    My 1990 300 with the 5 spd M5oD has no problems cruising the turnpike at 75 (around 26-2800 rpms). Not much ooomff after 60 is for passing but it drives great and I love it

      I am still blow away by the 300. Skinny little engine can put in that work. Feels like it kinda brakes the laws of physics'

    "only" 150 hp, but 265lb ft, and torque is what matters when it comes to acceleration. I'm about to buy one of these myself, a 1995 extended cab longbed with the 300 and the five speed stick.
    The venerable Volvo 240, another simple and utilitarian old vehicle that ain't a race car but will do modern traffic just fine, is a personal favorite of mine, so I think this will be right up my alley.

      I use mine for a daily driver. Out of all the light trucks I have gone through, It's my favorite. Also use it for chores and trail rides. Hopefully you will like yours too.

      @@tradesman91 I suspect I will, old vehicles like these are definitely my type. It will only tie for the newest vehicle I've ever owned, which happens to be the inspiration for my RUclips handle.
      It doesn't hurt that my childhood best friends' father had an '87 in identical configuration, which my own father often borrowed when he needed a truck for a day. So it's a big time nostalgia thing, too.

      @@lt1caprice57l I feel ya there. I'm an early 90s baby. So these trucks make me think of the them days.

    The misconception about not keeping up in traffic comes from how so many of these trucks especially bullnoses got transmissions without overdrive.It's not so much the engine but what transmission. A 300 inline with an NP435 maxes out at about 120 and thats still pushing it really you dont want to do more than 100 to 110 for how many RPM you turn at 1:1. Any of these trucks with a zf5 M5oD or an overdrive kit on one of the 1:1 transmissions can keep up fine.

      That alot of good to know stuff. I give up on automatic transmission, when looking for a work truck. The manuals are just so cheap and simple and there no guessing game when problems arise. When running these trucks hard is anywhere between 65-75mph, and I shouldn't say hard because I suspect these engine when not loaded heavy, like the higher RPMs. I don't think these trucks should go 100mph with out alot of work. Like a speedometer that shows the speed, appropriate wheels and tires, and especially breaks. These trucks are some of the most dangerous when emergency breaking.

      Clutch slip maybe, I essentially have the same truck and I cruise at 80 mph and overtake occasionally at 90 mph, with the engine maybe hitting 2800 rpm when doing the 90 mph overtaking.

    my '96 with the 4.9 is much happier at 55 on the backroads, the '94 5.0 i had was better on the interstate and wasnt struggling to hold 70, both automatic overdrives

    Whats the D speed on a manual trasmission?

    • @asociallydisturbedskeleton6520
      @asociallydisturbedskeleton6520 Месяц назад +1

      The ‘d’ stands for Overdrive, usually the top gear in alot of old 4 speed gearboxes.

      Drive, and L if you see it Low. Not sure why a car company that started in 1920s would do that in the 1990s when everyone was fine with the simple 12345. The L1234 and 1234D is the same thing as the 12345 as far as I know. I guess the L makes ppl think its a pulling low gear and D as an higher speed drive gear. Referring to 9th Gen Ford F Series
