Congrats! That is a really clean install! $1500 car was great to begin with! I am a bit surprised how good it looks cosmetically but sedans hold up better than coupes. My swap is complete and I am simply working out the growing pains for track duty. So far so good. The biggest worry I had was oil temps. They are high on track in the pan but after the cooler they are fine if you are running really good oil. I am using an analog gauge to get those. I also run no thermostat in the car, just a failure point.
Some great info , S54 is a fun more powerful motor , high revving and fits the character of the car. I weighed my e36 with S52 at the time on corner scales and it was ~3150 pounds ( NO AC compressor and little gas ) I have seen a few e30's or even e30 M3 with that engine swap and they move. Doing the swap in California requires some extra effort with emissions and cluster wiring.
you need to get yourself some sedan poverty specs ones. mine is 2600lbs empty on the papers maybe 2750lbs full. 4 cylinder, no sunroof, no electric windows in rear, no traction control, no A/C.... it weighs 60kg more than my e30. even once i swap and cage it should be around 2500lbs after weight reduction
Any worthwhile turbo build that will be reliable and make over 350hp will be around 10k. S54 may be close but at the end of the day its still stock, turbo is a fair bit more complicated
You don’t go S54 for power numbers. I don’t care if a turbo setup can make 2x as much power as an S54. It won’t feel as special. Nothing beats the induction sound at 8000rpm.
Justas paid peanuts for the s54 and harness. Last i seen him he was discussing ways to fabricate a inake inlet for the issue described. Nice video, and cmon the s52 isn't all too bad, i still have fun :)
I owned an S52 and S50B32 BMW Z3M. The difference is insane and if the E36 M3 Euro had a better diff ratio, I reckon it would murder the USDM M3 further. S50B32 vs S54 though, the tuning potential on the S54 is insane.

Engine bay looks stock. I'm working on my E36 M3 interior, trying to keep it as original as possible. It's not all about 0-60. Handling,engine noise better then s a radio.
S54 are getting soo expansive these days. Cammed S52 with full bolt on isn’t that far. Sure it’s not the same but I’ve seen s52 at 300 whp with 290/290 cams!
doubt it. I have had both engines in my M3. S52 was full bolt on, the S54 has CSL box and MAP tune. The s54 is 100% a different beast its waaaay waaaaay faster after you go above 5000RPM.
S54 is definately not worth it. why? too expensive, secondly 328i has litte differences, you buy one cheaply. slam turbo on it amd feel the difference !

My buddies e36 turbo coupe weighed in at 3090. Fiberglass overfenders, so that makes sense!

s54 is cool but I think most people are doing turbo m50's because how cheap it is to make better power

E46 or even E90. If you don’t mind going older, an E36 isn’t bad. Just know what you’re looking for and get the lowest KM from your options
