STILL have that book today and everytime I read a review from it, I think about the day I liberated it from its library prison. Good times.
