Thank you! Next time I am up north I am going to try and find a few white admirals to film. The red spotted purples have been numerous here this fall in Kentucky.
I’ve got a male cottonwood in my yard. (Huge!) And every year they lay eggs and hatch larva in that tree. The red spotted purples are here all summer. They love wet gravel spots.
We have them all summer here in KY too, but they peak in the fall. I have seen a ton of them the last couple of weeks. They love our gravel driveway after it rains.
Just had a shock. First time in the 37 years I’ve lived here I just got a pic of a white admiral. According to the Wisconsin butterfly site, they aren’t supposed to be here.

I knew the red spotted purple was a pipevine swallowtail mimic but I had no idea about their lifelong fascination with poop 😂
They are a strange but awesome butterfly!
Just found this channel and it’s awesome!
Thank you!
Yes good clip; we have been submitting some White Admirals for genetics from Manitoba

@@BackyardEcology Same here!
Yes! I’ve had to water my garden and each time the gravel path gets wet from the sprinklers these guys show up.

So cool! From what I have read about them they can be found in the northern tier states, but they aren't always common. Nice find!
Found this critter in South Carolina
Nice!
Do these and tiger swallowtails only lay on wild black cherry or will any cherry tree be fine for the caterpillar?
From everything I have ever found they prefer wild black cherry.
I've seen them on my dogs poo 😅
