I think both she and Gladys Cooper deserved Oscars for Now Voyager. She plays from one extreme to the other, one of the greatest transformations of all time, whole her scenes with Cooper are multi-layered and electrifying, you see her go through oppression, defiance, defeat, truce and victory in those scenes. It’s still a much loved and revered film today, should have won on multiple accounts, not just the score.

Bette Davis is my all time favourite actress.
    Totally amazing!

I remember watching this when it first aired. Mom and I were a little disappointed that Walters was doing the interview, because she was still considered kind of a newbie and not taken very seriously. Bette here reminds me very much of my aunt Kay and some of the other ladies in my family at that time...a stylish, classy generation and the likes of which we will never see again, thanks to drug culture, and the Africanized population. RIP Bette, I still remember you like it all happened yesterday so you are not forgotten!

Bette Davis wow what a women. Love her and her outspoken manner. Would not have liked to have been her child or her husband mind you. But she is a true star. No beauty just pure talent and old stock that worked hard and fine tuned her skill. So she was nt a perfect mother but she did not abuse in any way her children. God help us if all the children who did not have perfect mothers wrote a book about it. Rod Steward wrote the song Bette Davis eyes and I really think her eyes are so expressive and almost crazy, they are her beauty.

I believe that the reason Bette Davis and Joan Crawford did not get along is because they were so much alike. I can just picture the two of them ripping each other apart in view of everyone and then when they were alone together say in one of their movie set trailers and smiling to one another and say...Boy we can act and laugh. God bless them both.

I don't see how they were alike - for one Betty was more raw - she wasn't afraid to look hideous even - Joan was always too vain for that. It seems to me that Joan acted like she was nice but probably wasn't and Betty acted like she was mean but, was probably nice. I think Joan was much more of a diva as well.

Thomas Martin Crawford wasn't fake in the way you speak, she simply felt her fans deserved to see her in a certain way.
She helped quite a LOT of young talents breakthrough into the industry though, she went out of her way to make cast and crew feel valued and nobody has ever been as grateful to her fans.

Andrew Spence Yes , -I whole-heartedly, agree. Also, Joan Crawford was a "creation" and once famous there was no turning back for "Billie". Poor, Joan Crawford ,having to always be, a personification , instead of a person. I knew a man who was close to May West : friends until her death. He met Joan Crawford one time , thinking (to himself) that the 2 ,former stars would be somewhat alike. He was wrong and compared Ms.Crawford to others of her ilk , as such, " a creation , unlike the other grand dames of Hollywood, Joan Crawford was her celluloid characters but never herself. " I have loads of respect for all the "stars" of Hollywood's "golden age". Those people worked hard for their fame and fortune. Today a "B" movie actor with a good agent ,can make good money and have some notoriety. During the "golden age" you worked constantly and you were labeled a "star" or nothing at all.

They were nothing alike. Bette Davis was a serious actress with range; Joan Crawford was a superficial "movie star". Bette Davis accepted aging: Joan Crawford tried to look 20 when she was 60. Bette Davis was a literate intellectual; Joan Crawford never read a book in her life. Bette Davis had more in common with plain spoken intelligent actresses such as Kate Hepburn or Barbara Stanwyck than with vapid Crawford.

What a presence. These were actors and actresses . They made themselves larger than life, they strived to become legends through their dedication and hard work. Bette Davis was absolutely all of what I stated and more. Ms. Davis and her peers weren't in Hollywood, " They Were Hollywood" .

I have a clipping from an old Life magazine that shows an antique factory time clock for employees that Bette Davis bought at an auction. She worked at the factory where the time clock had been when she first started working and she said that she vowed to someday own that clock...good for you Bette, the blue collar workers of America will always love you!

Barbara: "Did you get mellow or mellower as you got older?"
    Bette: "I'm afraid not!"
Bette Davis remained just exactly the same in her character despite her age.
Along with Lauren Bacall, she concentrated on being memorable, which I applaud very much. I adore both of the actresses. Seeing Bette, I realize no wonder Lauren Bacall idolized her and imitated her. If only Bette had been a
    non-smoker...

Even though Bette and Joan didn't like eachother, didn't like how each other acted at times, they still had great respect for eachother. It shows in their interviews. Like in this one: how Bette talks about Joan's accomplishments, how she came from nothing and became something extraordinary all on her own. How Joan chose Bette for Baby Jane because she knew her talent. Hate is a strong word and I dont think it was hate at all.
