I saw that car at MCACN in Nov 21. It was a pretty rough example of a 1970 Hemi Challenger. I had seen a couple of video stories in passing so I went up and eyeballed the car. The family of the original owner was there with the car, everybody was oohing and ahhing over the car. I congratulated the family on the car as did everyone else. Later I found out they were selling it at auction? I thought the dying wish of the patriarch was that the car remain in the family. At 72 y/o I love that era of the stoplight derby on Woodward Ave and have read extensively on the topic. Funny, the "black ghost" was never on the radar till it suddenly hit the internet a couple years ago. Not surprisingly, the son Gregory Qualls is a filmmaker and makes a living producing the make believe. Kudos to Hagerty, Mecum, Dodge and probably the dueling buyers at Mecum for foisting one of the great scams on the collector car world ever seen. This was a collection of made up stories extrapolated into a myth and sold for a huge profit for all involved.

That's very cool that you've seen it in person and talked to them despite the controversy. I also love that you've read up on the topic of Woodward Avenue. Are there any books or articles you would recommend for us to read on the topic?

@@maxsav007 I have been doing this longer than you kid---dont believe every thing you read...those bullshit Hemi price stories are invented to hype up the price of the car.
The 426 is not that great....only 350 NET horsepower, a 2023 Dodge 5.7 Challenger has more at 375 net and can match the 426 in the 1/4 mile in spite of weighing 400 pound more. But if you have owned a Dodge Dakota and brag about it you have a lot to learn about cars.....LOL>..

@@chadhaire1711 No one gives 2 shits about what a car is. Collectability has NOTHING to do with performance. Ferarri GTOs aren't that special eather but for some reason people still choose spend tens of millions on them. A stock, slow ass subaru 2dr sold for over 300g and skylines have broken a million. I dont need to believe shit, good job on watching 15yo videos chief. Have fun living in imagination land. Obviously your right so enjoy your endless supply of free hemis 👍👍. More for you

Ryan Snyder paid a $900k for marketing hype and $75k for a tired, bone stock Hemi Challenger. I watched that auction, it took about 8 minutes for that fool and his money to be parted.

The fact that this car has been included on the National Register of Historic Vehicles on the strength of the kids film flam story is a national embarrassment, and steps should be taken to rectify this egregious mistake. How this story was ever allowed to snowball into what it did without an adult stepping in and calling a time out is mind blowing. This Cock and Bull story is going to haunt this car till the end of time, I pity whoever bought it, the car will have a bad smell attached to it forever.

Me and a friend were street racers in NYC from May 1969 to about June 1972. We had a HEMI RoadRunner that was INCREDIBLE. We made a few mods like headers, rejetting the two carbs, electronic ignition......The Black Ghost was a poor legend. No kidding - a HEMI driven properly is a force to be reckoned with from the factory. Back to the Ghost. It was stock. Not a legend.... At the time, a fellow named Jim Addison, who EVERYBODY knew, drove a car backed by Chrysler Corp. ( through a back door) and was driven on the street with a fully modified RACE HEMI. It could take my RoadRunner (it was no slouch) AND the "Ghost" and fold us up and put us in the mail somewhere. The Silver Bullet OWNED Woodward Ave........Anyone who raced at the time knew who Jim Addison was. Why was it not spoken about when the "Legend",the Ghost was being sold ? It is a collector car, very rare. They just had a good writer .I am 70 now and I would not trade those days for anything. All the best !

It is a bone stock survivor with unsubstantiated street racing claims, nothing more. Still very cool as a survivor, but not a "legendary" street racer because no one who was a real "legendary" street raced did so in stock trim. All legendary street racers had built engines with racing cams and headers at a MINIMUM. A built 440 car would eat a stock Hemi's lunch. So would a real Z28, or Stage IV Buick GS. Even a run of the mill 350 Chevy small block in a Chevy II or Nova with 10.5:1 pistons, a hot cam and double hump heads would have matched it in power, and balanced to spin 7k rpms for a while until a rod eventually exits the block would gap this "legendary" street racer. Stop spreading lies about this car. It is an extremely rare very cool Survivor Muscle Car, nothing more and nothing less.

The true car that just sold for 1 mil 70 k +. Appears to have been a fully loaded 14 sec. Stock (not even headers or a single after market carb on her stock hemi intake)
The story teller (His Son) owns a story telling business that wants to make movies. Hmmmm.
Not a street race car. A nice fully optioned hemi powered muscle car though.

I believe it was 1970 when Ronnie Sox tested a four speed HEMI Cuda. In four runs at the track (on street tires) he did a best of 13.3 @ 111 MPH. And a worst of 14.1 @ 110 smoking the tires off the line for fun. Yes, even when a HEMI smokes the tires,it still turns in an incredible MPH at the end.
