  • This week on the homestead, we start a big job that's going to drastically improve our day to day life...fencing the entire farm! It's a mammoth task so it's going to take us a few weeks to complete, but in this video we started with the worst & most difficult area of the property.
As well as starting our farm fencing, we also planted our new strawberry plants & Victoria pressed some spring flowers for future craft projects.
Please LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoy it & SUBSCRIBE if you want to follow our journey as we bring this farm back to life! Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊
    Ricky & Victoria x
    -------------
We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

on a canvas. And Victoria, you are so talented to be able to create wilting flowers into pressed portraits. Also, what Harriet and i like about both of you is your sense of humor. Have you considered growing melons, such as cantaloupe or honey dew because they do so well in hot weather. Also zucchini and cucumbers.

When working around brambles wear rose handlers gloves that reach nearly to your elbows. Underneath wear metal handlers gloves -- the thin kind that stop metal splinters. Burn cuttings from brambles because they can root from a small piece that drop on the ground.

The stripped straight olive branches can be woven into a fence that is excellent for keeping chickens contained or around your garden plot to keep chickens out. Not difficult to do with fresh cut. Know you have lots of other projects to occupy your time, but since this is the first trimming they likey are the longest branches that you will be removing from the trees

That is a lot of olive trees. We only had 20 odd that we planted ourselves 20 years ago so still maturing but we were still self-sufficient in oil in a good year. Hard work picking, but nothing better than taking the results of 3 or 4 long days effort to the mill and then sampling your own oil at the start of a well-earned dinner out.
Learn how to sharpen your saw - it's not that difficult, doesn't take long and makes a huge difference. I just used a file, but there are gadgets that help get the angles right. Where we lived in Liguria there were lots of places where you could get the chain sharpened and the saw serviced which is also worth doing occasionally.

Hi guys - just FYI.. strawberries are self fertile and so need little or no help pollinating! If your greenhouse vents/ doors are open then plenty of insects will find their way in..but you can help by shaking the pots when the pollen is around(warmer times of day) or running you fingers over the plants to shake out the pollen. Strawbs have been grown under glass to get an early crop since early Victorian times- at least ..!

That dirt in the trunk cavity is best for pot planting. You must just watch out for scorpions while removing the dirt.

I am trying to tame an overgrown property on my own and I'm in my late 50s so I can totally relate. Hard work but very satisfying. The fence line looks great. You might have to spray any bramble suckers that come up or you will eventually be back to square one and you don't want that. They take a while to kill off completely. Can't you get a local farmer or contractor to come in with a post ramer on his tractor to ram all the posts in for you? That doesn't usually cost to much.

Well done on all that work clearing the boundary. Teddy didn't seem particularly impressed with the ball.

The strawberries will produce in the pots that you planted them in , but my advice is to to plant them in rows with ample space between the distance between each plant both in line and across from each row, if you have more rows. The reason the space is necessary is strawberries create runners, and by alternating the rows into the new growth keeps the stawberries plants new each season and continues vital plants . I think you get the idea, of how to make sure your plants do well and they produce a lot of strawberries for years.

The main function of mulch is to dress the soil and keep it from burning (drying) out.

It would still be recommended to use concrete for the posts. You can buy bags of pre-mixed concrete and prepare it easily in a large bucket using a drill mixing bit.

Hey I watch you guys on another account on my tv. I spent a good few years clearing Lantana which is a bramble-ish pest in Australia. Welding gloves! They are heavy leather and long. Cheap from Kmart.. They would wear out but before that very protective from prickly plants.

    Ricky, with regard to pronunciation:
Just type the word into Google Translate, then, below the word, click on the picture of a speaker.
Like magic, a hidden person will say the word.
I imagine you type in Portuguese words when you're struggling at the shops and maybe didn't think to try it for English words.
(Auger is pronounced like awful) ☺
