i love this interview soo much because it shows that besides being one of the greatest(my personal favorite) pianists of the last century he was a very deep thinker and had acquired true wisdom. my father(who is not a musician but had the fortune of seeing rubinstein in recital) told me this is the greatest interview he has ever seen. hopefully others will enjoy it too. ty filippeo
Besides being one of the greatest pianists,,,,,what a wise man! So true that no one is THE best,,,,just different. How amusing to see the thousands of "opinions" of the "experts" on Your Tube "pontificating" as to who is THE BEST in every field. What a great pleasure to see and hear this giant of the keyboard. Many thanks for posting,,and Best Wishes.
What a great musician and pianist ! At this artistic and pianistic high level, impossible and useless to compare such pianists between them. Everyone of them gave his own reading and performance !
Rubinstein is amazing... People look up pianists on youtube and hear them perform 10 or 12 pieces and make a determination on whether or not they were good pianists. Rubinstein played for... well at least 70 years. He retired at 89. No one here can honestly say they are familiar with all interpretations of all the music he played. He was respected by his peers as more than an equal. Just read what Joseph Lhevinne has to say about him. And Lhevinne was concert pianist quality.
Great video with a lot of history. Is that Robert McNeil, the interviewer? He looks so young in the video. I figure it must be some time in the mid 1970's.
At least to me, rubinstein's playing makes many others seem stale, I started searching him up on youtube after I heard one of his recordings, and I didn't hear much about him beforehand.
I'm polish and I think the closest translation would be: I will not give up because of this! (for example: war, something evil happening etc.). I think it's an idiom, so you can't translate it word for word. About the spelling, "Nie dam się" is correct.
no, I don´t think that only pianists can say there opinion, but if they do I believe they (we) will have more arguments to do it. The audience can say something about there preferences, if they like it more or less, but not about especific things of performing in music.
I believe that the back story behind his motto is that early in his life, after a couple of devastating events, he tried to commit suicide by hanging himself with his own belt. The belt broke and hence, Nie dam sie.
What's his exact motto? The translation is way off, I don't think nay is even really a word in polish, or at least not related. nie dam sie, mentioned before in the comments doesn't seem to translate at least according to google. Does anyone know how to speak Polish?
argument and talk, is the only thing i said, but maybe you don´t have it anymore.. and take it easy child, in this forum anybody can said anything elsewhere, you ever can open your mouth...
the medio`s manipulation is in many aspects but I don`t think in this; could happen a good pianist not been famous but in general famous ones are. Better than you or me sure he is...
Rubenstein's recording are all poor and I doubt his live playing is any better. He is the most over rated pianist of all time. I don't hear what so many others claim of the man..

i luv you rubinstein . i look up to you and when i touch the keys i always try to be like you .
But Rubinstein has made it clear that no one should be like him. ;-)
A True musician.
when u play piano u live to 90 without problem
He loved city of Łódź above all others.
I love his accent. :)

Dokladnie.

Rubinstein was great but for me my all time fav must be Horowitz that guy was just really good
thanks!
Horowitz had the looks, Rubenstein had the talent.
The Courtwick that is a little mean. But Rubenstein really was a great pianist.
The Courtwick - They both had great talent.

In the list of things he has a 'prodigious appetite' for they forgot WOMEN! Ruberstein was an infamous ladies man.
Literal - I noticed that, too. Expurgated for television.
@sinancans
he reitred at 89 because his eyesight has deteriorated a lot...
@DoctorD47 no he died back in 1982 at the age of 95
alguien me puede mandar la traduccion al español? gracias
Who is interviewing Rubinstein?
could you be more especific?
why do you say that?
do you say that so many people think the oposite just for coincidence?
@vierdiez Nope., horowitz was by a long shot.

It's something like I won't give up.
@@Bogna1 Thanks, 14 years later but still a Rubinstein fan.

Fred MyOpinion shut up. Look him himself said he’s not the best for gods sake! Calm down man
It’s because he evokes what seems the to be the spirit of Chopin. Most people agree he was not the most technically gifted pianist.
@@durelldarcey6639 that's just bullshit. His technique was very, very great.
