Interesting. My parents did the 1962 Seattle World Fair trip too. They drove from Minnesota though in a 1961 VW Beatle. Stops included the Grand Coulee dam, Glacier National Park, the World Fair, a beach in Oregon, a Redwood forest, then San Francisco, and finally Yellowstone. Three weeks on a shoestring.
Same...I was 12 and my parents and 3 sisters always drove to visit my grandparents in Tacoma every summer..Dad always had a Studebaker wagon 😂 1962 we got to go to Vancouver B.C. and the world's fair in Seattle 😂
Old Seattle Boomer here...this is such a fine time capsule, showing how folks back then knew how to do a vacation!...I am a lifetime Seattle person, and attended the Fair a couple of times. It really was the greatest civic event of the 20th century, for Seattle!...10,000,000 people, from all over the US, and even some foreign countries, had a great time there!...your relatives actually did not shoot much film of the Fair, but they certainly were taken by the surrounding countryside, and the drive to get to Seattle was just wonderful!..We live in such a beautiful country, and I am glad your grandparents knew that, and enjoyed taking their time to admire so many beautiful places. You were a lucky person, to have such thoughtful relatives!
Greetings from Seattle! Just stumbled onto this. I'm originally from Oklahoma City, where I was born in 1952. A lot of the children seen in this footage would have been around my age (10) in 1962. I made my way to Seattle in 2009, across Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho and Oregon. Thanks for this! Enjoyed it.
This Trip is incredible! The Navigator riding Shotgun would have to have had at least 20 different Maps from AAA in the Glove Box, to figure out directions. Luckily I got to do this as a Kid in the 1980's, which I didn't really appreciate at the time. However, the thing i miss the most are the Brochures in the Motels in the Lobby that advertise places to go. Each Hotel would have 50-100 of them. It was considered "Google" at the time. I've lived in Seattle for 50 years & I still haven't visited every place in the Washington / Idaho section of the Trip yet. Just incredible !!
I was born in Seattle 1964. Was great to recognize the things that cant be changed. Great job making a permanent memory. People don't realize now how much planning it took to make that kind of trip in 1962. They had to have started well over a year before. All they had was a phone and US Mail. I'm sure there were obstacles and issues along the way. I did a 4k road trip around the entire West in summer of 1975 with my mom and sisters for 6 weeks. Will never forget it. My sister punched me at least 5 different times in the back seat. Thank you for sharing.
8:47 I have been trying for so long to find a photo of an Evergreen State class vessel with the century 21 branding for a couple of years now, I knew they wore it but had never seen it - so cool! This was awesome, I drive from the PNW to the SouthWest a couple times a year, cool to see roads I recognize so long ago.
Back when the Space Needle looked it best in its classic century 21 paint scheme and when the torch would be lit at the top of the needle, looked more tall and slender before the 100 foot level restaurant was built years later. The World's Fair was shut down on October 12 , 1962 because of the Columbus Day windstorm where winds in Seattle reached 100 knots. It was a Typhoon that came from Japan weakened then rejuvenation itself and moved inland hitting Northern California,Oregon,Washington and British Columbia calling it the West Coast Disaster.
So cool ..ty for sharing. My parents 3 sister and I (being 12 ) drove from San Diego to tacoma every summer...1962 we got to go to Vancouver B.C. and the world's fair...I got to see most of the west coast as a young kid...always in a Studebaker wagon 😂
Awesome film, our family lived in West Seattle and we went there in 62 and at 4 yrs old I vaguely remember but this brought back soo many memories, Thank You!
Thank you for posting this! I went to the fair in-utero…born days after it ended…was awesome to see places I still live near today…just a little older, more simple and carefree…cheers
OMG! my childhood too, and Similik Beach? I grew up playing golf there in the late 60's and '70's thank you so much for posting this video! Great views from mount Eerie !
I keep looking at all the people in the background at the fair because I was there with with my parents at the age of seven. We lived just across the water in Silverdale. Thank you for sharing.
I was at the fair in the summer of 1962. I was about the same age as the two boys I saw in this video (9yo). Who knows, we might have crossed paths on that very day! I recognized just about every scene shown that was in WA state, as I was born and raised here. Thanks for the video! Oh, that park with the high peaks looked very familiar. Was that Glacier Nat'l Park? That picture of Similk (you had an extra "i" in there) Beach, I live just 3 miles from there today. Anacortes, WA. You were on the tide flats which nowadays is off limits to humans. It's a designated wildlife sanctuary now. And the refinery in the background was only a few years old at that time.
Thanks for sharing this. Somehow it made me happy and sad at the same time. I miss that America so much. Wow I wish I was riding in that Fairlane with them.
Ah, Orcas and the San Juan Islands. Just a tad when those shots were filmed in '62. Life flies by. Thank you Dale Raymond James for sharing wonderful moments in time.
Looks like I’m a little late to the party here, but I have to say thanks for posting this. I was born and raised outside of Atlanta, GA and my entire childhood was filled with long drives and road trips around various parts of this country. Now, as an adult, my wife and I moved across this beautiful country to settle in Seattle, WA with our young boy to start a whole new chapter. Your footage reminds me just how important it is to see as much of your homeland as you possibly can before you leave this world. Some of my absolute fondest memories are of seeing new things with my family, and now I’m trying to build as many of those memories for my son as I possibly can. Thanks again! Oh, and really great music choices btw
The Seattle Worlds Fair.. ah yes. Not many know that Cessna built a Helicopter (skyhook) and I was able to actually ride in one as a kid. It was a failure for Cessna, but what a memory.
Hello! I am working on a project and was curious to know if I would be able to use some of this footage. Thanks! Any help would be greatly appreciated! 😊
So sorry for the delay, but absolutely you are welcome to use the footage. Just make sure to attribute the footage to The James Family and send me a link to the project.. would love to see it! I have all the original 8mm film preserved here as well if a better capture is required.
great footage of a place where I grew up which is now dead, the world has definitely gone bad thanx to the money hungry tyrants that have destroyed our great city
Videos like this are kinda heartbreaking. It's happy and sad seeing people younger who are old or no longer here. It's an America I barely remember or never have. I wish America as a whole could some how maybe genetically remember and change our path somehow, if you know what I mean. I'm Sad for a time I never really lived but wish me and especially my children could live or experience similarly. I also just miss the past and those that once were here
I know what you mean...our now decaying society, with people walking around with their faces buried in their cell phones, and not interacting with other folks, is very "cold", compared to the scenes we see in these touchingly simple films.
Yes, I was there. 8 years old. Very fond memories.

A time in America when people were decent to each other nice to see this
@Blake,
I turn 71 in a few weeks.
We are the last generation to enjoy this simple community feeling...
I miss these days , this is what the world should be now
Wow, the ferry landing on Orcas Island, now THAT brings back memories !!

Typhoon Frieda.
great video, your grandparents would probably be blown away if they knew thousands of people would be watching their home video 60 years later
I was born in Seattle in 1962

Love it!!
Thanks for sharing this. Somehow it made me happy and sad at the same time. I miss that America so much. Wow I wish I was riding in that Fairlane with them.
I went to the World's Fair in Seattle when I had to get an operation. My mom and dad were very groovy.
And the music choices on this video is awesome.
I was born that year. I'm loving this! I saw Little Bighorn (Custer's Last Stand) in there just before Beartooth Mountain.
Ah, Orcas and the San Juan Islands. Just a tad when those shots were filmed in '62. Life flies by. Thank you Dale Raymond James for sharing wonderful moments in time.
I rode in one of those helicopters (14:06) with my mother. I think it took off from the top of the Food Circus.
My dad was 10 years old then. Lived in White Center at the time. Miss him.
Two songs come to mind: "Memories" and "Those Were the Days." Thanks!
Wow. what a magnificent video. thank you for sharing- i don't know if i'd ever have encountered Seattle in such a capacity.
I just love it take me back to those days
Back in the good old days
Now that's a kick@$$ everlovin roadtrip!
Thanks 4 the killer soundtrack
Loved seein the tunnel between Grotto & Skykomish..my hood
Great video. I hope others with old home movies post them. What a great way to preserve our heritage. Loved the music as well
Brings back memories of when I delivered telegrams to the Seattle World’s Fair.

I was born in Seattle during the World's Fair, so I really enjoyed this video. Also, killer soundtrack.
So cool to see familiar places but from before my time!
WOW! Love these views of old Anacortes! Great video!
Wow... Thanks John!
Great video and great music.
Very cool.
I was six years old, walking around with my family somewhere in the crowd.
The Seattle Worlds Fair.. ah yes. Not many know that Cessna built a Helicopter (skyhook) and I was able to actually ride in one as a kid. It was a failure for Cessna, but what a memory.
Can anyone share the list of songs that are being used in the background for this video?
Hoping to catch a glimpse of me and my dad, cuz we wuz there!
17:36
A 'turista' sticker.
This car got around!
Yep, they had visited Mexico and drove all the way to Mexico City a year or so prior. I have all that on 8mm film as well!
Fun!
Hey John, not sure you have all your songs listed there. What is the song that plays from 17:10-19:30?
Aahh back in the day when life war so hard and people weren't so mean.
Don't put the 'aged film' or scratched lens effect in.
I was the kid asking are we there yet with these same views and sights. Thanks for the video.
Who’s the artist that starts singing at 17:10?
I don't know...but these folks are "Okies", and surely love their Rockabilly and CW tunes!..Good stuff!

You are special, in that, you have a desire to remember them . Never let go of that feeling.
I was their in 1962 with family and grandparents and cousins
This video would've been so much better if it was just a tad more inclusive and diverse.
Always someone to complain. Its was a family vacation
