I genuinely have no idea what RTD is doing. The first episode is borderline unwatchable, a constant sledgehammer to the face of woke nonsense which he then follows up with a proper episode having lost a massive chunk of the fanbase with the first catastrophe. Ok, its wasn't top tier stuff but it was better than anything that Chinballs wrote in 5 years, kept the sledgehammer mostly in the shed (Isaac Newton Singh and the throwaway gay line notwithstanding) and ended with Bernard Cribbins (official UK national treasure RIP).
I'll take 13 eps like the second one and be fairly happy. I'll take a chainsaw to the gonads over 13 episodes like ep 1.

Trying to attract new viewers is laudable but doing so at the expense of the long established (and merchandise buying) fanbase is just dumb and shows they only care about pushing an agenda. Luckily we can still watch the good old episodes for all time and don't have to give the new dross any of our eyes, energy of money. Here endeth the lesson.

Interesting take, and i have to say i found RTD's brick-in-your-face approach to social messaging so far very strange and most likely deliberately antagonistic. I think the Timeless Children was actually a pretty fair idea. I don't think it stamps on the idea that William Hartnell is the First Doctor. He's at least the first Doctor the Current Doctor remembers, and I think William Hartnell's legacy falls more on him starting the show rather than being the "First canonical Doctor."
It's not really about the First Doctor not being the first Doctor. And now Peter Cushing and everyone can be canon which is cool

    • @markpostgate2551
      @markpostgate2551 9 месяцев назад +4

Peter Cushing can't be "canon" even with the Timeless Child in that
      a) he has the exact same adventures as Hartnell's Doctor.
      b) He is human; not a Time Lord.
The nearest thing to canonizing Cushing's Doctor is the suggestion that his two movies exist in the Doctor Who universe as film adaptations based off of Ian Chesterton's published fictional accounts based off his own adventures.
I think Chibnall narrowly missed a potentially better version of a secret forgotten past for the Doctor if the revelation was not that he was the child but that he was Tecteun. Tecteun is surely "the Other" of the Cartmel Masterplan, i.e. the third great founder of Time Lord society after Rassilon and Omega, and surely as the inventor of regeneration her nickname would be "the Doctor". And rediscovering a secret past of being an evil abusive sociopath, especially to someone as moral as the Doctor, would be far more traumatic and dramatic, than discovering you were a magic victim. So I think Chibnall was quite close to an interesting idea and missed it in the snatch and grabbed a booby prize instead.

    • @carealoo744
      @carealoo744 9 месяцев назад +3

@@markpostgate2551 I mean not really. I want to mention that of course Chibnall could have put in a little more effort too. If it was at all in his intentions to make these incarnations potentially cannon, he could have gone a little out of his way to try and explain how that could have been the case, but perhaps that would have been a little bit too much for the casual audience to handle, as if the episode wasn't already kind of overfilled with stuff I casual audience member wouldn't get.
But I still think it's possible for the Peter Cushing Doctor to be canon-
Maybe this Doctor was an incarnation that had to go under cover and use the fobwatch to make himself human, but it went wrong. It went just right enough for him to become human, and live a long human life that allowed him to have a human granddaughter that he happened to name Susan, but it also went just wrong enough to give himself a name like: "Doctor Who," and manage to build a fully functional TARDIS in his own backyard (or maybe that's his real TARDIS and he either thinks he built it, or is just pretending he built it one in reality he found it but he doesn't know how to explain that.)
Either way, the universe is a big place. Yes, you'd probably think that if a similar species that evolved into the exact same thing as the Daleks existed, they'd probably be in more records somewhere, but maybe these are indeed real Daleks and just happen to exist in some other corner of the universe or some other hidden point in the timeline where it would just manage to fit for the whole adventure to happen twice.
Does the Invasion of Earth movie actually take place in the year 2164 like in the show? I actually can't remember, but if the year is even slightly off, that gives it room for it to take place in the same timeline as the show version. Yes, it's stupidly stretching it, but I'm just saying that it's possible.
Besides, this takes place so far back in the Doctor's timeline, that may be an event similar to the Time War occurred that manipulated the time stream into either erasing these adventures, or somehow allowing them to happen twice. I dunno

Claiming RTD is a subtle writer is a bit naive and a bit nostalgic. Go back and watch some of Russell's earlier seasons of Dr who. No subtlety at all. (Also Davros was brought back in 2008, not 2009)

    • @deadman746

RTD was blatantly nuanced. He hid in plain sight deeply complex moral quandaries with a dead and dessicated pan.
I attribute the word problem to transatlantic linguistic differences. When the lot across the pond says _e.g._ "the woke is on the nose" we Merkins think it means "the woke messages are precise and perspicacious" whereas it means "the anti-woke messages are in your face."
I hope the video is right, but the anti-woke sexism in _The Star Beast_ is so dangerous and regressive I am not persuaded that chumping the BBC is worth the potential damage. _Wild Blue Yonder_ has the virtue of being so stupid it probably won't indoctrinate anybody.

Also, with Davros, what makes him so sympathetic and tragic is that he did that to himself...he isn't Davros if he lacks that maniacal loss of self to become a war machine and the progenitor of the Daleks. And, yes, above all, people want to be enthralled with good storytelling vs. the message.

"Rejoined" is Season 4, Episode 5. But some of the cultural context of that episode was set up in previous episodes, and I recommend that you watch Season 1, Episode 8, "Dax" first. While we don't see quite as much of the carried over intimacy in this episode (They were still fighting to get *ANY* type of representation past the censors then), Jadzia was more than willing to be convicted of murder and treason rather than expose Curzon's lover by disclosing her alibi. The use of Trill culture as more than allegory to address LGBTQ+ issues throughout their entire tenure within the Star Trek franchise was extraordinarily well done.

That depends on what their cause is. If they intend to cause division they achieve that pretty well.
Let's take the recent Newton one. If Newton was played by someone who actually looked like Newton and the Doctor didn't announce he felt gay for him it would still be a poor joke with no purpose or bearing on the plot, so why is it there at all? Is it to raise awareness of the role of India in world history? No. In 628AD a theory of gravity was postulated by an Indian; Brahmagupta. Did you know that? That would be quite interesting; quite educational and give you some insight into the fact that India has a massive history of its own separate from our Eurocentric version of history. Pretending Newton was Indian is not only a blatant lie it still reinforces the eurocentric belief that all thr key scientific discoveries occurred just once and in Europe.
So it's not for the purposes of broadening our cultural awareness!
But it does give some material for all the people angry at the wokeness to deliver for their diatribes against wokeness in the media. What if that was its only purpose? What if the only point is to stir up some anger and then anger at the anget and then anger at the anger at the anger and that was the only purpose it served and the only intention?

I switched off during the Jodie / Chibnall era and am cautiously returning to the show again. The writing, acting and production was insultingly bad and worse the show was simply so boring that it was insufferable to sit through.
They made a lot of good choices for these specials, bringing back RTD, Murray Gold doing the music, Tennant who can actually act playing the part, clearly more money going into the production.
The biggest problems so far are the complete lack of subtlety in the socio-political commentary. It would have been enough to simply have Donna’s son be trans, they didn’t have to write it into the climax of the story and have Donna and her son insult the Doctor for being a man.
Also RTD has made the baffling choice to double down on the show-ruining retcons of the Chibnall era. Doctor Who has always been a show which chooses its own canon, based on what’s popular, so why RTD would choose to stick with the Timeless Child concept and The Flux concept when not of those ideas were extremely unpopular and borderline incomprehensible just completely baffles me.

Casanova - the casting video for the role of the 10th Doctor - written by Giacomo Casanova himself - but RTD made choices of WHAT to show of all the stuff written more than 200 years ago 😋

@@user-oc8no5jc2r Captain Jack Harkness was the first overtly sexual, nonstereotypical examples of bisexuality on television. He’s a brilliant showrunner who has always had these themes running through the show, and his previous work.
Portraying the Doctor as a man who stands up for what he believes in, and still be vulnerable to anger, pain and loss is the total opposite of misandry in RTDs writing. I actually can’t remember seeing a male sci-fi character cry over loosing a girlfriend before RTD showed that in Doomsday, and it was not in any way forced.
Your problem is that you’re looking for tokenism. He’s having to rehabilitate the series from a previous showrunner who did everything for tokenistic value, and if you’ve watched Dr Who Unleashed, he explains each and every element of why he does what he does and it’s never for representation for representation’s sake. Take a gander on the other side of the echo chamber, and you’ll see him being called a racist, antisemite, and misogynistic. People are looking for what they want to see lol.

yk, i think RTD is just doing this stuff for the first 3 episodes, no-wonder a gay man would want to weed out the bigoted "people" of society

So a channel with less than 500 subscribers has sources that are high up in the BBC?

When Disney bought the streaming rights to Doctor Who Russell T Davies was forced (or should I say got PAID A LOT) to write woke into the stories that was the only way Disney would do the deal from what I've read. Hopefully the backlash from all of Disney's failures changes their tune.

RTD's eras weren't even close to the most mainstream and popular. Even Peter Davison was more mainstream. Also the SJW crap began with the first Peter Capaldi era. Missy was the beginning and I am fed up of people not saying that. Drives me nuts.

The first RTD era was consistently in the weekly top ten. Davison, much as I love his Doctor, never even troubled the top twenty. Even in a time without Chanel 4 or 5.
