I think Anakin also realized he had gone terribly wrong when he didn’t help Mace Windu kill Palpatine. He didn’t want to make the same mistake with Luke. Padme and Luke knew the truth. The best part of Anakin still existed within Darth Vader. Awesome video as always!!
Qui-Gon also felt that Anakin was still inside Vader, but locked up in prison and sleeping, so to speak. Jin also believed in Anakin's return to the light.
Watching this scene in May 1983 when Return of the Jedi came out was so powerfully dramatic and overwhelming, especially the moment when Vader grabbed the Emperor and destroyed him by throwing him into the core shaft, I'll tell you the response by the packed theater that day I will never ever forget all my days. Everyone including myself were just absolutely emotional and all of us were on our feet shouting with joy and cries of relief!! Just absolutely incredible!!!❤️👍😆
That feeling might never go away, but isn't it so much more satisfying watching it now with episodes one through six? Because now you get the backstory and the full context of the moment Anakin Skywalker returns
I think the novel version of The Return Of The Jedi pictures the end of that scene a bit differently. It has been years since I read it but I think Anakin/Vader was trying to slide into the shaft after Palpatine was destroyed but Luke pulled him back.
That's an unnecessary part to be honest, because Vader has succeeded in "killing himself" a few minutes later. Would've made sense if he survived though.
He was obviously so tired of his life after Mustafar that he just wanted to die no matter what way. That he didn't even try to feed off the dark side when his suit failed.
I have all 3 OT books that’s what I thought. Quote from the book: “The wind whipped at Lord Vader’s cape, as he staggered and collapsed toward the hole, trying to follow his master to the end.”
@@RetneysHolocron Thank you very much. I have always been wondering what his thoughts were. It’s a lot to go through especially in an extremely short timespan.
In the radio adaptation of this scene there was actually words between Vader and Sidious. Vader last words before yeeting the emperor down the reactor shaft. Darth Sidious: Vader release me.....I command you....put me down! Darth Vader: I will....down the core shaft! Darth Sidious: Vader! I am your master! Darth Vader: Darth Vader's master! But not Anakin Skywalker's!
@@lordmaul3 it seems like it was anger and shock. But probably shock because Palpatine knew that if Vader was to ever turn against him Vader would die.
The novelization the rise and fall of Darth Vader is an excellent insight into Vader and Anakin's perspective throughout George Lucas's films. This part is why I never wanted Vader to scream "no" again. It doesn't make him look stoic. Nor does it make logical sense. When Vader screams at the end of revenge of the Sith, he's Darth Vader. When Vader realizes that the emperor is not only only going to kill the grandson of Simi Skywalker, the son of Padme Amidala, but his son, who loves him because he realizes that there's good in him just like his mother did, and in that moment he could not let the emperor kill Luke Skywalker. Because in that moment is when Anakin Skywalker returns. He realizes he's in the suit of Darth Vader and in order to save his son he must sacrifice himself and he does so lovingly. He doesn't do so out of greed like he mistakenly killed his wife. He does it out of selfless love. He redeems himself and destroys both Darth Vader and Darth Sidious together in one heroic act fulfilling the prophecy of the chosen one and bringing balance to the force. it's a perfect ending to a story of good and evil.
I remember when I was watching return of the Jedi with a friend and he asked how the emperor never sensed Vader coming in to kill him. It was because it was an act of love not hatred so the emperor was blind to it. He didn't know the feeling of it. He only knew hatred so Vader would have attacked him in an act of hatred. He would have sensed it coming immediately
Exactly you got it. When Vader screams no at the end of revenge of the Sith, he Darth Vader selfishly realizing he got cheated siding with Palpatine. When he emerges as Anakin Skywalker within the suit of Darth Vader in return of the Jedi, he saves his son out of an act of selfless love. And you're absolutely right. The Emperor could never see it coming. Because even Obi-Wan Kenobi never saw it coming. In the book, "the life and legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi", you'll know that his spirit is silently watching this dual play out. When Anakin destroys Palpatine he's shocked and then realizes why he was wrong and Luke was right. Luke was right that he still had good in him and Obi-Wan was wrong. This is what makes Luke the true founder of the new Jedi order. The old Jedi order was two entrenched in the previous thousand years that it became archaic and didn't account for specific circumstances, when there was legitimate love between one and another. Luke's new Jedi order Accepted marriage and that as a Jedi you could still have a family and not be connected to the dark side of the force.
@@thesentinel5523 I actually read that book and yeah Obi wan thought Luke was about to die. He even apologized to Anakin and said he was wrong. Which is why I have issues with the sequels, because everything Luke went through to save his father and then in the new trilogy sits there and contemplates killing his nephew because he senses darkness in him. Even Mark Hamill said Luke would never contemplate killing his nephew. You know where is all that compassion you had for your father whom everyone believed was gone and taken over by Darth Vader, and then you have your nephew who shows signs of being tempted by the dark side. But you also see signs of him being tempted back to the light, Luke would definitely have worked with him and tried to steer him back towards the light.
@@dionkempfI agree with you 💯 % and that’s my theory as well, Anger and hatred was keeping his body going all these years in addition to a badly designed suit. To be honest with you, his love for Luke Weakened him severely, and finally his body gave out because there was no more power from the dark side fueling him. @@dionkempf Your 100% correct because whenever he got his life support system damaged or when he was eletrocuted he was badly hurt but he never died from those things happening to him until he turned back to the light

The book states Luke injured him more than is shown in the film
@@RetneysHolocron Oh hmm its weird that its hard to tell how much luke hurt vader in the film and that we need the book in order to figure that out..
in my opinion the reason he died is because he let go of the hatred that kept him alive because we saw him survive similar injuries
