  • My wife Theresa, at the age of 49, was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease in 2018. In April of 2023, at the age of 54, I placed her into a memory care facility. In this video, I discuss the newly FDA approved intravenous medication, Leqembi (Lecanemab), that is the first treatment shown to reduce the rate of Alzheimer's disease progression.
    Update - Theresa passed away from this disease on March 3rd, 2024 at the age of 55. This channel will remain up in remembrance of her and to educate others about Alzheimer's Disease.
    Thank you all for your support.
    Much Love,

    Hello everyone and thanks for watching. I need to make a correction on this video. I meant to say that Medicare, not Medicaid, will cover a portion of the
    cost for Leqembi. However, from what I’ve read, both Medicare and Medicaid can assist with helping to pay for this treatment - for those that have been approved to receive it. I do hope something can be done to lower the cost of Leqembi and the associated cost of the pre-requisite brain scans. It is very expensive and needs to be more affordable for all.

      Why can’t Theresa not benefit from it only because she is in a memory facility. right now she has her memory meaning she knows her family.

    • @tpippen75
      @tpippen75  Год назад +3

      Hi Julia - The treatment is only indicated for those with Mild Cognitive Impair or the earliest stages of the Alzheimer's Disease. The treatment allows for those individuals to maintain their independence a little while longer before the disease advances to the later stages. Theresa is in Stage 6 where this treatment would be of no benefit as she has lost her independence and is already in an advanced stage. Doctors will not prescribe it to her as Leqembi cannot reverse the damage that has occurred nor slow down the progression at this point. Trust me, I would do/try anything to help her.

    I'm frustrated with this. It is $26,600 now. Insurance can make our part about $6,600. But the added required testing throughout can be $90,000.
    This is like teasing a dog with a bone, but tossing the bone to the moon. Dogs cannot jump that far. We cannot jump that far. That's not considering the possibility of brain bleeds. I feel like all the caregivers just went through an emotionally draining rollercoaster of hope. The crash at the end was heard throughout the world. I don’t have time for the big pharma games. Lives are at stake!!!! Greed is vicious!!!

      Hi Allison - Theresa has Covid and I actually have her home with me for 10 days. I picked her up yesterday afternoon. Many of the residents have Covid and they are mostly being confined to their room for 10 days. Several staff members also have it and the memory care facility is short staffed. I didn't want to leave Theresa isolated for that length of time, so I've got her back home. I will be taking time off work to care for her. I will most likely make a video about this sometime next week.

    Wow! Just this morning I was thinking I would come your channel and ask real quickly how things were going for Theresa and you. So glad to see this. I am going to be tied up for a little while, so I will have to come back later with some thoughts that might be helpful. For right now, let me ask if you meant to say Medicaid or Medicare? Medicaid is for the poor, while Medicare is for the elderly, the health insurance for those over 65. I could be very wrong, but I think if someone is on Medicaid, they would have no resources whatsoever to help with the cost. It makes sense to me that Medicare would pay for some of the cost, while those with a Medicare approved health insurance plan would pay the difference.

    I come from more than 17 immediate family members that died from Alzheimers...from my Mom straight up to my great grandma, great aunts, uncles, & cousins. As I age, I find myself wondering if the target is now on my back when I forget things or is it just the stress of living. There is now a blood test that checks for bio markers to show if you're at risk for developing AD. My community is having the testing done this weekend for free. I'm terrified to know as it would change how I lived my life (and not in a good way). I would never want my adult children to go through caregiving like I did for my Mom. A positive result would also then cause my children to wonder if they're next in line. God bless you for your gentle & loving care of Theresa. I suppose, it can't be cured without people volunteering for testing. We'll see if I can.

      Hi Dana - Generally speaking, getting lots of exercise, limiting stress and avoiding certain foods that give us an inflammatory response, all help in avoiding or delaying the onset of dementia related disease. Theresa ate well all her whole life and is still a vegetarian - she does like her sweets these days though. I give her all she wants because at Stage 6 Alzheimer's, I don't think diet makes her condition any better or worse at this point. Thanks for your question.

      Hi Carol - if your brother in law is in the Mild Cognitive Impairment stage and has confirmation of elevated Amyloid Beta, then he might be a candidate. However, I've read some material that suggested Leqembi was not indicated for other types of dementia. This treatment specifically removes Amyloid Plaques associated with Alzheimer's Disease. Amyloid is not present in some of the other dementias or the proteins form differently such as they do with Lewy Body. I am exited to learn that Emory is looking into this treatment for Lewy Body. I have a feeling that Leqembi will pave the way for other treatments like it - hopefully even better treatments that are even more effective and affordable.
