    Generation War Official Trailer 1 (2013) - War Drama HD
    Berlin, 1941. Five friends eager to become heroes in an adventure that will change the face of Europe - and that will forever change them as well. Level-headed, highly decorated officer Wilhelm is off to the eastern front with his younger brother Friedhelm, a sensitive dreamer more interested in literature than warfare. Deeply in love with Wilhelm is Charlotte, a young nurse who looks forward to serving in the Wehrmacht, also on the eastern front. While Greta is a talented singer who longs to become another Marlene Dietrich, her Jewish boyfriend Viktor still cannot convince his parents to leave Germany... Valor and courage come to the fore, but also betrayal - of values, beliefs, humanity. Friedhelm turns into a soulless killing machine... Wilhelm deserts his troops and is court-martialed... Charlotte's Nazi ideology crumbles when she betrays a Jewish nurse helping the German army... Greta obtains papers for Viktor's escape by selling herself to an SS colonel. They and millions of others wanted to be heroes; but none of them could imagine what the war would ultimately do to them and to the rest of the world.

    As a german i'm very happy for this Series and it's international success. Too bad my grandfather isn't alive anymore to see this, he was a Wehrmacht Soldier, survived the war, lost almost all of his friends and family in the war, didn't see his wife for years and was a POW of the americans after the war, he was always very sad about every movie and series showing german Wehrmacht soldiers as some comic-type evil villain, the bad guys were usually the "political soldiers" and there were only a few of them in the Wehrmacht. The average Wehrmacht soldier wasn't any different from the average british, american or french soldier. Everybody hoped the war would be over soon so they can go back to their wives and children.

      Ti Ma....i'm intrigued by this movie but it's really hard to find in the U.S. Is there even a German website where I can watch it? Or an international version?
      As far as I know I have one great uncle who served in the war as a pilot in Europe but and my grandmother was living in Honolulu and witnessed the entire attack on Pearl Harbor. She's 81 now and it's an interesting link to a huge historical event. I like listening to stories about that era from people from countries on all sides.

      Send me a message and i'll show you where to watch it with english subtitles.
      Yes i'm always interested in stories, doesn't matter by whom, it's always interesting and i respect every war veteran. The war is over and i only feel anger towards war criminals such as two americans who raped my grand-aunt for several days and forced her to cook for them while they stayed there. In the meantime her husband, my grand uncle was fighting further north thinking my grand-aunt was safe.
      War Criminals of every country should be persecuted, it is very sad that apparently only war criminals from axis countries got punished.
      I hope those two americans got punished for that. But i doubt it.

      you Germans are not the only ones who are suffering. My French cousin was driven to commit suicide in america back in 2003. She was only 15, she died for other people's sins. because the americans laughed and taunted her country's behaviour during WWII, called her a traitor, a collaborator, a gestapo whore. She was only 15!!!!!!!

    I am a German and proud of it.
    Why should I feel guilty? I was born after the fall of the Berlin Wall. I had nothing to do with the past. I know everything of the war, it was horrible. Every child learns the history in school. It is a part of the German history, that's how we deal with it.
    The brother of my grandfather hat to choose: fight for the country or his whole family will die. He killed himself. That's what my father told me, when I asked him about my grandfather who died before I were born. My grandmother was a noise in the war.Earlier, people had no choice on which side they are. No one have the choice in war, fight or die. And it's not their fault.
    Some countries were built on the blood of their inhabitants. No one convicted. People learn from their mistakes, also from the mistakes of others. We should learn to take consideration of all humans not to blame them.

      yeah, i'm an american, and growing up, i had the typical view of the war: Americans: good, innocent, and saviors of the world. Germans: evil, corrupt people who wanted to enslave the world. as i got older, and did research and watched anti war movies, i've come to the realization that in war, there is no good side, just two sides fighting for what they believe in. a quote from the movie The Thin Red Line went something like: "War turns men into dogs." so even if you are fighting a just war, and you're on the "good" side, it doesn't matter what side you're on, because war turns both sides into evil killers.
      this is the real definition of war: Innocent civilians are sent far away to kill innocent civilians, so corrupt governments can profit from it. War never changes.

      If you like reading, and history, you should check out the book 'Reich' by James Lucas. Tells the story from a German Perspective, something not usually shown. It focuses more on Germany and Europe as a whole, rather than just the militaristic side of things.
      The Synopsis for the book:
      "While Allied propaganda would have us believe that during the Second World War the German population were downtrodden workers, with no rights and totally under the power and influence of the all-controlling Gestapo, the truth is somewhat different. While the Allies saw Hitler as an evil to be removed from power, in 1933 the German people saw him as a savior, able to rescue them from the humiliation of Versailles and provide a strong leader. The German people themselves felt that they had social benefits unmatched by their neighboring states, and that its poverty had been eliminated while their economy had been stabilized. James Lucas presents fascinating insight into the real Reich, a glimpse into the life on the German home front. After many years’ research and interviews with civilians and German soldiers, Lucas offers a study of the social, economic and military phenomena of the Nazi regime."
      TL;DR: A brilliant book called 'Reich' by James Lucas covers WW2 through German eyes.

    Some people claim Germans even these days are being two-faced about their attitude toward slavic nations, claiming they are ok with them and in reality still hating Poles and Russians (mainly these two nations). I live very close to German border and I'm telling you people, this is not true. Some of them might be extremist nationalists (like we have in all countries) but most commonly I meet very friendly and kind people. They realise that I'm polish, but when I ask them to show me the way to a shop, post office or whatever they even walk with me to the place. We are all brothers and sisters, do not ever listen to any racist bullshit people try to smuggle into your heads.

      To give u a clue why some people reagard this as a movie:
      First of all, it was produced in Co-Operation with Landesmedienanstalt and the ARD, both are almost crowdfounded through taxes, so they can mostly stay independent form advertisment and any form of political and social pressure and enducetment.
      So cause the ARD Co-Produced it, they wanted to televise it at primetime, which is considert from 8.15 pm to 21.45/22.30 pm. Depending if thier are ad-breaks inbetween or not. The so call "public service broadcaster" dont have to make those ad-breaks, cause they get paid for their duty, essentialy by every german Household. That the main reason why german movies with over-time like this comes in episodes. So they can use their primetime between the news aporpiated.
      And the last thing i wanna tell u, because of the fact that the ARD and ZDF, both are "public service broadcaster"s they have a freedom to produce more films like this. U migth wanna watch "Dresden",from around 2008, "Anonyma- Eine Frau in Berlin", "Mein Kampf", which shows a young Adolf Hitler during his time in Munich, as a young man as he wants to study art. This film gets very depressing. U migth also consider "Rommel" which shows him druing his WW II involvemt, and in his last days as Commander at the "Westwall". Their are even more films, but i dont know how much a available with subtitles.

    @Lopro94 3 года назад +11

    I've watched this series a couple days ago with my family. Not with my grandparents, who aren't alive anymore but with my parents. Although today the physical rubble is long removed and, at first sight, all seems restored, there is a lot of emotional ruins left in German society. It's a socio-psychological legacy of guilt and trauma that is passed on within social relationships, most of all within the family. My parents are affected by the trauma of their parents and so am I affected by my parents and likely will be my children by me (although I will of course try my best to counteract that, as did my parents, for which I am grateful). But how could they give something to me they were not given as children? It's a slow learning and healing process that takes generations. And WWII and the Holocaust affected so many individuals and families in Europe and all over the world. So many individual lives were crushed in the most unthinkable ways. So I am sure that there is a lot of scar tissue left today - whether in the families of concentration camp survivors or soldiers or civilians. And this includes all countries affected by WWII. I think the weight of this legacy is still graspable today if you care to look. There is a lot of literature on transgenerational trauma but this topic is not very widely recognized in Germany although there exist plenty of memorial sites and political ceremonies to commemorate the violence. To understand my emotions and my personal history in the wider context of what happened is crucial! Primarily for me, so I can deal with my emotions and relationships. But I also see it as crucial for society, in order to be able to cope with challenges. We are dealing with a lot of existential fear at the moment: Economic crises, climate change and now COVID19. And we are seeing new movements of xenophobia and antisemitism and conspiracy theory. A trauma that is unconscious is doomed to be repeated/recreated. And we all want this NEVER to happen again. So there is work to be done. Most of all at the individual level. And we must communicate to share and heal, we cannot drown our feelings it in shame and silence. Germany is often seen as exemplary for dealing with it's past and I think a lot of good work has been done but it is not enough to rest on those laurels. This topic is super relevant and we need to address it. And from this perspective there is SO MUCH to be done. I can't even start to talk about how deep the scars of colonization affect our world today and what the consequences of ongoing wars will be if we don't start to deal with it on a societal level. There is so much potential for compassion and empathy and community. So we should use the privilege of our resources (in Germany) and get going. And the first step is talking. In that sense, this documentary is what is supposed to be - a door opener. That's enough ranting from me now :) wherever you are when you read this, be well!

    I really liked this film and it opened my mind up more. I feel as though it excels Band of Brothers and the Pacific because it doesn't focus on following soldiers, but uses the group of friends to show other aspects of the effects of the war.
    The biggest thing I realized in this was a general idea of their feelings in a war that was already "lost" long before May of 1945.

    In Deutschland wurde der Film als 3 Teiler unter dem Namen "Unsere Väter, unsere Mütter" ausgestrahlt, da der Krieg selten aus deutscher Sicht gezeigt wird ist es eine willkommene Abwechslung gegenüber Filmen wie "Fury" der eher an ein heroisches Heldenepos erinnert. Desweiteren steht die deutsche Ostfront im Vordergrund der militärischen Auseinandersetzung, welche auch eher selten auf der Leinwand zu sehen ist obwohl sie der wahre Brennpunkt des Krieges war.

      It wouldn't have been half as deep if it had Spielberg in it. The guys a good filmaker, but he's also Jewish. No way would he have been able to do as good a job, he'd have way too much personal baggage.

    • @MyloXyloto94
      @MyloXyloto94 10 лет назад +2

      I understand Spielberg is Jewish. I should have been more specific. I meant, to not have directors with the money Spielberg or Hanks has, this is great. I also know Spielberg would probably never make a show about Germany like this anyway because of his ethnicity. Then again, Band of Brothers showed a human side of Germany that no one had seen before. All we learn in primary school in America and England is that Germans were Nazi;s and that was that. Without this and Band of Brothers, many would still be history blind.

    A recent masterpiece is the German war movie "Lore". Like "Downfall" it is set in the final days of the 3rd Reich as the Allies and Red Army close in on Berlin. But this time the story is told through the eyes of a 14 year old girl and her younger siblings who are refugees now adrift in their own country. It is a very powerful film, much like a novel Gunter Grass might have written then brought to the big screen. Don't miss it.

    • @hansmaulwurf7641
      @hansmaulwurf7641 6 лет назад +1

      Even though it's been a while, I just saw your comment. First off: did you see the "film" or the entire three-part mini-series? Because I watched the latter, and only that, therefore there's a chance you might not realize what I'm referring to if you've only watched the film (didn't know there was one tbh).
      With that out of the way: please don't base your studies on this movie, and even more so, don't assume it's realistic. There are a couple of reasons for that.
      1. The film/series starts in 1941, with the protagonists being in their late teens/early 20s. The very composition of the group is unrealistic: very few Germans would have hung around with Jews by 1941, after more than eight years of Nazi indoctrination. Certainly not at that age - plenty of older Germans, who had been married to Jews for decades in some cases, filed for divorce to rid themselves of the stigma of being closely associated to "enemies of the people". Also bear in mind that the natural environment for young people to mingle, schools, had been segregated since 1935. For Wilhelm, as an active duty Wehrmacht officer, fraternising with Jews - although not outright illegal at the time - could even have had disciplinary consequences. This makes the whole premise of the movie/series highly unlikely, although not completely impossible.
      2. The depiction of the Polish partisans is highly problematic. In fact, they are the only openly antisemitic protagonists in the entire movie/series (bear in mind: the full three parts had a combined runtime of 270 minutes). Even the SS officers that Wilhelm and Friedhelm encounter never openly acknowledge antisemitic motives. This is borderline falsification of history. The AK (Armia Krajowa, Polish Home Army) did have antisemitic elements - as did almost all partisan formations and EVERY "official" allied army - but these were by no means dominant. In fact, the AK did much to help Jews escape the Ghettos and Death camps. They provided hiding spaces for refugees, weapons to the Jewish resistance, and intelligence to the Allies. Members of the AK even smuggled themselves into Auschwitz voluntarily (!), escaped and reported their findings to London. The Holocaust Memorial Institution of Yad Vashem in Israel has named more Poles as "Righteous among the People" for their selfless aid to Jews than members of any other nationality.
      3. At the beginning of the 3rd part of the series, Wilhelm is taken captive as a deserter, sentenced to death but ultimately spared to serve in a punishment batallion. Again, this is not the "average" experience of a Wehrmacht soldier. Around 18 million "Reichsdeutsche" (comprising what is Germany, parts of Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria these days) men served in the German armed forces during WWII. Of these, less than 30 000 ever faced trial for desertion (more than 20 000 of whom were executed). That's less than 0.2% of all Wehrmacht personnel during the war who faced a court martial for desertion. Not saying it didn't happen at all, but it's certainly not an "accurate" depiction of the average fate of a German soldier.
      Conclusion: From a purely artistic standpoint, the movie or mini-series is certainly well made. I enjoyed watching it as well. But it cannot and should not serve as a trustworthy depiction of "average" German fates during WWII. And it fails completely in the portrayal of the Polish resistance. I would recommend "Das Boot" to see a much more realistic approach to war mentality from a German perspective. Or the Golden Globe winner and Academy Award nominated black-and-white "Die Brücke" from 1959, one of the first WWII films produced in (West) Germany after the war. For an entirely bleak perspective on the war on the Eastern Front watch "Come and See", a Soviet movie from 1985.
      Hope you read this. If you have any questions, feel free to comment back, I think I'll get a notification. And good luck with your studies!

    • @violentscorl697
      @violentscorl697 5 лет назад +4

      Hans Maulwurf Regarding your Second Point: There were certainly more than one person to ‚openly acknowledge‘ antisemitic thoughts. Remember the „cleaning“ of the Ukrainian city in part one, where one of the SS-Officers shoots a little girl? He even says something along the lines of „dirty Jew blood splatters everywhere. We have to protect the German people from it“. If _that‘s_ not outright antisemitic,I don’t know what is.
      Regarding your third point:The series never states to depict the „average“ soldier life, so I don’t see the problem in showing Wilhelm‘s desertion and its consequences. And him being spared in favor of using him in a special battalion is historically accurate as well.

    Such suspense. I like it. Need more shows like these nowadays. Got a quote from a fictional book that resonates with me: "Humanity's weakest souls will always cling to the words "I was just following orders." They cower behind those words, making a virtue of their own weakness, lionizing brutality over nobility. I know that when I die, I'll have lived my whole life shrouded by that same excuse."
    It's hard to go against orders. The Army has a chain of command that is binding. That one order that they ignore could have saved lives. But it's hard to follow that order when you have to shoot unarmed civilians. It makes soldiers start doubting whether their War is right cause in their hearts it feels ugly.

      What makes Greta's death so much worse was that she died barely more than a week before the war ended and she never got to say goodbye to Viktor

    I‘m not a German. But I live in Germany for my whole life. I‘ve discovered this movie series about 3 months ago. And I watched it already 8 times. It‘s heartbreaking but incredibly awesome not the good kind of way

    Soldiers are Soldiers. We do what we are told. Good and bad. Then we live with both the rest of our lives. No soldier should be ashamed of doing one duty. We never get to chose the decisions made for us.

    Der beste Film zum WK2, den ich bisher gesehen habe! Zeigt endlich mal, dass auch unsere Soldaten nur Menschen waren, wie alle anderen auch und nur so gehandelt haben, weil es nunmal nach dem Motto ging "Kämpf oder stirb".

    If you enjoyed this watch the miniseries "the boat", there is also the movie version but the series is even more thrilling. "Stalingrad" is another brutal and honest war movie that shows the German side of the war in an outstandingly touching and shocking way.

    A very good scene was when Friedhelm saw his friend and Jew Victor after so much time in the woods. He rather killed his commander than his friend...
