It's because a sphere would be shaded in a very similar way. Without the blue lines, it would look more like a sphere.

As a decent portrait sketch artist, I just have to say that drawing a perfect circle is very difficult. I have to use stencils and other items to trace circles. I'm not bad at drawing circles, I'm just not satisfied with my circles, hahaha.
