Perhaps they don’t want to censor medical anomalies as the person cannot control that. The whole point of the movie is to make Tourette’s accepted by society. Even when you call the queen a c*nt. On the other hand political statements are deliberate comments and don’t have a place in this show. Neither does a racial slur, but it is debatable when the person can’t control it. It maybe even shows how deeply rooted these racial comments are and we need a lot more education to eliminate these words in our vocabulary.
They wanted people talking about it, so they didn't censor it. I think its for shallow and vapid reasons, and not to call attention to disabilities in general.
But also we're adults and know what Tourette's? is, so why are we even talking about it? And no, you don't get to be offended by someone who said the N word when they have tourette's. Some of these idiots have learnt NOTHING for Trump's rise and MAGA, it's like they want a third term of MAGA. STOP IT.
@scepteredisle ok, this is the BAFTAs, nothing to do with maga. But honestly, if you just look at one of the few comments above yours, you will see that people do NOT understand what it is at all. They do not get that it is uncontrollable, that the person cannot control the language coming out of their mouth, and that is why it is a condition that limits possibilities for a lot of people, if the workplace is not a tolerant place.
If you've been following this story at all and didn't know it's the BAFTAs fault 100% and not the guy with tourettes just means you closed your eyes and ears on purpose. That's on you.
I’ve been best mates with a strong Tourette’s sufferer for 40 years, since childhood. He will blurt out the N word, the C word and everything in between, and everyone who knows him knows that. And he’s dark skinned himself!!! I would never sit him next to a microphone at such an event! Shame on the event organisers and editing team for not doing better, because it’s this poor guy that will cop so much abuse now
Geez Louise, all these (supposedly white) people making excuses for the extremely offensive and hurtful thing that Tourette’s guy blurted out. Like, he couldn’t have said “cauliflower” or “symbiosis” or “integument” or something? Sorry, I got a bit silly there. IMHO, there is no excuse for exclaiming the N word in public and then having someone else making a dumb, lame excuse for it afterward. Sheesh. And oh, by the way, I’m white.
Thank you so much, Mr. Patrick Byrne 5070, for this helpful demonstration of how to use the word “nah”; let me add a little context for our readers. “Nah” is slang for “I appreciate your contribution to this dialogue. Here is mine.” So you see, even though it sounds completely dismissive of another person’s opinion, it actually celebrates it. We’re all just doing our best here, right? Keep up the great work everybody! P.S. - I’m interesting in what makes this humour typical 2010?
@TheRealTrueCrimeAnalyst see this is why Aussies invented "yeah nah" so it can be more easily distinguished from the solo "nah". "Yeah nah" is slang for what you described (after removing the boundless sarcasm you were exercising). Whereas just "nah" is what @patrick clearly intended to convey as a bot, or a troll or probably both.
@patrickbyrne5070 So, what you're saying is that in 2010 a person who "looks 12" (?!?) couldn't be "incisive, truthful, and wickedly cutting with the humour"? Or that 2010 is the year of no humor? or that you are the measure of what "incisive, truthful, and wickedly cutting with the humour" is? I smell racism over here...following the step of your racist pdf leader, I suppose. Get a grip, man!
@krishadyn5211 Apparently John was concerned about appearing, as his tics amplify with anxiety and the BBC told him everything would be fine. He was forty rows from the front, but near a mic. And look what happened. :/
@Chan-zn7wb they promised him they would edit his tics out as a condition for him attending. Then they went behind his back and didn't even apologize to the black actors affected, making him look even worse.
They didn't warn Michael B. Jordan or Delroy Lindo. You can tell by their shocked reaction. They didn't apologize to them after the fact, either. It's the usual racist bee ess. Boycotting BAFTA and the BBC forever.
One of the smartest thing TDS ever did (besides getting Jon back on regularly) was to give Josh the anchor chair. If you haven't seen his standup, you are truly missing out!
I think the microphone thing is a bit of a misdirected point. Davidson was yelling loud enough for the people on stage to clearly hear him. There's likely no way they could have sat him anywhere far enough from any mics not to pick it up.
Because they wanted it to be heard. I've attended plenty of award shows & they could've sat him near the rear where his voice wouldn't have been picked up as clearly by the mic.
@Zzyzzyzzs the microphone thing is important bc it was right in front of him (he was sitting 40 rows back, btw) when they knew very well how his condition manifested. so even if there were verbal tics that didn't reach the stage, it could have been picked up and broadcast to people watching. its like they wanted something to happen.
@Steph6.0 | Don't be silly. The BAFTA isn't run by moustache-twirling villains out of a children's cartoon. What, do you think they somehow knew this would happen and orchestrated all of it? Of course not. It was simple incompetence. When organizing a big event, it's pretty easy for something like this to be overlooked, especially when most folks forget things like Tourette Syndrome even exists.
@raniemott5441SNL gave us a bunch of comedians who tend to play the same caricature in every movie they star in. TDS gives us people who feel genuine in every appearance they make. They are leagues apart at this point.
No, not for nothing. The BAFTAs have historically been anti-black and the BBC despises Scots, particularly working class Scots, with a passion: that Scots who know John’s story leapt to his defence and that people of colour who don’t understand Tourette’s or Coprolalia jumped to Michael and Delroy’s defence before everyone took a deep breath to realise both were slighted, is EXACTLY what they wanted So, no, not for nothing but to keep the minorities down and at each other
They set him next to a microphone and didn't bleep it out with 2 hours of lead time? Nah, this doesn't sound like incompetence, my man was set up. They're intentionally exploiting his tic for engagement rage-bait, plain and simple.
It's what happens when you have sensitivity to disabillity not knowing what to do when that disability causes shock to other groups perfectly entitled to be sensitive about racism. (The black people rose above, it in my view. They were perfect gentlemen. 👍)
FWIW, the UK doesn't have the same beeping culture as the US. Rather we have more of a culture of doing stuff live with zero delay. Beeping started much earlier in the US.
He’s not messing around when he talks about these two communities getting together and popping off together. That’s the majority of Americans if we work TOGETHER WE WILL BE THE HEAT OF THE SUN. Thank you Josh. This man? He’s carrying the team and we need to do better. Thank you dude. Also that suit is on point. Looks awesome on you my dude.
"This man?" Out of place rhetorical question, this is why we have to suffer RAM and water shortages. Thank you for normalizing the garbage "AI agents" making garbage comments, Micro$lop.
I have tourettes (not the swearing kind) and i saw so much hate for both sides, it was extremely depressing, this video was great! Thank you for not villifying either side and instead turning that blame to the corporations that put this man in an extremely vulnerable position and allowed this word to be aired unedited. Thats who the anger should truly be aimed at!
Especially so, when John's condition has been well documented for over 30 years. The BBC airing those documentaries previously. Not to mention the fact they should have watched "I swear" in some format, prior to inviting John to the award show. I don't have tourettes (I'm Autistic) and watching this movie has educated me on traits I was unaware of. The motor tics especially. It explained something that would frequently happen to me during visits to a health centre, concerning a young woman slapping me, for what I assumed was other than a tic.
The amount of black americans that have heard these same points from me, and roundly ignored them to bully a disabled man is astonishing. Even when I mentioned the black american politician who tics the N word, they just said he was racist too. Mind boggling hate coming from America, as is the norm, but this was not from fscsts.
@-smellerbee-if you commented without doing any research, and bullied a disabled man in the process, that's just as bad. Hopeful that you didn't do that. What say you?
@-smellerbee-I didn't homogenise anything. I commented on the people I have spoken to about this, that were continuing to label a disabled man racist, despite knowing the facts. That's fair in my book.
John spends a lot of time mentoring young people who would otherwise join gangs. He's always been open about his tics leading him to shout the things he fears, not what he thinks. The BBC hung him out to dry for controversy and views. And forcing Michael B Jordan and Delroy to be accepting. Disgusting on BBC and Baftas to set people up like this.
And in the UK, if you watch *any* live television (even if it's not the BBC), you *have* to pay for a "TV license", which goes to the BBC. I think it's roughly £140 ($200) per year. You can opt out, but if you do, they send you harassing letters hinting that they're going to send debt collectors to your house to check you don't have a TV. (Note: you don't have to have a license to *own* a TV, just if you use it to watch live TV. So if you only use it as a screen for a games console, tough. £1000 fine.)
@mintygreyThat's more than a hypothetical for a lot of people. I have a TV but it's neither connected to an ariel or has any app to live stream. Not that I have the slightest intention of letting anyone in my house to check it however..! 😂 You should give Blackbelt Barrister a watch on RUclips, he's pretty fiesty about BBC bullying
So he fears black people or he thinks black people are n******? Wunmi also got called the n-word by him. At what point do you realize you should leave? You are hurting people with your words?
I highly recommend the video by Sweet Anita on this situation. She has verbal tics, but understands that those tics still have an impact on other people. And she''s biracial, it's heartbreaking to hear how she talks about the dynamic with her father.
The bit about her father was so sad to hear. I've been subscribed to her for years but I had no idea about that. She did a new video on the SNL tourettes skit
Her race should have nothing to do with it. Her opinion on Tourette Syndrome isn't more valuable or more credible because she's more than one race. Stop trying to shoehorn race into literally EVERYTHING, you absolute buffoons.
BBC was able to edit out someone screaming "Free Palestine", because they had a two hour delay.....so to air that "outburst" was definitely a calculated choice.
Response to this event has been very interesting to watch, because it requires empathy towards both John Davidson and also Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo, but also holding to contradicting opinions (person with Tourette’s cannot suppress their ticks and hearing slur directed towards you even when involuntary is very hurtful) at the same time.
Then finally like JJ looking at the bigger question of how/why it even aired in the first place. That question is very useful nowadays in so many ways.
One small point: It wasn't "directed" towards anyone. That's the point. Imagine you suddenly sneeze, and someone in the room looks at you horrified and demands to know why you directed a sneeze at them. Let me give you another one: A black person walks into a room. There is a rap song playing they've never heard before and don't recognise the artist. The n-word blasts out during a verse. Is the black person offended?
I just cannot get over the irony of the fact that Davidson was there in the first place because a biopic about his life and his struggle with tourettes was nominated.
Warner Brothers hear it and they told the BBC to edit out the slur, but they didn't. Even if the BBC didn't hear it themselves, they were told by someone who did hear it and they did nothing about it!
@DeniseRowntree-c3h interesting how Black folks are ALWAYS told to “get over it” …. nothing can be gotten over until the harm caused is genuinely addressed …..may you receive exactly what you deserve in Life 🤲🏾
@samagramz The BAFTA Awards has been going since 1949 & it is a not-for-profit organization run on charitable contributions, so there is no UPSIDE for them in 'bad publicity' - not everything in life is engineered or a conspiracy, it was a mistake, end of, grow up...
@Den@DeniseRowntree-c3httle conspiracy theory I have here. In the UK the BBC is very unpopular at the moment from both sides, right and left. The right think they’re woke anti-British immigrants lovers (all the regular right wing cry points). Many on the left see them as complicit in genocide. So I think they basically micced him up so that if anything bad or embarrassing to them happened in the show (IE the winner shouting ‘free Palestine’) they’d broadcast something John said to drown out the controversy.
There’s a distinct difference between giving someone a “free pass” vs acknowledging that someone should not be condemned for doing something legitimately beyond their control. The man has also experienced a lot of hate in his life, and especially those of us who are neurodivergent, would feel compelled to speak up, regardless of our skin colour. This weekend’s SNL skit demonstrated that ignorance exists even where they should know better. The BBC on the other-hand, they’re fair game.
Ok, I completely agree with you. The problem is when we fail to recognize the hurt and distaste coming from hearing that word aggressively shouted either at you, or as you watch a video listening to it. Of course none of this was in his control, but I do feel for Delroy and MBJ and black Americans in general simultaneously
The SNL skit is genuinely so upsetting. I don't have Tourette's, but I have a lot of "invisible" conditions that people think I'm faking, and to spread the "haha but what if people were FAKING DISABILITY for PERKS" idea is such a dangerous narrative that was already out of control -- I work at a college that sends out news on higher ed, and there's been so many thinkpieces lately like "are colleges being TOO accommodating?!" and as someone who, my whole life, was vastly under-accommodated, it's been really hard to think of them being rolled back even further because of all this "the fakers could be anywhere" bs that so many in power are promoting right now.
@Emileiggggghit was incredibly insensitive, SNL didn’t think or didn’t care, either way it’s arguably worse than the BBC’s failure as it was deliberate over incompetence. And I’m sorry for your struggles, for what it’s worth I know what it’s like.
I agree. I think there’s a big difference between telling someone that they’re incorrect when they say that people with Tourette’s are using it as an excuse to be offensive, and giving someone a free pass. If John Davidson called someone a slur and he was actually calling them that slur, he wouldn’t get a free pass. Someone could have Tourette’s *and* be a racist, the two aren’t mutually exclusive. But this was a symptom of his condition. He also shouted out other slurs during this taping- homophobic ones specifically- but that hasn’t caused an issue because they were censored appropriately. The BBC beefed it big time. They must understand that some words go beyond the level of ‘offensive’ otherwise-neutral curse words, and they should have done way better.
This, I get the initial backlash by Black [Americans] to him saying that word as a White man, but the temperature of the backlash was disproportionate. You'd think he a grant wizard from the KKK and when people tried to explain what Coprolalia is they just doubled down. Even Black people with that condition tried to explain and they were called out for 'defending a White man'. Then you get the NAACP comments, _then_ SNL skit and it just continues the ignorant pill on.
@Chan-zn7wb it's crazy logic. One group outraged that people are not sensitive to their pain and suffering. Then in the same breath, condemn a man who suffers 24/7 with a debilitating disorder. 😢
@sougarcia8890 | No, see, the mistake you're making is assuming they KNOW the guy has Tourette's, or even know that Tourette's exists. The internet is FULL of misinformation, and society's lack of mental health awareness is already a problem, so you can't blame folks if all they hear is "a man shouted the n-word at the BAFTAs." Who you CAN blame are the producers who failed to censor it, and the media who made "N-WORD SHOUTED AT BAFTAS" their headlines, knowing full-well that most people would just see that and jump to conclusions.
@sougarcia8890 His 'Whiteness' cancels out his disability don't you know. 😒The acknowledge of 'trauma' and 'impact' is only in one direction and never reciprocated. I've seen this time and time again from Tumblr days. It never changed, just metastasised, silver-lining if anything is everyone is seeing it now.
Johnny Davidson does a lot to raise awareness. Yes, he suffers from coprolalia (involuntary swearing), but that doesn't stop him being a wonderful person. It's not a laughing matter.
Just to be clear, tourettes doesn't make you "speak your inner truth" like alcohol lowers inhibition. What it does is tap into the thing you are most fearful of saying, which you are actively trying to supppress, and pipe it directly to your lips. Someone who wasn't ashamed of saying those words would not have a tic making them say them.
it's like people who struggle with ocd and severe intrusive thoughts. those are the exact opposite of what you desire, respect or believe, yet those pop up into your head, especially at the worst times! the fact that those intrusive thoughts for people who have tourettes are actually neuron misfires that result in them being VERBALLY said immediately is so painful! to have that exploited at an event this scale is abhorrent.
See, that's the thing if he truly didn't think it was a bad word to say, his tic could have manifested as something else. In the same way they demanded he immediately apologise to the actors he shouted it to, despite the fact that his very nerves would have caused him to tic it out even more . He excused himself due to to intense shame and embarrassment. These people don't care about logic, context or empathy and they just want their pound of flesh. They are the exact people that would carry torches and pitchforks, yet they lecture us about 'empathy', 'trauma' and 'recognising one's privilege'? F^cking LOL.
@Chan-zn7wb Honestly an apology towards the actors was entirely deserved. Not for having tourettes, of course, but just for the hurt caused to them in the moment. Delroy Lindo was only 12-13 when segregation ended in America. So just because the intention to harm wasn’t there doesn’t mean the impact wasn’t there. Davidson did well though to apologise privately and then make statements. That’s how it should be, though people kept demanding public ones only. It was obviously mortifying for all parties involved. Michael B Jordan & Delroy Lindo were a class act however it’s upsetting that black people always have to be the understanding, patient ones, even in the face of abusive language. Ultimately, both parties were exploited by the BAFTAs. It’s terribly upsetting. It’s truly the BAFTAs and the people treating this as a binary situation when it’s full of so much more nuance that make this conversation so difficult to have.
They didn't beep out Free Palestine. There was a full part of the speech he gave that was cut out, and he ended with Free Palestine. No bleeping. They cut out like a full minute or two.
@acme181169 'well, actually'... Jonathan says he was uncomfortable. He warns the reporter on the red carpet. So let's believe he knows what happened most. I know (of) someone who says whenever she gthe airport and security says 'hold still' her ticks start.
I knew Josh would approach this with empathy for the marginalized and rage against systems. The kind of comedian we need more of right now, and I appreciate his kindness and advocacy for a better world!
@Kev@KevinWendigo63 about you call a black person the N-word and see how they feel? I hope you understand that it’s a derogatory slur white people used to dehumanize black people during slavery. It’s a painful meaning.
@KevinWendigo63how about you call a black person the N-word and see how they feel? I hope you understand that it’s a derogatory slur white people used to dehumanize black people during slavery. It’s a painful meaning.
Yeah this whole thing stinks. It really feels like the producers set up the guy with Tourette's hoping he would have an outburst which would become a viral moment for ratings.
Er, the BBC is the most watched media source on Earth, with RUclips a close second. They don't have to chase ratings. Something broadcast on the BBC today will have more views than anything broadcast on a US cable or terrestrial channel.
@TheBadAdvices-e5k It's more that they're just very widely trusted and have historically had a significant presence overseas (funding's been reduced in recent years but the BBC World Service has been broadcasting around the world for nearly a hundred years). All of which is obviously hurt by occurrences like this, meaning they're _very_ unlikely to deliberately court bad publicity to "go viral". (you know the BBC are a publicly funded public service broadcaster right ? So their continued existence - which recently is increasingly under threat - _literally_ depends on the goodwill of the UK populace and/or policymakers. For the BBC there _very much_ IS such a thing as bad publicity)
@E1line-r6dThe BBC is only partly publicly funded. They made million off lisencing Doctor Who to disney a few years ago. They sell other programming too. The news service eaens money from TV lisncing As fewer people have TVs, and don't pay that tax they absolutely need more engagement. Sky news in Britian seems more watched than the BBC.
You can also look at that situation without blaming anyone- it simply showed the uncomfortable truth of Tourette syndrome, it showed the daily life of people suffering from this quite unimaginable disease for most people. It's just real life which unfortunately can be harsh and hard when you have to deal with this on a daily basis ...
Right on. I have OCD with occasional outbursts. My wife has heard some pretty crazy stuff... sometimes she can't tell whether I'm having an episode or I stubbed my toe. But I always hope no one hears it and dread if it happens in public or work.
I've watched a few different videos of African Americans with Tourette's giving their two cents and not one of them accused the guy of being racist. They also think it's weird he was sat so close to a microphone, almost as if BAFTA had hoped this would happen. This also wasn't filmed live, they had two hours to take it out...but they needed something to cover up the "Free Palestine" thing so they threw a handicapped man under the proverbial bus. Just adds an extra layer of cruelty to it all.
I saw two on TikTok who did and shared that there are plenty of racist people in the disabled community. You watched videos that confirmed your preexisting bias.
Can you source those videos please? Because I saw at least half a dozen content creators with Tourette’s who are black and all of them said the same thing- that this is involuntary- basically it’s no more an indication of him being racist than if he’d said nothing at all, or if he had sneezed. Every person with this form of Tourette’s who has slurs as some of their tics has also been in that position where they’re accused of meaning it or being a bad person when it’s just not the case. It’s hard to imagine that any of them would say otherwise.
Nobody else could get near this topic… not with the level of sophistication Josh brings and makes it look easy. He is the Simone Biles of the comedy world. Give him the gold 🥇
This feels premeditated; that many people with all those resources making excuses are either the most incompetent group to prevent that outburst, or deliberately put things in place to make it happen. Why? My first thought is a ratings boost; get it trending online knowing full well what would happen.
Josh Johnson again excels at criticising the real responsible names, BBC and BAFTA. After the SNL’s ableist sketch, Josh’s humour felt so refreshing and spot on! I’m so happy to be following his stand ups for a long time. I’d like to go to his Flower Tour once he comes to the UK again.💕🌸🌺🌼
It's also shame for delroy lindo and Michael b Jordan. Suddenly they have to deal with this incident and and the press off of it rather than enjoy the awards season.
The whole world have been bullying him, and saying the most hateful, ableist things. Demonising and othering disability and chronically ill. But that is apparently ok, as "racism trumps ablism" all the time. In their incitement to call out racism, they feel it's completely valid to be ableist. And USexceptionalism trumps all.
@EEmB Both things can absolutely be true. The people presenting were subjected to a demeaning word that is hurtful and often shouted to "keep black people in their place." Davidson was set up to fail and be vilified so the BAFTAs could get ratings. We do not need to diminish one to point out the other. BBC should be the very ones reaping the whirlwind for BOTH things - exactly what Josh was pointing out. Turn the heat of the sun of them, compliments of BOTH sides being angry.
Very valid points. Knowing in advance that it might happen AND not editing it out afterwards - is it possible that the BBC actually enjoyed the incident? Tim Davie must go home NOW (not stay until his scheduled leave next month)!
This piece was BRILLIANT -- GREAT JOB, Josh. The BBC and BAFTA were totally responsible for letting this go out over the air and STAY around for as long as it did.
Speaking as a neurodivergent individual, I've learned the MOST important thing you can do is mentally separate the condition from the person. John Davidson didn't say the n-word, _Tourette's_ said the n-word. This goes for every condition, big and small. Instead of "X is depressed," think "X is fighting depression." That distinction seems minor, but it's actually *VERY* important due to how human instincts work. As a species, we instinctively try to fulfill whatever roles we're assigned by others/ourselves, because in prehistoric times failing to fit into your pack meant dying alone. For folks with mental health conditions, this can mean the condition gets _baked into your identity_ in a way that makes it extremely hard to fight. If instead of thinking "oh no, Tourette's made me say the n-word," you think "oh no, *I* said the n-word," you turn the condition into a personal failing that becomes what you expect of yourself and what others expect of you.
Its rough. I would hate to be John Davidson. But he is a gentleman for apologizing and feeling bad. You know. This should have been a matter between those three men... and not a three ring circus.
I mean would say I done that but then found out at 38 I have autism and its like "oh that is why I felt like a wierdo my entire life trying to fake being normal..."
Davidson did reach out to Michel B Jordan and Delroy Lindo in private and apologized for the pain he caused them. If you know his story, you can see why he doesn't apologize in public for having Tourette. He still acknowledges that he hurt them even though it was not intentional or his fault. He knows both can be true - unfortunately the people attacking him now don't seem to understand that.
How many racists give awful ukelele apologies for spreading hate. He did everything he could. Its sort of like the living metaphor for systemic racism. Look out for the ND community. Life is rough without Medicaid cuts.
5:41 glad you mentioned the Beeb's censorship of Akinola Davies Jr's acceptance speech, but it would have been great if you referrenced him by name. not enough people are talking about him amidst this highlighting double standards of censorship.
A superb take on this. Thanks TDS and Josh. It also took away from the best actor award for Robert Amayo who played John in I Swear - which is a brilliant film.
They didn't bleep it. They cut out a whole long section of an ending of a speech, and the Free Palestine was the end of that speech. It's a big difference.
The BBC has for years been accused by the right and far-right of bias. They have been over compensating to appease their detractors to the point of absurdity. Think about what would offend Trump, "Free Palestine" or the n-word, that'll help you understand the BBC's response.
They edited out EVERY SINGLE ONE of his other tics except that one, and had a boom mic near him to pick up anything he said. He even did NOT want to go to the BAFTA awards but they assured him everything would be okay.
Most of us don't do that. I know, right now we have our Tangerine Baboon in office making us look like the greatest morons to walk the planet, but most of us are thoughtful and considerate of others. *sigh* I'd like to get back to that soon. :(
@Madamegato I don't know. I'm in a lot of progressive spaces and about half the hate I see is coming from political allies. I'm not going to lie, this has me really really angry at a lot of performative progressives and I'm less likely to advocate for causes that don't intersect with my own anymore.
in isolation the crux of the outburst issue is that not only are such tics involuntary, they can have nothing whatsoever to do with what the person suffering from tourette's thinks - AND ALSO NOT BE AN EXAMPLE OF THE LANGUAGE THAT THEY CHOOSE TO USE - be it in private, or even only inside their own head
I mean it's literally a reflection of what they know to be the worst possible thing to say in a given situation. It's probably the closest thing we have to a real old-timey magical curse.
The fact the BBC censored the "free Palestine" but not the n-word when they had a 2 HOURS delay is wild
Yup
They wanted people talking about it, so they didn't censor it. I think its for shallow and vapid reasons, and not to call attention to disabilities in general.
@SoulofWax Wow, what a cope. The point is that the word is offensive. It could have been bleeped.
@SoulofWaxor is it about whites getting to hear slurs against blacks
“How you gonna hand out editing awards …😆
They guide others to a treasure they cannot possess… editing
I was just bout to make the same comment 😂
That cracked me up! I laughed out loud and applauded.
Coming with the heat!!!!
BBC did the editing, not BAFTA
There's also the fact that John Davidson's other tics were censored from the broadcast. The n-word was basically the only one they left in
Definitely on purpose
Ahhh now i see.
One of them was also the n-word…
They missed it plain and simple. Obviously that is still a problem.
From what I read, the n-word got shouted again and censored, so when they were told about the n-word being shouted, they thought they got it already
Communist media or networks at its best.
Wow… he’s right. I really did NOT know how much of the blame the BBC and BAFTAs deserved.
It's crazy people are pointing fingers at the victims instead and not at BBC being amateurish.
@1Warrior4AllNot amateurish, they did it on purpose for controversy and ratings
Josh being insightful instead of inciteful.
👍
I'll be stealing that :).
That's Josh.
He always is. He is a Millennial with sage wisdom.
Wow that is so clever
I’ve been best mates with a strong Tourette’s sufferer for 40 years, since childhood. He will blurt out the N word, the C word and everything in between, and everyone who knows him knows that. And he’s dark skinned himself!!!
I would never sit him next to a microphone at such an event! Shame on the event organisers and editing team for not doing better, because it’s this poor guy that will cop so much abuse now
The BBC & BAFTA deliberately broadcast & streamed the word!
They need to be sued & punished for violating broadcasting standards!
The irony was that he was there because of a documentary about Tourette's. That won an award. I think it's not a well understood condition in the US.
@Donquity it's a movie based on his life, not a documentary
Geez Louise, all these (supposedly white) people making excuses for the extremely offensive and hurtful thing that Tourette’s guy blurted out. Like, he couldn’t have said “cauliflower” or “symbiosis” or “integument” or something? Sorry, I got a bit silly there. IMHO, there is no excuse for exclaiming the N word in public and then having someone else making a dumb, lame excuse for it afterward. Sheesh. And oh, by the way, I’m white.
Sorry, I forgot to add: Josh Johnson, you are excellent and brilliant! Thank you for being!
Bleeping "free Palestine" but not the n-word tells a lot about what is wrong with our world.
In the interest of truth, they didn't bleep Free Palestine, they cut the whole segment where that person was given an award. Arguably worse, imo
@Klonerism Ah yes, worse, I agree.
At least the tourette's is involuntary....
but apparently it is still “anti-semitic”to claim zionists control the media(!)
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
@nl5828well, yeah, it is.
Typical Josh Johnson: incisive, truthful, and wickedly cutting with the humour. Excellent. Just excellent.
Typical!
Nah. Typical 2010 humour by a guy that looks 12
They are basically trying to make this the will smith slap incident. That got everyone talking about the oscars.
You think they left it in deliberately for clicks? Thats pure evil.
The SHOW must go on as they say!
Yeah that was what I was thinking its a bit Streisand Effect or some sassy viral marketing...
"They didn't hear it..." and were still not aware after the on-stage apologies followed?
Exactly!
They didn't warn Michael B. Jordan or Delroy Lindo. You can tell by their shocked reaction. They didn't apologize to them after the fact, either. It's the usual racist bee ess. Boycotting BAFTA and the BBC forever.
They probably thought it was about the free palestine comment xD
It's not the only offensive thing he ticced, just the only one they didn't edit out
*Psst.* They're lying.
One of the smartest thing TDS ever did (besides getting Jon back on regularly) was to give Josh the anchor chair. If you haven't seen his standup, you are truly missing out!
He is incredible
I wish that was so. It appears they are considering Desi Lydic as the frontrunner for the anchor position.
He has a new set every week, it's incredibly consistent and impressive, along with always being hilarious but also profound
I have been a huge fan for a while. He’s constantly making new content every week and is easily one of the hardest working comedians out right now.
Every Tuesday evening at 9pm Eastern is Josh Day for me.
Exactly - why DID they seat him close to a microphone?
Probably an "ambience" mike, to pick up the audience laughing, applauding etc.
"How are you handing out editing awards if you cant edit" 😂😂 Josh is such a lovely addition to rhe Daily Show
I swear, TDS sees the stars coming and just makes sure to be involved in their careers before they blow up.
😎💯💚💚💙👍🌎
BBC did the editing, not BAFTA. BAFTA gave standing ovation to Palestine comment.
@raniemott5441SNL gave us a bunch of comedians who tend to play the same caricature in every movie they star in. TDS gives us people who feel genuine in every appearance they make. They are leagues apart at this point.
😮🫢😀😆😆
So, they humiliated the guy for nothing....
Welcome to England. They can be truly awful, especially to neurodivergent people.
@G12G4 It wasn't the english. It was US celebrities.
@Gabriel_H77 Jamie Foxx
No, not for nothing.
The BAFTAs have historically been anti-black and the BBC despises Scots, particularly working class Scots, with a passion: that Scots who know John’s story leapt to his defence and that people of colour who don’t understand Tourette’s or Coprolalia jumped to Michael and Delroy’s defence before everyone took a deep breath to realise both were slighted, is EXACTLY what they wanted
So, no, not for nothing but to keep the minorities down and at each other
@HumanBeanbagwhat!? What does Jamie Foxx have to do with any of this?
They set him next to a microphone and didn't bleep it out with 2 hours of lead time? Nah, this doesn't sound like incompetence, my man was set up. They're intentionally exploiting his tic for engagement rage-bait, plain and simple.
It's what happens when you have sensitivity to disabillity not knowing what to do when that disability causes shock to other groups perfectly entitled to be sensitive about racism. (The black people rose above, it in my view. They were perfect gentlemen. 👍)
And now it's headlines everywhere and put BAFTAs on the map. Yup, views = money
FWIW, the UK doesn't have the same beeping culture as the US. Rather we have more of a culture of doing stuff live with zero delay. Beeping started much earlier in the US.
Immediately! You take that back…it’s pure BAFTAMY I say, BAFTAMY!!!! 😮
Agreed 100%... Games people play. Making money at any cost.
A brilliant orator disguised as a comedian.
@slomoyolow
So I have gun tourettes so that makes it fine I go around shooting people because of my tick? 😂
@TheLastZeekasaurthat just makes you American
@TheLastZeekasaur what??? is this a joke or something
@omnicognatesnr5947 best way to troll a troll. Bravo and hats off🥳
' How can you give out editing awards? While you can't edit yourselves' 🎉❤
Love from Scotland. This is the best take on this I've heard.
The amount of black americans that have heard these same points from me, and roundly ignored them to bully a disabled man is astonishing.
Even when I mentioned the black american politician who tics the N word, they just said he was racist too.
Mind boggling hate coming from America, as is the norm, but this was not from fscsts.
@daftgowk1 brooooo stop this foolishness. Just like this Irish dude, me and many other people did not know the details until now. Stop that
Also it's actually insane you call black people one, homogenous thing. That's just gross
Josh's delivery is genius.
That but also some really off-the-wall jokes, like the Babe Ruth reference. This is not lazy writing
I don't know if The Daily Show ever intends to have a single host again, but if they do, it should definitely be Josh Johnson.
🎉🎉
@AllenKnutsonain't nothin' lazy about our Josh.
Jon Stewart handpicks amazing artists on this platform
You should give Blackbelt Barrister a watch on RUclips, he's pretty fiesty about BBC bullying
So he fears black people or he thinks black people are n******? Wunmi also got called the n-word by him. At what point do you realize you should leave? You are hurting people with your words?
@ADeina-tt7oh You have a little more reading to do before your assessments can be considered informed.
@ADeina-tt7oh "leading him to shout the things he fears *_SHOUTING_* "
I highly recommend the video by Sweet Anita on this situation.
She has verbal tics, but understands that those tics still have an impact on other people. And she''s biracial, it's heartbreaking to hear how she talks about the dynamic with her father.
The bit about her father was so sad to hear. I've been subscribed to her for years but I had no idea about that. She did a new video on the SNL tourettes skit
Yes, I'm sure John understands that, too.
Let's think about him for a minute and how bad he'll be feeling...
Pure incompetence by the BBC.
I just went to that video (having watched it first) and recommended this one.
just watched it. i mean, that just seems terrifying
Her race should have nothing to do with it. Her opinion on Tourette Syndrome isn't more valuable or more credible because she's more than one race. Stop trying to shoehorn race into literally EVERYTHING, you absolute buffoons.
So the BBC is responsible for the humiliation that dude went through.
And people online and celebrities. They have a part to play too. Yes the BBC aired it but doesnt mean you kick the guy while he is down
100%
Humans are self-healing. If he bought into turettes, it's bcus he wanted it. No sympathy no excuses
And the humiliation that Delroy and Michael went through too
obviously
2 hour delay and not censoring it is actually insane
Let me give you another one:
A black person walks into a room. There is a rap song playing they've never heard before and don't recognise the artist. The n-word blasts out during a verse. Is the black person offended?
Yeah, it's kinda the definition of a nuanced situation. Which of course the internet is great at. Ahem.
@jii. Simple they wanted the publicity. As far as the idiots running this were concerned there is no such thing as bad publicity.
Very difficult situation that the bbc fully created
I just cannot get over the irony of the fact that Davidson was there in the first place because a biopic about his life and his struggle with tourettes was nominated.
Warner Brothers hear it and they told the BBC to edit out the slur, but they didn't. Even if the BBC didn't hear it themselves, they were told by someone who did hear it and they did nothing about it!
It's not a slur if it's involuntary
They probably wanted the controversy honestly!
Wait is this true?? WB said to censor and they did not?
@LynneEverett what? its still a slur. its not RACIST if its involuntary but it is still a slur and shouldn't have been on TV
@LynneEverettthe fact that it is a preloaded word isn't involuntary.
7:02 yeah, they did this on purpose. No doubt. No question.
it was a mistake, there was nothing to be gained, get over it.
@DeniseRowntree-c3h interesting how Black folks are ALWAYS told to “get over it” …. nothing can be gotten over until the harm caused is genuinely addressed …..may you receive exactly what you deserve in Life 🤲🏾
@DeniseRowntree-c3h nothing except tons of free press, attention from entire world and a conveniently neuroD fall guy.
@samagramz The BAFTA Awards has been going since 1949 & it is a not-for-profit organization run on charitable contributions, so there is no UPSIDE for them in 'bad publicity' - not everything in life is engineered or a conspiracy, it was a mistake, end of, grow up...
@DeniseRowntree-c3h lol there's always that one 😂
Alan Cummings explanation was directed at all the slurs - including the homophobic slurs directed at him personally.
He also said that they placed microphones very closed to him for no reason
Oh they had a reason: the opportunity to broadcast the n-word to the world. Those BAFTA producers and the BBC knew what could happen and took a shot.
There was a reason
Did he though?
@_veikkomies It's in this video? Did you watch all 7 minutes😂
@nickwijker1990 No, it's not
😭They Sat him next to a MICROPHONE? 😂😂😂
BBC wanted this to happen!😂😂
For what possible reason...?
@DeniseRowntree-c3h Anything but Epstein
@DeniseRowntree-c3h now everyone is talking about the BAFTAs
@Den@DeniseRowntree-c3httle conspiracy theory I have here.
In the UK the BBC is very unpopular at the moment from both sides, right and left.
The right think they’re woke anti-British immigrants lovers (all the regular right wing cry points).
Many on the left see them as complicit in genocide.
So I think they basically micced him up so that if anything bad or embarrassing to them happened in the show (IE the winner shouting ‘free Palestine’) they’d broadcast something John said to drown out the controversy.
@tommurphy4770it’s like Patrick minford on steroids.
7:41, Burn after reading
There’s a distinct difference between giving someone a “free pass” vs acknowledging that someone should not be condemned for doing something legitimately beyond their control. The man has also experienced a lot of hate in his life, and especially those of us who are neurodivergent, would feel compelled to speak up, regardless of our skin colour.
This weekend’s SNL skit demonstrated that ignorance exists even where they should know better.
The BBC on the other-hand, they’re fair game.
I thought the SNL skit was awful. Yes, I got their point...but still....
One of the better takes I’ve seen about the whole situation.
yep lots of whiny takes with no insight, josh actually put some thought into it. respect
The point that upsets me is the people attacking the one suffering with Tourette's, and not the producers and those in charge of censoring
The internet is FULL of misinformation, and society's lack of mental health awareness is already a problem, so you can't blame folks if all they hear is "a man shouted the n-word at the BAFTAs."
Who you CAN blame are the producers who failed to censor it, and the media who made "N-WORD SHOUTED AT BAFTAS" their headlines, knowing full-well that most people would just see that and jump to conclusions.
@golden98097 Exactly. I'd want to be buried whole.
Bots posting and replying to bots. Lol!
Malicious incompetence on the part of BAFTA
6:23 FROM A TRUCK?! As in a local news team doing weather interview setup?
Slightly bigger but yes, an OB truck because the awards were not at a studio.
I really like Josh Johnson's style of soft delivery. It's very disarming and very funny.
6:41 it’s like s4 Ep10 of the boondocks…
The fact that they bleeped out Free Palestine but not the slur is absolutely bonkers
They didn't beep out Free Palestine. There was a full part of the speech he gave that was cut out, and he ended with Free Palestine. No bleeping. They cut out like a full minute or two.
@EEmBIdk if that makes it better
"Sorry if you were offended." is passive aggression 101.
This controversy covered the right way!!
Yesss Josh!! You've been doin some hilarious stand ups and love seeing you on the Daily Show, here for it all!
Saw Josh’s stand up a few months ago..he has been busy!!
@whoscaresevery Tuesday, a new set here
If I trust anyone to cover this in a competent and compassionate manner, it is Josh Johnson!
On the bright side it came from a man with Tourettes and not the sitting president!?
Sooo - progress?!
😁😳🥺
I've cancelled my tv license; they won't get money from me anymore...
...me to 😊
I feel for everyone directly impacted by this - and nothing but scorn for BAFTA and the BBC for allowing it to go through unedited.
I feel bad for the guy. BAFTA knew what they were doing when they sat him next to a mic
Actually, it was an effects mic to measure in-room dynamics and DIDN'T transmit the offensive word.
Off topic, cool Hildy profile pic!
@acme181169 Well, he was uncomfortable.
@acme181169 'well, actually'... Jonathan says he was uncomfortable. He warns the reporter on the red carpet. So let's believe he knows what happened most.
I know (of) someone who says whenever she gthe airport and security says 'hold still' her ticks start.
@musicneurons oh definitely, John didn't know that and I'm sure it added to his anxiety
I love Josh’s faces he makes. He’s not only funny but so completely adorable
Josh Johnson is perfect for this job
I love listening to you Josh. Late night, daily show, independent media keep me hopeful and saner.
O.........k.
I knew Josh would approach this with empathy for the marginalized and rage against systems. The kind of comedian we need more of right now, and I appreciate his kindness and advocacy for a better world!
Shame on BAFTA & BBC!
For what? Black people shout and sing that word, so they're clearly not offended by it.
Mate, there was absolutely nothing the bloke could’ve done.
6:49 as the people in between and a huge josh fan, RIGHT
Brillant Josh!!! Need more of Josh on The Daily Show!!! Love this guy!!!❤😂🎉
How are people just now finding about Tourettes? If you're not sure, then before you say something, do this: "Hey Google. Tell me about coprolalia."
@Mark-Haddow not the BBC. The BAFTAs.
That sounds like they absolutely chase ratings.@Mark-Haddow
The news service eaens money from TV lisncing
As fewer people have TVs, and don't pay that tax they absolutely need more engagement.
Spot on and funny a flawless JJ take, well done Josh!
Perfect. No notes!
MORE JOSH JOHNSON PLEASE AND THANK YOU
Never heard of the BAFTAs, but thanks to this incident, I discovered the excellent movie 'I Swear'. 👏👏👏
Spot on as always Josh Johnson ❤!
Nobody else could get near this topic… not with the level of sophistication Josh brings and makes it look easy. He is the Simone Biles of the comedy world. Give him the gold 🥇
A well thought out and rational take. How did this end up on the internet!?!
The BBC & BAFTA deliberately broadcast & streamed the word. They need to be sued & punished for violating broadcasting standards!
We always enjoy Josh Johnson’s humor and interviews!!
This feels premeditated; that many people with all those resources making excuses are either the most incompetent group to prevent that outburst, or deliberately put things in place to make it happen. Why? My first thought is a ratings boost; get it trending online knowing full well what would happen.
They had this movie about this guy up for awards and wanted tics to air. I can practically hear the producers rubbing their hands excitedly.
I think incompetence and error is much more likely before you go for the conspiracy theory
You obviously don't understand the BBC
The BBC had to deflect attention away from Andrew being arrested, somehow. This whole controversy has worked brilliantly, wouldn't you agree?
@eme.261like a war/"special military operation" in Iran to distract from the Epstein Files
This is like the British version of the will smith slap
Josh Johnson again excels at criticising the real responsible names, BBC and BAFTA. After the SNL’s ableist sketch, Josh’s humour felt so refreshing and spot on! I’m so happy to be following his stand ups for a long time. I’d like to go to his Flower Tour once he comes to the UK again.💕🌸🌺🌼
I honestly feel bad for John Davidson. Talk about mortifying. Shame on the baftas and BBC.
It's also shame for delroy lindo and Michael b Jordan. Suddenly they have to deal with this incident and and the press off of it rather than enjoy the awards season.
They have only been celebrated, while everyone else have been ableist and hateful. So no, they are not the victims here. The disabled community are.
@EEmByou fell for the exact 'racism vs ableism' mistake that Josh Johnson specifically called out in this exact video, that's sad
Well broken down Josh, nice work as always! BBC failed both parties in this situation!
@5:59 my fault for drinking at this moment, almost choked!
Tourette’s Awareness Month is May 15 to June 15. A demonstration outside the BBC headquarters would be cool
Instead of "X is depressed," think "X is fighting depression."
That distinction seems minor, but it's actually *VERY* important due to how human instincts work.
This is how I learn that Josh doesn't identify as neurodivergent? So then wearing the same hoodie to every show is _literally_ just a fashion choice?
I feel seen 👀
I’m sure he’ll figure it out someday 😆
We neurodivergents have considered him as part of the family for a while
I mean would say I done that but then found out at 38 I have autism and its like "oh that is why I felt like a wierdo my entire life trying to fake being normal..."
To the contrary, that was Josh acknowledging it (for the first time I've heard). It would always have been in a joke form.
Pretty sure he does the same hoodie and jeans thing as a branding and marketing strategy.
Josh Johnson. Nobody better out there. Hard to watch him without a hoodie, but it’s still Josh Johnson. The Daily Show was soooooo lucky to snag him.
2:10 as i'm holding my autograph Sean Schemmel (Goku english voice actor) card while contemplating on selling it hahahaha
It's the BBC and BAFTAs that tried to manufacture a viral moment at the people's expense. It's seriously pathetic.
This is the truth😕
That was a touching message Josh!
Bleeping Free Palestine is bad enough
They didn't bleep it. They cut out a whole long section of an ending of a speech, and the Free Palestine was the end of that speech. It's a big difference.
Also, it's mind boggling that these awards shows are still televised. Nobody watches this garbage.
You are the Guru of slow roast and cooking ! You are a sensation and a revelation! Keep up the heat sir!
I really appreciate this because it more or less explains the fault is with BBC for mistakes thAt led to that moment.
Saying they didn't notice is CRAZY. You aired that apology though?! What do you meant you didn't notice it?!
Because John had ticked a few times before and they were caught and edited out.
On a side note, learning that Josh likes anime is awesome, and makes sense as well.
The BBC has for years been accused by the right and far-right of bias. They have been over compensating to appease their detractors to the point of absurdity. Think about what would offend Trump, "Free Palestine" or the n-word, that'll help you understand the BBC's response.
100%. Ever since Boris tipped the scale and threatened defunding the BBC, BBC have been playing nice to the tories and especially Reform and farage.
Tone wise, aced it! It was a tricky one. Well done Josh.
They edited out EVERY SINGLE ONE of his other tics except that one, and had a boom mic near him to pick up anything he said. He even did NOT want to go to the BAFTA awards but they assured him everything would be okay.
It’s refreshing to see an American’s take on this not just be to bully a disabled person 😂.
Literally, a lot of people need to learn what "ego-dystonic" means
I mean it's literally a reflection of what they know to be the worst possible thing to say in a given situation. It's probably the closest thing we have to a real old-timey magical curse.
