      Curious...as I am also a proud owner of a Speedy Saphire sandwich and love it, however, when you say you "chose a Speedmaster over a Daytona", does that imply you actually had the opportunity to buy a Daytona?
      I can't honestly say that given the choice between the two I would have turned down purchasing a Daytona given the demand. That's a smart investment even if you prefer to wear a Speedy over a Daytona. Especially since you could have sold the Daytona at a massive profit, and then got a Speedy out of it :)
      All in all, I love the Speedy, but facing facts, I'm still on a Daytona waiting list for a call that (let's not kid ourselves) will never come.

In the same breath, i for one believe, if Daytona is sold at the same price tag as Speed master, it wouldn't have the craze it has today. If available readily, i am 100% certain, every watch enthusiast will have both in their collection. I think the craze is what making Rolex purposefully delay direct sales but watch and get thrills on the grey market. Who wouldn't like their products sell @ 200% of the retail? It's a dangerous game though.....especially when there are far better movements & complicated watches available (If investment is not ones top priority). That said, i have 2 Omegas , on waiting list for Daytona @ 6 ADs but i also know that i am never getting one from an AD.....I bought a Date just II and a OP 39 with the money i am saving for Daytona...To add more variety rather than waiting from my grave, i decide to treat myself with a JLC Master Geographic in couple of months for my birthday. 986C, that’s absolutely not true. I already own a modern Rolex Submariner and I could get either one of those watches. If I was in the market for a chronograph watch, I would choose the Speedmaster. The Speedmaster has way more legibility, the Daytona’s hour/minute hands and sub dial hands are very poorly designed and the legibility is terrible. When I glance down at my watch, I want to recognize the time immediately, not examine it. Furthermore, legibility is one of the reasons why I have a Submariner ... and the fact that they go a step further by implementing the Mercedes hour hand to easily distinguish between the hour and minute hands at a glance. The contrast is excellent too on both the Submariner and Speedmaster.

    Great points, great video! I'm a doctor, and I just bought the Speedmaster to be my "ER/on call watch". Even though the Hesalite crystal may scratch easier, you can polish it easier than sapphire, which you might have to end up replacing completely. Plus, a NATO strap makes it a bit more utilitarian and flexible in my mind. I think it's the better choice as a "work" watch between the two!

    The fact that it was close is exactly why I love omega. This watch is basically unchanged since it went to the moon and it can compete with what Rolex is putting out now. A better comparison might be the Rolex to the speedy racing. Can’t really see Rolex competing with a modern omega on any level except for gravitas and design (in terms of ‘iconicness’ as the design hasn’t changed!).

  • @pityipalko

    I definitely prefer the Speedmaster. I need a watch to be able to tell the time easily and quickly in any light conditions. I've had a Speedmaster for 12 years now and it's legibility among chronograph wristwatches is just unbeatable. It is clear and simple, it has a high contrast, great lume so that I can read it in the night as well. When I send it in for maintenance I miss it really badly. I also abused the watch a lot, it has been my sports watch for road cycling and mountain biking, hiking, trekking and it has held up great. Rolexes never really appealed to me, I just don't like their design, the shapes of the hands, the shapes of the markings. If I really had to choose a Rolex, because no other brand and design of watches were available, I would still not choose the Daytona, but one of their most simple designs, like the Explorer or Oyster Perpetual, because of their simplicity, or maybe a Milgauss.

    Seeing how you can't just go into an AD and purchase a Daytona I go with the Omega. I am a Rolex guy but they are getting ridiculous with regard to the lack of supply. It does not pay for an AD to sell to a normal customer when an AD can sell a Daytona to a grey market dealer for way more over retail then they would charge a walk in customer or a customer they have a long relationship with. Not saturating the market is a good thing but Rolex has gone too far in my opinion.

    • @lettuce1305
      @lettuce1305 5 лет назад +3

      I've been hearing rumors that some sales reps at ADs receive kickbacks for selling Daytona, Hulk, GMT Pepsi and Batman to grey market and second hand dealers. That's how they're able to control the market and prices. Ordinary folks who are not VIP customers will then have to wait forever or pay over 20k to the grey/secondary market dealers.

    For me, this is an impossible choice. Why? Well, as a value proposition - Rolex simply cannot win, no matter the investment value and such crap. It is overrated, overpriced, overhyped etc... On the other hand, as a longtime (former) Speedy owner, I can say it with ease - Rolex is significantly better watch in every possible way - its movement is newer, well proven, automatic and more accurate (plus with hacking), it has a superior water resistance, it is all-around tougher and much better proportioned (I found that Moonwatch wears unnecessary large because of the protruding endlinks of the bracelet), it has a sapphire crystal (that feature alone would make it a winner in my book) and the build quality is simply on a higher level. That being said, the money difference is of such magnitude that Omega presents much better value albeit being obviously inferior watch. If the Rolex was priced in the 5000-8000$ range (and that is probably what it SHOULD be priced, considering the competition) it would be a winner without a sweat. But, being priced as it is now, plus ridiculous waiting lists and stuff...the winner must be Omega Speedy Pro, not because it is a better watch (it is not, not even close), but because it is fairly priced, well-designed and historically important timepiece from the established manufacture.

    Both watches are nice, but the Omega is better value and certainly easier to obtain without getting gouged.
    A big negative with the Omega is that there are so many diffferent versions of the Speedmaster that does a wonderful job of confusing the potential buyer.

    Never thought of myself as having a brand preference, but I seem to be drawn to Omega. It started when my dad willed me his presentation DeVille from 1976. I now own a dress version and a 41mm Seamaster. To complete this phase of my collection I've been looking at a dressy sports watch, or a sporty dress watch. For me it always seems to come back to the Speedmaster. There's the history of course but the value/price ratio is just insane with Rolex. Rolex is a better brand, but are they a better watch? I say no. Right now my choice is between a "First in Space" and a Moonwatch in Hesalite.

      Kevork Nourian no brainer. The quality of rolex is evident if you are lucky to be able to hold both in hand. Anyone thinking the speedy is anywhere near the same quality has never been able to compare objectively. I’d never buy omega. Always rolex for anything under $15k retail

    The Rolex is a better watch. For the price, it sure as hell ought to be. But I still think 40mm is too small for a chronograph. If I'm actually going to use the stopwatch, I'll take the incredible, 46mm, Sinn EZM-10 over either of these.

    The Rolex is too expensive to comfortably wear for me. Hitting my watch against the doorknob would be like putting a dent in my car. The Omega however, for 3-4k secondhand you can wear without worry and bash around and has more of an old-school rough and tumble style to it. The advantage of designs like that is that they still look good when you beat them up a bit. Where a beaten up Daytona just looks like a damaged watch.

    Great review and summary. However it's to some extent comparing apples with oranges. The Rolex costs FAR more at the end of the day, though the physical build costs are most likely pretty comparable. The marketing is the difference.
    Was Neil wearing a Rolex on the MOON? - No. Did the Rolex pass space environment testing and prove itself in space on multiple occasions No. The speedy is a pure classic it even looks Apollo!. - However both are great watches. Personally I went for a Speedmaster with Sapphire glass, and exhibition back, best of both worlds.
    Raw posing power or pure class. The speedy for the class, the Rolex is for flashing around..

    This is a difficult one! The Rolex very luxurious, it just oozes quality! The Omega more workman like, but it’s a legend and I’m interested in space travel and astronomy. I’m also a car enthusiast, classical and new. Even though motor racing, funnily enough never really interested me. Still I can’t choose here...I’d have both! 🙂

    Tim, I suspect the Trip-lock of Daytona and GMT is identical to the Submariner and Rolex hides this fact, instead just claiming 100 meters for marketing reasons? Has any one ever investigated this when taking apart the watches?

    • @karlomcastro
      @karlomcastro 5 лет назад +1

      The triplock crown is the same for the Sub and the Daytona (& GMT among others). However, the Sub has a much thicker caseback that's why it is rated at 300m compared to the 100m rating of the Daytona. Hope that helps. Cheers!

    I prefer the Moon watch. It’s more of a youthful watch even for a youthful 40something man. It’s the right price for everyday use. It’s proven, been to the moon, NASA preferred. It looks great on any strap. I don’t like the bracelet on it. Rolex makes way better bracelets. The Speedmaster bracelets from the early 70’s match the case better and look timeless. These modern Omega bracelets look dated and belong in 1995. The Daytona as bad ass as it is. It became more of a statement watch due to the hype. It’s no longer thought of a tool/racing watch even though it has a racing heritage. The Daytona does not look good in a strap. Maybe if it was a smaller morevintage size case, then yes. For me I wouldn’t wear it much which is sad because of what it’s worth. Too pricey to wear and tear. If theDaytona was as common as a Submariner and it was priced accordingly ($8-$10k)? Yes, for me I would rock it daily. Still no wrong choice either watch. I’d get both. I’m a Speedy owner and a Date Just guy. If I could find a Daytona at retail I would definitely buy. I won’t buy at double the price.

      It’s a watch that hasn’t changed much. It looks vintage yet the design is timeless. For a Chronograph it’s very versatile. Any strap looks good on it. It’s not a homage to anything, plus it’s NASA preferred. Sure it’s not a Daytona (better bracelet, better power reserve, automatic, value retention, also an icon) but, for $3-$5k you get more bang for buck. Plus suited for everyday use, it could be a beater or a safe queen.
