      was wondering when you'd get around to those . don't make a habit of eating them often , they got old to me quick and i can't hardly stand the taste of them anymore , just like military mre's

      The MRE....Meal, Ready to Eat. AKA the Mr. E. AKA the Mysterious Mr. E...
      -The SOB has a nice flakey version of Hard Tack in it.
      -Don't heat it with the heater....Use the heater to heat your ass when it gets cold at night.
      -You can make gourmet MREs with different ingredients combined from several MREs.
      -MREs come with a bottle of Tabasco in order for a Ranger to first burn his taste buds out in order to cover the nastiness of the MRE....Brilliant.
      -The Mr. E is also Nuclear, Biological and Chemical weapon proof.
      MEAL, READY TO EAT.
      -You can also "jungle cut" a bunch of them and carry all kinds of extra MREs.
      -Some foreign MREs come with Booze in them. French and Italian I do believe.
      -The ones I am seeing in Iraq at present...Are even HALAL... But they don't have booze in them.

    Really good one I’ve found is a pouch of dollar tree pre cooked rice $1.25 a retort pouch of shredded beef from the local grocery store $4 a retort of refried beans $1.25 and some seasoning. $6.50 and it’s enough to get 2 heavy meals can be eaten as is or warmed in water. Vacuumed packed tortillas with silica pack keep surprisingly long toss in some of those add a little butter and honey to fry them up for breakfast if you can fat and happy for a day.

    Hey Blackie.
    I've used the Hormel Completes quite a bit too. If you've got an old style USGI mess kit, they fit perfectly in the bottom pan laid flat, takes very little water to heat one up.

    New subscriber. I was talking with Matt Mercer at the Blade Show yesterday (Saturday) and when I told him I was from Alabama he said I should check out your channel. A few minutes later you walked up. It was a pleasure meeting you and having a little conversation. I will definitely try and attend some of your get togethers down in LA (Lower Alabama for non indigenous folks). I never even considered this type of meal choice for camping/hiking. Thanks for that idea.

    I've actually tried some of these, with some bread, I can make a meal out of them, an you can doctor them up with different spices. There good for hurricanes, quick an easy. Thx for the vid

    I have been using/ heating those immersion style for a few years. I was in the Army when they switched from C- rations to MREs- We called them “Meals Rejected by Ethiopians”!

    Thanks for this tip, Blackie.
    The 90 second rice packs fit in the same boat too: heat and eat right in the bag.
    There are also rice + plant protein quick pouches, like the Loma brand, that can cook up to a full meal with little waste afterwards.

    Good idea,have followed the same concept for years. I love M.R.E. meals. But times are hard.. We must be frugal to survive in difficult times.

    When I travel by vehicle-I wrap potato, carrot, onion etc plus a chicken in tinfoil. When getting close to meal time, stop, lift the hood & place wrapped food on the manifold. Travel 20-30 minutes, stop & turn the food to cook the other side. Travel another 20-30 minutes, stop & remove the food parcels-unwrap & enjoy a hot meal.

    I just retired from a steam fireman's job recently. I helped run large commercial boilers for a state prison. Every boiler had inspection ports for viewing flame conditions. These were recessed into the walls of each unit at even intervals, with a small "shelf" at each location. These were perfect for heating meals, we would wrap our food in foil, and in 10 minutes...Lunch!

    Blackie, something I do is go to Sam's Club {or other warehouse type outlet} and buy the bulk packages of the salt, pepper, mustard, ketchup, mayo, etc. just like the ones you get at fast food restaurants and put a few of each in a zip lock bag. Easy to use, inexpensive and very little trash to pack out. A local grocery wholesale outlet, open to the public has this stuff too. Sometimes you can get a variety pack that has 4 different items in smaller quantities. Easy way to spice up meals. There is quite a variety if these things out there.

    Oh an if you are cooking for more than one ...or have had a tough day and are really hungry, a packet of dried Ramen broken up and added to the beef stew stretches it quite a bit, if you have one of the fruit dryers ...just a bag of frozen mixed vegetables packs down real small and and sprinkling of them turns a regular package of Ramen into a cup of noodles or can add a little color and texture to an other wise kinda mushy freeze dried meal.

      very true and when its me and the wife i carry a larger pop i can drop in 2 meals at once so we both get what we want and from the hot water after meal we make coffee or hot choc and wash the spoons off simple and easy

    My biggest problem with pre made food is the salt levels. The other nutrients are fine but the salt will kill you long term.
    These entrees look like they have a reasonable salt content.
    Though the calories are a bit low, eating a few a day wouldn't take you too far beyond daily recommended, plus balanced with some other shelf stable but low salt foods would be nice.
    Makes them much more appealing even if they only have like an 18 month shelf life

    I like using campbells chunky soup series as an mre. if you open the can with a side cutter, you have a possible stove (bring some foil for a home made plate) , water carrier, or etc

    There are a number of items like this. Tried many. Recently I have started dehydrating ( just the air dryer type no fancy freeze drying yet) just regular pasta meals that I have cooked... spaghetti sauce dries rather well and rehydrate about like mountain house with just boiling water. Not Michelin restaurant quality but in my parts I am most often out in the snow and cold ...and ANY thing warm beats a frozen ham sandwich and a busted up snickers bar.

    I have used a high temp thermometer. On the dash. 140 to 160 degrees ,, back in late 80s in military I would prep my mre and use a little 100 mph tape to attach it to windshield to heat it ,, winter time I would wire it to the exhaust pipe right behind my cab on my 5 ton.

    I had thought of heating those that way because of something Swanson's made when I was a kid before microwaves were ubiquitous - back in the '70s and early 80's when TV Dinners were still in aluminum trays. They were small entrees - sliced roast beef with gravy, sliced turkey with gravy, that sort of thing. They were kept in the freezer and the package consisted of a plastic bag inside of a cardboard box 'sleeve'. You took the plastic bag out, dropped it in a pot of water and heated the water up until the entree thawed and heated then you just cut open the bag and dumped the entree onto your plate. We usually dumped them over a couple of pieces of toast. Mom would make mashed potatoes, green beans, etc. to go with them and it made a pretty good meal and they were individual servings so we could all pick a different one if we wanted. So, anyhow, I figured, "Why wouldn't that work with those Hormel meals?" There are also some ready to eat meals from, I think, the Campbell's company. There are southwestern versions sold under the Pace brand and Italian type versions sold under the Prego brand. They are shelf stable and come ready to eat in plastic pouches meant to be microwaved in the pouch. Those heat up very well using the same method - just tear open a corner of the bag to vent it first, just in case and stand the pouch up in the pot/water. They are made to stand upright in the microwave so it is no problem to stand them in the pot. I actually kind of like some of those better than the Hormel meals you are talking about and think they are even easier to heat.

    I have taken a spoon of self rising corn meal and added it to a cup of boiling water and made a second rate grits of sorts.....its better with sugar of course.

    I’ve done this. When I was in the army, we were starting to phase out the C-Rats, we would toss cans into hot water to heat them up. We would eat right out of the can. I still eat out of a can. 🇺🇸✌️

      i had a good friend who was in germany back in the 80's they landed a chinook and was waiting for weather to clear to take back off (heavy blizzard) some one asked if they could heat the company rations with the tail pipe.. they set the cans in a steel basked a milk crate i think and used a pole with a hoot to set it just in front of the tail pipe of the chinook hot food in 5 mins

    Hey Blackie! Thanks for the shoutout! "Campbell's Completes" work well as does the "Ready Meals" Also an old trick we used to do on the survey crew, take a square cake pan, mount it on top of your car's engine with a couple "throttle return springs" lay your chosen MRE inside (dry), fire up and drive off, by the time you get where you are going your food is hot!       My step-grandfather worked for General Shale brick makers. His job was to monitor the kiln among other things. There were small, metal doors along the kiln that they would open with poles to look inside the kiln. The kiln walls were so thick that he said you could wrap a potato in aluminum foil and lay it on the ledge inside one of those doors to cook. He said some guys would even heat TV Dinners that way back when they came in aluminum trays. He said that the kiln was so hot that it only took a few minutes and if you left your food too long it would incinerate and the ashes would just blow away down the kiln.

    Blackie, It was my understanding that Hormel developed these for the military, but did not get the contract. So they took it to the civilian market.

    if you use a sunshade that you put in the front windshield and place the meal between the sunshade ant the windshield it will heat it quicker. also beans and chief Boy R D pastas are also precooked.

    I'm 67, born & raised in & around the Okefenokee Swamp in south Georgia.
    I'm not up north or out west, I maybe a little farther south than you over in Alabama.
    Now if you're in good health, GREAT!, I'm real glad to hear it.
    Me, I've been considerably better, if you get my drift.
    I'm doing better now than say, 8 or 10 years ago when I had to go on disability.
    I still have health issues, including problems breathing; now that ain't a good thing, pard.
    So you can believe me or not.
    The absolute most important thing anyone can do for their health is watch what they eat.
    When I was coming up, we just did not have a lot of the 'fake food' people eat nowadays.
    I had what we all called a 'good upbringing', meaning folks that tried to raise us right.
    That included trying to feed us good, on home-raised cows & pigs, & a farm garden.
    We just did not have, & couldn't eat, the stuff most people eat today.
    I go to the grocery store & I see people buying garbage I wouldn't feed a hog.
    At last count at least SIX doctors all agreed on one thing;
    they all say 98%-99% of what is sold in grocery stores ain't fit for human consumption.
    There are doctors right now on youtube that have reported on "food additive addiction".
    That is a real thing.
    So, if it was a genuine emergency, I would eat some of that garbage, after I fasted 4-5 days.
    By then my stomach would have shrunk enough I couldn't eat much of it.
    But I would have to be in a situation where I couldn't expect to get real food anytime soon.
    Because I've found out from experience, eating garbage ain't good for people.
    The stats show blindness, cancer, cardio-vascular disease, & diabetes are all increasing.
    Diet is the main reason.
    I'd rather go hungry & fast 4-5 days than eat some of that fake food, but that just me.
    You do you, & eat whatever you want to.
    But I've improved my health by changing my diet, & I'm not going back to eating fake food.
    Just sayin', it ain't for me, if you want it, fine, eat it.
    I'm going to eat real food, made by the Almighty, not fake garbage manufactured to make money.
    Because my health depends on it.

      Ur right...it's true bad for you..I'll say this I bought some of the meals in bag like the Hawaiian meal or Greek rice meal,well I never will again bc I ate some feeling bad my youngest son winded up in er,stopped up and major gas build up...yep throwed what I had left in cabinet in garbage.also those harmel meals all bad for you,now food in metal cans is better... however lot these foods are bad regardless or what is said..gov way of killing and for pharmical companies to make money

    ready to eat rice and a packet of tuna, chicken or bbq pork or a can of roast beef in gravy.. the tuna, chicken and bbq packets are great for storm bags etc add a can of potato salad or 3 bean salad for a cold meal.. you can get single portion tubes of different nut butters, some with attached tubes of jelly

    one of my favourite hikes has no reliable water sources for three days so freeze dry meals are expensive and no advantage as I have to lug the water anyway I use bags of precooked rice and packets of meat and fish they are easy to combine and reheat and very cheap

    I agree! Ready to eat food items you can pick up at the grocery store are plentiful and much more economical than one of those expensive add boiling water backpacking meals found in the camping department. Canned/packaged meat and vegetables, beans, soups and chili, rice and pasta dishes, cereal, oatmeal, and breakfast bars, etc. I’m going to have to give those Hormel Completes a try now that you’ve made the suggestion. Almost anything that is shelf stable,meaning that it has already been cooked and just needs to be heated to taste. No refrigeration required. Packaging for the items bought at the grocery store might add more bulk and weight than those backpacking meals? I guess there is always some sort of trade off.       yep there is a trade off i was going on a long hike (55miles) back in the 80'a and a friend was going as well i took cans of ready to eat right off the shelf stuff he brought camp meals add water type of stuff but he also had to haul water for the meals and fuel to power the stove plus the stove plus the pot all i carried was the cans and a long tea spoon and at each trail head i dropped all the empty cans off in the trash my pack got lighter each day

    Great Vid! I will use some of the Campbell's Ready Meal pouches...good thick bags full of ready to eat goodness! And...walmart has some meat pouches (chicken, bbq pork, spam, etc) not to mention canned hash, ham, tuna & chicken too.

    I remember as a kid when my family went on road trips dad would wire cans of pasta inside the engine compartment. Nothing tasted better than hot pasta on a freezing winter day miles from home

    Back in the late 70s on winter coyote hunts in Eastern Oregon we would put cans of soup ect. on the rigs engine have a hot meal when we wanted eat and put another on to heat..hot meals mmmmmm.

    Could not tell you how many cans of canned spagetti I shared with my brother when we were out hunting or fishing. One time it was late November and the can was frozen from the trunk of his car. Set the can on the engine block and melted the outer layer, then ate it with a wooden spoon. As he used to say, "It will keep your stomach walls from rubbing together."

    I use to eat these when I was a platoon leader in an ambulance platoon in 1st Infantry Division and later as company commander in a MASH and took them to the field as back up in case we got no supplies coming in for one reason or another. Many of my soldiers were raised on fast food and they thought I was kind of nuts. I was nuts until we got to the field and food didn't show up because of weather or whatever. I should have bought stock in this product years and years ago.

    You can also get packets of chicken and tuna of various flavors - already cooked, and packets of various types of rice - already cooked. Individual packets of Spam, etc...The Hormel's are good, but some dishes can be high in sodium.

      very true i did a dish in the simple cooking series where i too a tin of fish filets and dropped them in the boiling water and once hot i added instant rice to the water to have a warm fish dish

    Back in the day when I was in the military,we would place different MRE meals such as the hot dogs in the hot sun for a while and have a reasonably hot meal! ATB Sam Adler from Vietnam

    I like the Indian curry lentil things that come sealed in a bag from Trader Joe. Just boil the bag in water for ten minutes and it is ready to eat.

    Campbell soup and Prego used to make ready meals that were in a retort pouch and you could buy them from Walmart., but I haven’t seen them in stores since 2019 when Covid started. If anyone knows where to get them there very good👍

    I've been doing immersion heating on different frozen meals in my kitchen, so long as they don't need to cook or fry and it works great! Never thought about the portability aspect... this is a juicy idea!
    I had never heard or seen non-frozen microwave meals in Canada, but even some frozen meals (that are already fully cooked, obviously) could be used the same way and still last a few days thawed in the original package -they're fully cooked and sealed. Bonus: they keep your beer cold for longer.

    i think it's from sue bee they're called lunch in a can they're a can of either tuna salad or chicken salad and crackers in a pack for about i haven't looked at the price lately though but they were $1.50-$2.50! i've seen some carrying those kids lunchables as well as these salad kits they've got out! a lot of the time we'll get those jack link chubs some blocks of cheese and crackers for a no cook meal as well! we've taken to getting those breakfast bars and biscuits in place of clif bars for the trail just as good but a damn sight cheaper at the dollar stores!!

    This might sound moronic, but..
    I watched your Swedish cook set chili video. I have recently acquired one of these cook sets (they are getting hard to find).
    The chili looked good for a trial run.... The video was unclear as to how much of the mix you added to the Quart of boiling water. was it half the bag?, and how long did you keep it boiling after it was added?

      ok what i do is this take water add to pot for the rough amount of food you want to eat( 1/4 / 1/2 / 3/4 pot) once the water is at a good boil add i n the dry chilli mix , stir let it swell and puff up, if too watery add more i do this and it comes out about right each time

      my friend would take a bottle of coffee ( stainless steel water bottle) and leave on his dash at the job site the sun on the black bottle inside the closed truck would stay hot all day

    this kinda unrelated, but i do roofing in florida, we dont get a lunch. cause there's a job to do and you aint going home till its done. but on our air compressor. and probably most. you can place a can of soup, chicken noodle or chef boy wearescrewed ravioli(etc.) on top of the muffler saftey screen(?). and will rotate like a can of beer in ice cubes... 5 to 10 minutes its warm enough to eat. yeah there's alot of sodium in those,...... but so does gatorade etc. it takes your body a little while longer to process food instead of just flushing out water.
    as i said totally unrelated..... just wanted to share

      i have put still un opened cans of stew /bbq / soup / ect peel the label off and drop the can in the water and boil for say 10 min then take off heat and let water cool down for 5 min pull out can open and its nice and warm

    this doesn't look very healthy, warming up the plastics and eating highly processed food. It's better to take real dinner in a Stanley vacuum food jar, tasty, healthy and no heating needed, it'll keep it warm all day
