    I recently saw the F-22 demo team at the fort Lauderdale Air show, it was the most unbelievable display of military airmanship I've ever seen in my life. So inspiring. It's impossible for me to even consider that they could improve on something like the F-22 with the ngad. Although I am sure that people in the 40's thought the very same of the p51

    • @zyoungson215

      NGAD sounds like a different concept altogether. I hope they don't forget about the dogfight.

    • @7gmeister
      @7gmeister Год назад +1

      Those demonstrations don’t really show real world capabilities but the F-22 is extremely hard to be in a dogfight.
      The problem is that it’s getting more and more rare for fighters to enter into the merge and have an actual dogfight because seeking and tracking technology is so good that in order for two planes to get within 10 miles of each other they both are extremely likely to die.
      What they say is that a lot had to go wrong for two fighters to enter into the merge.
      That being said, they made an NGAD mod for DCS and it did to the F-22 what the F-22 does to other fighters and the physics weren’t out of this world or anything but can the US improve on the technology?
      Who knows but their main focus is beyond visual range. Not dogfighting

      I finally got to see an F-22 doing Raptor stuff last year at the Cold Lake, Alberta Airshow. It is absolutely amazing what that plane can do. Up until then, I had only ever seen an MXR do a backflip or a tail slide in flight, and that's a tiny stunt plane. The aerial feats that the F-22 is capable of is absolutely mind blowing for such a large aircraft. I'm accustomed to legacy Hornets doing some pretty wild maneuvers at air shows (min radius turns, high alpha, pirouettes), but that Raptor is truly in a class of its own with how it can just flip itself around at will and then keep going like it was flying straight and level the entire time.

      @HalIOfFamer Год назад

      Not an expert myself but many of them claim 6th gen will be more of a hub to coordinate drones. So it might not even perform much better than what we have today. Hopefully it's not the case, I know militaries Will do what they always did and pick the seemingly best option but I hope we don't abandon jet fighters in favor of drones.

    • @madarius76
      @madarius76 Год назад +1

      I'm expecting 6th gen to be super stealth due to RAS (radar absorbing structure) composites used for construction with it being the logical next step. I expect reasons including increased radar range and coverage for linking to drones, ease of connecting to developing spaced based tracking/detection /targeting systems, further enhance benefits of stealth, better kinematics for missile launch extending current munitions range, that'll they will operate at the altitude/speed of the yf12/sr71 taking advantage of variable bypass engines.

    • @Blu0tuth0ninja
      @Blu0tuth0ninja Год назад +1

      It's possible, but given that the missile is carried internally and partially under the body of the jet, it may not be that great of an asset. Lock on after launch would be much more useable. Let's not forget the raptor is extremely maneuverable, meaning that even without HOBS, it's likely to get a lock on solution before the enemy, while being in a better kinematic position.

    • @madarius76
      @madarius76 Год назад

      Making use of HOBS requires LOAL for a heat seeker (outside being cued by HMS or das eg f35) to begin with even wing mounted doesn't it? as targets outside the seekers field of view would need it anyway.

    • @Blu0tuth0ninja
      @Blu0tuth0ninja Год назад +1

      @@madarius76 Negative. HOBS is a capability of the missile based off of its seeker-head's max angle. The 9x has a reported max angle of about 80-90 degrees. In fact, the primary use of the hmcs with heat seekers is to directly control the seeker head of the missile to gain a lock before launch. The pilots and their helmets have a fairly restricted ability to turn their head without turning their shoulders, which makes controlling their plane difficult. And the radar's gimbal is even narrower. So without a visual lock or a radar lock, the heat seeker has no idea what its looking for.

    • @specrtre
      @specrtre Год назад +1

      @@Blu0tuth0ninja couldn't the helmet feed data to the seeker in the bay? To pre load where it's going to fly before leaving the bay realistically? I don't know though. I'm definitely not knowledgeable in the subject.

      HMCS, IRST/EOTS, DAS, etc are all planned for the F-22, the question is when those will be integrated because those have been planned for a long time but have always been postponed
      from Lockheed standpoint the F-35is a lot more profitable for them - cheaper to make - so they always ask for too much money
      when talk about relaunching F-22 begun (2019~2020) they asked Lockheed, they obviously said it would cost too much because they simply do not want to build more
      NOTE: the reason is that when they were given the contract they signed on a target price-per-unit, they cannot escape that clause, which means that the profit margin was "only" enough for the CEOs to be able to afford 1 mega-yacht instead of 2

    In a Beyond Visual Range or BVR engagement, when a fighter is defending he goes cold.
    What that means is that he turns to fly at a 90 degree angle to his bandit to trick radar guided missiles and make him difficult to track by them but they call it going cold because in that position you go blind as well and lose track of where your bandit is and you have to turn back towards the bandit and not only find him on radar but you have to be able to track and lock him.
    The radar dish classically has to be able to point in the direction of your bandit.
    This new radar means that the F-35 will be able to at least keep track of where his bandit is at ALL times.
    When you get defensive in a BVR fight having situational awareness while defending is extremely important because if they are able to push you by keeping you on the defensive they control the engagement but if you are able to keep track of them and get a lock before you recommit to the fight you could even conceivably fire back while still being in a defensive posture.
    When the new missiles they’re developing become available the US will have a huge advantage in aerial combat because they will be able to carry twice as many missiles and have much greater range giving them a huge edge in the fight

      I was under the impression that the above maneuver is called 'Notching' or 'Beaming' going cold is flying directly away from an opponent in order to increase the distance the missile has to travel but is only used when outside of the mimimum disengage zone otherwise you guarantee yourself death.

    Utilizing GaN chips in the new radar will also boost power efficiency in a HUGE way over GaAs...so it will be more capable AND use less power. This will reduce stress on the engine and electrical generation systems, and will help everything perform much better. Even if the AN/APG-85's ONLY upgrade was switching from GaAs to GaNs, this would still be a huge improvement...but I'm sure it will come with many more upgrades as well on top of that!

  • @Pincer88

    Maybe - and it's just a thought - the F-22's cockpit canopy might have room for a simplified helmet mounted missile cueing system, while flight data such as course, altitude, speed etc. being called via an audio system instead of visually. I've heard an F-35 pilot say that the data in his visor at times was too much and that in flight his eyes were tring very rapidly from focusing inside the visor and then back out again, etc., etc. also at times changing his depth perception. Maybe voice overs in the cockpit can help reduce the congestion of data displayed while enabling a somewhat simpler helmet design than say JHMCS. Since the F-22 does not have a distributed aperture like the F-35, it might give F-22 pilots a little bit of extra edge in air-air without having to implement and integrate complex equipement.

    8:35 actually let's me honest with no BS. Though the F-35 is indeed a monstruous machine... the main reason why it's expected to be so largely produced, is due to USA's geopolitical influence. It's basically being used as a political weapon similar to how dollars have been used. Not demeriting the jet in any way... but some buyers have only really chosen it because of said influence.
    The price itself is a cleaver tactic. People on the net saying how marvelous the F-35 is because it costs less than an F-16V. But the real thing is, Lockheed is heavily financed my the government and receives tones of subsidies, they can then sell the Lightnig II way bellow it's profitable price since the extra cash is provided directly by the government, in exchange the government gets more clients which will be fully reliant and dependent on the USA. It's all a huge political game really.
