The black drummer Reg Isidore, had the feel and groove for Trower's band! His drumming made this 3 piece band sound as close to how Cream sounded as a 3 piece!
well it was 3 great musicians for a while that produced those masterpieces,i doubt any could have been replaced and neither would have produced the overall without the other at that time, for sure the guitarist trower was the most important but without those pros he wouldn't have those albums as pure
Wow, that was definitely dream-like. Loved it. Thanks to Wayne for putting this in the poll. And thanks to SAD for the review. And a special thanks to Sifa for the dating tip. I need all the advice I can get! 😂🤣
P.S.- I have an old Trower instructional DVD from 1990 where he demonstrates the intro to this song among other things. 2 more factors on his tone manipulation in general is that he is playing through both Marshall and Fender heads, and he demonstrated how he changed the basic guitar tone by adjusting how open his wah wah pedal was set. He had another pedal on for the basic Uni-vibe sound, but he didn't mention it.
How many exellent guitarists are there from the 60s and the 70s? Seams like endlessly many. And my God, yes, I would love to play this song to you, Sifa! Greetings! /Ulf
Thanks for your reaction. I had an almost magical experience seeing Robin's band in a small club called Shadows in the Westport district in KC back in the day, around '95. The club had a 120 max occupancy. The wife & I arrived too late to be the front in line, but when we got inside the only free table was the exact table I would've chosen had I been first to enter. It was unbelievable, & so was his performance! Robin is an unreal string shaker (bender), especially when realizing how heavy gage his strings are. I think his gage was the same as SRV's - 13 to 56. I could only do vibrato like that if the strings were like rubber bands... LoL.
Beautiful song. Always loved this but prefer the live version. The guitar is obviously great but James's vocals make it a classic. Robin is still doing the circuit. I last saw him just before all the Covid shit and he still sounds great. Nice reaction. I was the one who introduced you to Robin and makes me feel good you're so into it.
@@chazblitz too right. I know Trower gets all the accolades but Dewar co wrote this and other Trower stuff and it's his vocals that gives the songs, as Zappa would say, "the eyebrows", lol. Maggie Bell's vocal style would be fun to see Dan and Sifa react to. Maybe one to nominate on the additional reactions. It would certainly get my vote.
This song has that Hendrix-like rhythm style that has been compared to stuff that Curtis Mayfield did. I think he used a Uni-vibe pedal like Hendrix did for those Leslie-like sounds. Later he switched to Fulltone (Deja-vibe) pedals, and now that company sells a whole line of Robin Trower endorsed products. At 78, he is touring with a new album featuring a female singer. I don't think it was down-tuned more than his usual whole tone down - to play it live, you would have to switch guitars in the middle of the song. It would be easier to switch the pickup you are using and change the volume and tone controls for a different sound.
I have loved this song for almost fifty years, but never understood why it wasn't called "Spellbound," which is heard numerous times throughout the song, versus "Daydream" which is heard once in the first line of the song. A good example of a song where everyone involved did it exactly right. Except the title.😆
Don't think Trower ever used a "Leslie" ... but did use a UniVibe to get that swirling sound.... Hendrix used a UniVibe on a couple things (most notably The Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock).... and that's mainly why the distinct "Trower Sound" was said to be the Reincarnation of Jimi
Nothing compares to Trower's sound live. No recording does it justice. he's up there age wise(says me the 71 year old) so if you have an opportunity to see him, do it, 'cause it might be gone.
I got to see him and the Robin Trower trio with incredible vocalist/bassist James Dewer twice back in the day ( late 1970's). I am so priveleged to have been there. Comparisons with Jimi Hendrix are so off the mark. They were both blues/rock guitar geniuses, but that is where the comparison ends. They went in their own directions.
I used to have this on 8-track. The track change happened right in the middle of this cut, and faded out for a few seconds before the switch, then took a few more seconds to fade back in. Gawd I hated that tape. It would have been better if it had just "clicked" with no fade out or in.
Robert Fripp sought out Robin to teach him how to play guitar. His comments are parallel to your comments, he said that why Robin is the greatest guitarist is that ''every note matters.'' Fluid as.
Great song! For a better version, ( in my opinion ) give a listen to it off the Robin Trower Live album from 1976. It has a much fuller sound, matter of fact, the whole album is pretty awesome.🤠👍👍👍 Also, just kinda wondering why they didn't call the song " spellbound "🤔🤣
I love you guys, you always do a nice and professional job. It may very well be just me, but I would truly refrain from texting on air. The segments are only slightly longer than the single song. People really value your opinion, so when you are distracted it may defeat the entire point of listening intently and then rendering an opinion, based on what you just heard kind of. I promise i'm not trying to be mean, but yeah this Robin F'n Trower. He deserves a good listen ❤

Robin Trower - guitar
James Dewar - bass, vocals
Reg Isidore - drums
Matthew Fisher - producer; organ on "Daydream"
think this was your original choice, so nice one Wayne.

The guy was a Tone Monster for sure.
Trower is so good. More please. And i love the singer Jim Dewer. So sad hes gone. Until next time stay well and poppin for fresh
They were both amazing! Thanks for watching David!
Robin was a Tone Monster. Played a Strat and used Univibes / DejaVibe type effects. It kind of emulates a rotating Leslie speaker. Wicked sound.

The version from the live album is amazing!
I was lucky enough to see Jimmy Dewar in a local pub playing bass for Frankie Miller. Two amazing voices for the price of a pint.
Love, love, love this song. You can hear Jimi's influence on Robin's playing.

About to Begin also a trip

Now we need to get some Stone The Crows on here with Dewar dueting with Maggie Bell!!!

@@paulfenwick8767 The eyebrows and the Scottish afro!
@@chazblitz 😆that's maybe where he gets his soulfulness from, lol
Loved/love this one so so much. Thanks for doing it. Cheers 🍻 😊❤
Robin's tribute to his friend, Jimi Hendrix.

@ R.Gray. I listened to Hendrix playing Machine Gun live recently. The resemblance is uncanny. 👍
Such a difference from what he was playing in Procul Harem
8.26.24. A superb analysis🎯 of Robin Trower‘s🎸music! ☝🏼I was in high school when this song came out✅
Thanks so much, we appreciate you!

I had heard bridge of sighs album I believe in the 70's..he could play.

Nobody’s texting. We’re either looking up the song list or finding details on the song
Awesome 😎
