I think they've smashed it out with the costumes and uniforms in this film. You can tell from the directors, the cast, the crew, the sets and especially the costumes they have all put alot of effort and passion into this phenomenal story for us. Great video, you got a new sub. Thanks.👍🏽 Onto the armour video, ill leave a comment too. 👌🏽
Hmm I say I prefer the newer style of uniform but I agree maybe the dress version might had needed bit more decorations but I feel it worked eny way to the feel of the movie in general. As how simple or brutalist style some of the building and tehcnology gave.
I agree with you. I love 2021 Dune design, mainly Arrakeen 's architecture. But I also think the women' s dresses could have been more decorated, and I also missed the jewellery (earrings, necklace) mainly from Lady Jessica. She looked pretty 'simple' for a Duke's concubine. Though, on the other side, this simpleness what pretty futuristic
Thank you for all the work you put into these videos. It makes me even more excited to watch this. I like the more simple uniforms better to be honest. As a custom tailor I appreciate more the subtle hints and of wealth in a good cut, tailored and designed piece and these uniforms show that imo. You don´t need more adornments if your basic piece is a piece of art.
Quite so, I agree with the basic garment being well tailored. Such shows the skill of the craftsman, and the money and connections you have in order to have requested such an item. I really hope to see a video about Jessicas wardrobe, too, because she has some delightful, simple pieces.
I actually like the toned down design of 2021 a bit more, though their dress/formal uniforms could've been a little bit more decorated like in the 1984 version. I also really like the working uniforms. Something I did like in the 1984 film was that the Atreides soldiers switched from dark green uniforms on Caladan to a more desert-appropriate tan/khaki (not sure which) on Arrakis. Do we see this in the 2021 film? I can see Thufir seems to be wearing a lighter-colored uniform that would be better for the desert compared to the dark green everyone else is wearing, but it seems like that's more his own costume than anything else.
Taking insp from the Romanovs seems especially appropriate given that many of them were doomed, and House Atreides was all but destroyed at the end of Dune pt.1
@@Costume_CO I wonder why The mentat got the green softer more duty specific uniform, with the sam brown belt but the Royal household wore the darker green. They also had that battle dress uniform. It was just interesting that the Thufer had his own special uniform...anyway just ranting lol
I think the Atreides green comes from their sigil. I'm not sure about Thufur. It does look a bit like desert battle dress. I think in the book he has his own regiment. I'm just going from memory here. :)
I think that the Dress uniforms would have been just that. while House Atreides , may well be a less ostentatious Hose than others,I think they would have had a bit more bling to them, however, the visuals on the new movie are very nice. We shall see how it all plays out. Good vid . Just as a footnote I first read Dune in summer of 1970, so I have been with the story for a long time.
I think if you want to go simple when it comes to adornment then the cut can be more interesting. These are supposed to be Uber rich people so understated is a bit boring.
They weren't ultra rich, in the book it mentions that they weren't one of the rich Houses; and also Leto tells Gurney that the treasury for the wages weren't bottomless.. they had to be careful! Or realistic
@@neilmurphy966 I mean that like a rich person saying I'm not rich cuz I have 10 cars and not 30. Like they are still richer than most of the people on Caladan(sp). Showing that would be important.
I prefer the more colorful uniforms from the old Dune movie. They look more royal and you can easier distinguish the various ranks among the Atreides. In the newer movie, I can hardly see the difference between a simple foot soldier and Gurney Halleck
I think that was the point - the Atreides led from the front and the generals slept with and messed with their troops. They didn’t seek to distinguish themselves too greatly from the people they led. The Atreides fundamental compassion for the people under their rule meant their troops were loyal as well as lethal and the other Houses in the Imperium were allying with House Atreides. This was the subplot of the entire movie and why the Padishah Emperor set out to destroy the entire House Atreides. House Atreides was a direct threat to the Padishah Emperor.
@@andrewcombe8907 I am currently reading the book and I'm seeing that now. Unfortunately, I think the movie did not a good job in portraying this fact as well as the threat the Atreides are actually for the Emperor
The 2021 film has very sleek costumes which are more modern and have a charm to them but I fell in love with the Dune Costumes from the mini series on Syfy (when it was still SciFi). There were different color/palettes for each house that were bright and had a sense of theatricality to it, dare I say bordering on camp or drag. I have not read the books so I cannot say if they were accurate to what was described but it felt like a very vibrant world and was closer to the more classical paintings fo the past that you showed in your video. If you haven't seen it, take a look at he Dune mini series as well as its sequel Children of Dune with a young James McAvoy.
Love tha breakdown always learn something when I watch your awsome vids.Love your take on what Empire of tha Dawn from ice & fire attire might look like being a eastern Asian look to it bloodstone emperor could see long birds with silk & leathers.thank you for your time
I do think all the costumes could have been alot more colorful and less bland. And with alot of decorations for duke so just by looking at his you will know who is who , duke looks a certain way compared to gernie or paul.
The David Lynch version had issues...no doubt. But it's going to be EXTREMELY difficult to top the costume, set design and music from that film. From what I've seen & heard so far I much prefer the Lynch designs.
The reasons for accoutrements on uniforms are to denote rank and qualifications at a glance. While they're sleek and smart looking, the 2021 Dune Atreides uniforms fail in this regard. No wonder they get [redacted] at [redacted]. It's hard to maintain order if you don't know who's boss. Well done video!
@@Costume_CO I think the challenge is they went with so much black in the costume. There is nothing to pop the black and green crest. Considering they had a water homeworld, could have gone with Navy whites.
I think so far the aesthetics of this movie are very bland and boring. Dune is set thousands of years in the future. And everything i saw so far seems to come from a Gap ad.. Im not saying it should be Star Wars or Dune 84 level of fantasy, but at least to make us travel somewhere a little exotic. I don’t see anything exotic so far about the costumes we have seen.
I just saw the movie and it is all very minimal. I think that is the aesthetic for the entire movie including the buildings and the spacecraft. It's all very brutalist as I mentioned in my armour video. That being said, I don't think the look will appeal to everyone but those who like this style will.

I think I prefer the less adorned 2021 uniforms over the 1984 more typical 19th century military style. I'm looking forward to seeing this movie!
