    The fact the BBC censored the "free Palestine" but not the n-word when they had a 2 HOURS delay is wild

    • @SoulofWax
      @SoulofWax Month ago +35

      Perhaps they don’t want to censor medical anomalies as the person cannot control that. The whole point of the movie is to make Tourette’s accepted by society. Even when you call the queen a c*nt. On the other hand political statements are deliberate comments and don’t have a place in this show. Neither does a racial slur, but it is debatable when the person can’t control it. It maybe even shows how deeply rooted these racial comments are and we need a lot more education to eliminate these words in our vocabulary.

      They wanted people talking about it, so they didn't censor it. I think its for shallow and vapid reasons, and not to call attention to disabilities in general.

      But also we're adults and know what Tourette's? is, so why are we even talking about it? And no, you don't get to be offended by someone who said the N word when they have tourette's. @scepteredisle ok, this is the BAFTAs, nothing to do with maga.
      But honestly, if you just look at one of the few comments above yours, you will see that people do NOT understand what it is at all. They do not get that it is uncontrollable, that the person cannot control the language coming out of their mouth, and that is why it is a condition that limits possibilities for a lot of people, if the workplace is not a tolerant place.

Like, he couldn’t have said “cauliflower” or “symbiosis” or “integument” or something? Sorry, I got a bit silly there. IMHO, there is no excuse for exclaiming the N word in public and then having someone else making a dumb, lame excuse for it afterward. Sheesh. And oh, by the way, I’m white.

      @TheRealTrueCrimeAnalyst Month ago +43

      Thank you so much, Mr. Patrick Byrne 5070, for this helpful demonstration of how to use the word “nah”; let me add a little context for our readers. “Nah” is slang for “I appreciate your contribution to this dialogue. Here is mine.” So you see, even though it sounds completely dismissive of another person’s opinion, it actually celebrates it. We’re all just doing our best here, right? Keep up the great work everybody! P.S. - I’m interesting in what makes this humour typical 2010?

    • @davidbastow5629
      @davidbastow5629 Month ago +13

      @TheRealTrueCrimeAnalyst see this is why Aussies invented "yeah nah" so it can be more easily distinguished from the solo "nah".
      "Yeah nah" is slang for what you described (after removing the boundless sarcasm you were exercising). Whereas just "nah" is what @patrick clearly intended to convey as a bot, or a troll or probably both.

    • @Zzyzzyzzs
      @Zzyzzyzzs Month ago +5

      I think the microphone thing is a bit of a misdirected point. Davidson was yelling loud enough for the people on stage to clearly hear him. There's likely no way they could have sat him anywhere far enough from any mics not to pick it up.

    • @Steph6.0
      @Steph6.0 Month ago +9

      Because they wanted it to be heard. I've attended plenty of award shows & they could've sat him near the rear where his voice wouldn't have been picked up as clearly by the mic.

    • @7legspider
      @7legspider Month ago +15

      @Zzyzzyzzs the microphone thing is important bc it was right in front of him (he was sitting 40 rows back, btw) when they knew very well how his condition manifested. so even if there were verbal tics that didn't reach the stage, it could have been picked up and broadcast to people watching. its like they wanted something to happen.

      And in the UK, if you watch *any* live television (even if it's not the BBC), you *have* to pay for a "TV license", which goes to the BBC. I think it's roughly £140 ($200) per year.
      You can opt out, but if you do, they send you harassing letters hinting that they're going to send debt collectors to your house to check you don't have a TV. (Note: you don't have to have a license to *own* a TV, just if you use it to watch live TV. So if you only use it as a screen for a games console, tough. £1000 fine.)

    Response to this event has been very interesting to watch, because it requires empathy towards both John Davidson and also Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo, but also holding to contradicting opinions (person with Tourette’s cannot suppress their ticks and hearing slur directed towards you even when involuntary is very hurtful) at the same time.

      Imagine you suddenly sneeze, and someone in the room looks at you horrified and demands to know why you directed a sneeze at them.
      Let me give you another one:
      A black person walks into a room. There is a rap song playing they've never heard before and don't recognise the artist. The n-word blasts out during a verse. Is the black person offended?

      @Den@DeniseRowntree-c3httle conspiracy theory I have here.
      In the UK the BBC is very unpopular at the moment from both sides, right and left.
      The right think they’re woke anti-British immigrants lovers (all the regular right wing cry points).
      Many on the left see them as complicit in genocide.
      So I think they basically micced him up so that if anything bad or embarrassing to them happened in the show (IE the winner shouting ‘free Palestine’) they’d broadcast something John said to drown out the controversy.

    There’s a distinct difference between giving someone a “free pass” vs acknowledging that someone should not be condemned for doing something legitimately beyond their control. The man has also experienced a lot of hate in his life, and especially those of us who are neurodivergent, would feel compelled to speak up, regardless of our skin colour.
    This weekend’s SNL skit demonstrated that ignorance exists even where they should know better.
    The BBC on the other-hand, they’re fair game.

    • @Emileigggggh
      @Emileigggggh Month ago +58

      The SNL skit is genuinely so upsetting. I don't have Tourette's, but I have a lot of "invisible" conditions that people think I'm faking, and to spread the "haha but what if people were FAKING DISABILITY for PERKS" idea is such a dangerous narrative that was already out of control -- I work at a college that sends out news on higher ed, and there's been so many thinkpieces lately like "are colleges being TOO accommodating?!" and as someone who, my whole life, was vastly under-accommodated, it's been really hard to think of them being rolled back even further because of all this "the fakers could be anywhere" bs that so many in power are promoting right now.

    • @fastharri
      @fastharri Month ago +14

      @Emileiggggghit was incredibly insensitive, SNL didn’t think or didn’t care, either way it’s arguably worse than the BBC’s failure as it was deliberate over incompetence. And I’m sorry for your struggles, for what it’s worth I know what it’s like.

    • @susanmclare
      @susanmclare Month ago +22

      I agree. I think there’s a big difference between telling someone that they’re incorrect when they say that people with Tourette’s are using it as an excuse to be offensive, and giving someone a free pass.
      If John Davidson called someone a slur and he was actually calling them that slur, he wouldn’t get a free pass. Someone could have Tourette’s *and* be a racist, the two aren’t mutually exclusive. But this was a symptom of his condition. He also shouted out other slurs during this taping- homophobic ones specifically- but that hasn’t caused an issue because they were censored appropriately. The BBC beefed it big time. They must understand that some words go beyond the level of ‘offensive’ otherwise-neutral curse words, and they should have done way better.

Even Black people with that condition tried to explain and they were called out for 'defending a White man'. Who you CAN blame are the producers who failed to censor it, and the media who made "N-WORD SHOUTED AT BAFTAS" their headlines, knowing full-well that most people would just see that and jump to conclusions.

    • @Chan-zn7wb
      @Chan-zn7wb Month ago +17

      See, that's the thing if he truly didn't think it was a bad word to say, his tic could have manifested as something else. He excused himself due to to intense shame and embarrassment. These people don't care about logic, context or empathy and they just want their pound of flesh. They are the exact people that would carry torches and pitchforks, yet they lecture us about 'empathy', 'trauma' and 'recognising one's privilege'? F^cking LOL.

      @golden98097 Month ago +32

      @Chan-zn7wb Honestly an apology towards the actors was entirely deserved. Not for having tourettes, of course, but just for the hurt caused to them in the moment. Delroy Lindo was only 12-13 when segregation ended in America. So just because the intention to harm wasn’t there doesn’t mean the impact wasn’t there. Davidson did well though to apologise privately and then make statements. That’s how it should be, though people kept demanding public ones only. It was obviously mortifying for all parties involved.
      Michael B Jordan & Delroy Lindo were a class act however it’s upsetting that black people always have to be the understanding, patient ones, even in the face of abusive language. Ultimately, both parties were exploited by the BAFTAs. It’s terribly upsetting. It’s truly the BAFTAs and the people treating this as a binary situation when it’s full of so much more nuance that make this conversation so difficult to have.

All of which is obviously hurt by occurrences like this, meaning they're _very_ unlikely to deliberately court bad publicity to "go viral".
      (you know the BBC are a publicly funded public service broadcaster right ? So their continued existence - which recently is increasingly under threat - _literally_ depends on the goodwill of the UK populace and/or policymakers. For the BBC there _very much_ IS such a thing as bad publicity)

    I've watched a few different videos of African Americans with Tourette's giving their two cents and not one of them accused the guy of being racist. They also think it's weird he was sat so close to a microphone, almost as if BAFTA had hoped this would happen. This also wasn't filmed live, they had two hours to take it out...but they needed something to cover up the "Free Palestine" thing so they threw a handicapped man under the proverbial bus. Just adds an extra layer of cruelty to it all.

      Can you source those videos please? Because I saw at least half a dozen content creators with Tourette’s who are black and all of them said the same thing- that this is involuntary- basically it’s no more an indication of him being racist than if he’d said nothing at all, or if he had sneezed.
      Every person with this form of Tourette’s who has slurs as some of their tics has also been in that position where they’re accused of meaning it or being a bad person when it’s just not the case. It’s hard to imagine that any of them would say otherwise.

Why? My first thought is a ratings boost; get it trending online knowing full well what would happen.

      The whole world have been bullying him, and saying the most hateful, ableist things. Demonising and othering disability and chronically ill. @EEmB Both things can absolutely be true. The people presenting were subjected to a demeaning word that is hurtful and often shouted to "keep black people in their place." Davidson was set up to fail and be vilified so the BAFTAs could get ratings. We do not need to diminish one to point out the other. BBC should be the very ones reaping the whirlwind for BOTH things - exactly what Josh was pointing out. Turn the heat of the sun of them, compliments of BOTH sides being angry.

  • @PotatoPatatoVonSpudsworth

    Speaking as a neurodivergent individual, I've learned the MOST important thing you can do is mentally separate the condition from the person. John Davidson didn't say the n-word, _Tourette's_ said the n-word.
    This goes for every condition, big and small. Instead of "X is depressed," think "X is fighting depression."
    That distinction seems minor, but it's actually *VERY* important due to how human instincts work. As a species, we instinctively try to fulfill whatever roles we're assigned by others/ourselves, because in prehistoric times failing to fit into your pack meant dying alone. For folks with mental health conditions, this can mean the condition gets _baked into your identity_ in a way that makes it extremely hard to fight.
    If instead of thinking "oh no, Tourette's made me say the n-word," you think "oh no, *I* said the n-word," you turn the condition into a personal failing that becomes what you expect of yourself and what others expect of you.

    Davidson did reach out to Michel B Jordan and Delroy Lindo in private and apologized for the pain he caused them. If you know his story, you can see why he doesn't apologize in public for having Tourette. He still acknowledges that he hurt them even though it was not intentional or his fault. He knows both can be true - unfortunately the people attacking him now don't seem to understand that.
