The production is interesting, but very artisanal. I like that everything is recycled and goes into products and use, and this axe is made of rail steel, which means that the steel is very good.
@@rolandburisch9489 Tools steel tend to get brittle and break when subjected to welding. I experienced this with 80 CrV2, which is close to rail steel. This man uses this property to cheaply divide it
Nah their steel looks like shit, it shouldn't break like that. Try this with an european rail track, you will see they are MUCH tougher. Also there's no way a rail is close to 80crv2, it's structural steel, it's medium carbon at best
Great craftsmanship, but why does everything need to be thrown in the dirt, even the cold pieces? Seems to be a common theme in these type videos. Not so critical for an axe head but even tolerance sensitive items like gears get thrown on the ground and dragged through the dirt. A couple of rolling carts would save backs and wokmanship I would think
This is a Cutting Tool used manually which requires Hardness, which comes mainly from Carbon as a Content, Scrap Rail Steel is not suitable to make so much Hard Work with such a fine Skill having not required Carbon Content. Preparing this tool from scrap Rail Steel is alike Pushing a Wall doing hard work.
This steel might have a somewhat higher carbon content! Mild steel would not break as happened here as they broke it into pieces with a sledgehammer after applying a contraction weld. Who knows?
Rail is medium carbon steel according to the internet. It's able to be heat treated and hardened. What, you think ancient peoples had W-1 tool steel available? It's perfectly fine, you'll just have to sharpen in more often. Stop being a knowitall

The starting billet is cast iron; you can see how it's broken off the length and steel wouldn't break, it would bend.

Excellent video nice to see the axe being made
Why do you work so primitive with so much talent
Great video brother from the imperial county California 👍👍🖐️🇺🇲🇺🇲
Thanks for watching
Very good video.😀

Really nice camera work!
A man of many talents, I love seeing Ron Swanson moonlighting in the splitting axe factory when he is not running Parks & Rec in Pawnee, IN.
Who needs a table when you can just dig 2 holes into the dirt?
There is not a floor, table, bench, stool, etc., in the entire country.

Railway tracks are usually medium carbon steel that hardens very well.

Listen to the sound the axes make when being thrown on the ground - that is hard steel.
@@earluke2592 ha ha. Very scientific!
Heat treatment???
Thats proprietary information. Highly guarded. Possibly guarded by a guy with an axe.

I find it interesting they are making splitting axes in a country with no trees. 😂
They would do anything they can sell, making money from scrap
Made to split the necks of non believers maybe?
Not a single tree?

У них что рельсы чугунные? ломают как стекло. Из такого метала какого качества получиться топор?

This is what an OSHA inspector's nightmare looks like.
Notice they start to wear PPE! I see gloves, some glasses and even... shoes!
Power hammer is actually nice.
Wow, those are some seriously heavy duty bearded axes
I did not know the name of the shape, thanks you the info.

love to have one of these craftsman created axe.
What's the size of that piece
Those look more like hewing tools to me than splitting tools. In fact, they look very little like splitting tools.

Outstanding
Cavemen are learning new skills.
No heat treat? So they are useless
Heat treat would help, but far from useless.
They only use them for beheadings and dismemberment - so good enough.

Might explain why any store bought axes will not hold an edge because its made of this cheap shit iron
no climate change there then

WHY WHY do thease people all ways work on the fkg floor// better to stand at a bench..
The air is cooler, close to the floor, tables take up space , and are not good for every job.
And the job always goes back onto the floor, where someone must pick it up.
@@cranegantry868but it does not fall on your feet
@@patmiddleton3947 NOPE!... it is when it is being picked up, that's when the accidents occur.
