I think you are thinking about the $100,000 gold certificates with Woodrow Wilson on them. They were printed for federal reserve transfer not for the public. The public did have $500, $1000, $5000, and $10,000 notes in the past with most of them being gold certificates.

You should read “the Great Depression, a diary”. I read it during lockdown. The numbers part got boring at times but it was an interesting book.
