- July 27/2022 Summer Hike
Today we are hiking up to Black Prince Lake in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, in Kananaskis Country, Alberta Canada. The highlights of this trail include Warspite Lake, a beautiful waterfall, a high alpine meadow and of course Black Prince Lake, at the base of Black Prince Mountain. The trail is 11.8 kilometers with 733 meters of elevation gain.
First let me say that the hike from Warspite Lake up to Black Prince Lake Goes through PRIME GRIZZLY TERRITORY.
The trailhead is located at the Black Prince Day Use Area. The trail starts out fairly flat and is well defined. Soon you will cross a bridge going over Smith-Dorian Creek. The trail becomes a little wider and you start to go up gradually. At 1.1k you will reach a bench, the trail levels out for a bit, but then it starts to go down. Once again, the trail levels out and you will cross a second little bridge going over Warspite Creek. Now the trail will start and go up again. At 2.2k you will arrive at Warspite Lake. Take the trail on the right side to go around the lake. At 2.9k you will start heading away from the lake, and you will get into some very thick bush. I had my bear spray in hand going through here, and I was playing some music on a speaker. You literally can’t see what’s ahead of you. At 3.2k you will arrive at a boulder bed that you have to cross. There are cairns to guide you through this. From here you head back into the trees again. From here up to the waterfall is the prime grizzly territory. There have been numerous sightings of grizzlies in this area this year. Be aware. Now you will start to get a lot of elevation gain. The area then opens up and is full of beautiful wildflowers, and the trail gets steeper. As you climb don’t forget to look back. At 4.2k you will arrive at the waterfall. I had a nice break to cool off and enjoy the waterfall. You will go up the trail with the waterfall on your left. The trail then breaks away from the waterfall and gets steeper yet. At 4.8k the trail will start to level off again and you will enter a gorgeous high alpine meadow. I was surprised to see there was quite a bit of snow along the trail here. As you approach the rocks at the end of the meadow keep to the right. The trail was not well marked here, because of the snow, I used my App here. Soon you will be entering the Larch trees. You will now have one last very steep section to go up. You are very close now. At 6k you will have reached Black Prince Lake. A stunning high alpine lake. There was still quite a bit of ice on it. I continued along the right side of the lake with views in both directions. At 6.2k I stopped around the middle of the lake. I had the whole lake to myself. I stayed up here for about an hour and then headed back down. Make sure you have trekking poles with you. It made the descent of the steep sections a lot easier. This was definitely my most spectacular summer hike this year. Its not an easy hike, but it was a magical hike.

What incredible footage! For a second I thought you were in Switzerland and then I remembered it said Alberta. I’m from Edmonton, but Calgarians are so lucky to be so close to paradise. 🏔️

Wonderful views!
Ya I agree with you there😁
Oh daaaaaang. That meadow was stunning, and you had the perfect day for it. That waterfall was so pretty, like something from a fairytail.
I think the meadow was my favorite part. I sat there for about a half hour, just soaking up the scenery😁
That is one of the top 3 I have seen. It’s not on any top hikes lists in Kana askis - which is good. Prime griz habitat tho … thanks for the stunning video.
This was my best hike this summer. I had no idea how beautiful if was going to be. I was a little concerned about if being prime grizzly habitat, but I had all the proper gear with me, and I blasted my tunes quite a bit🤣🤣🤣
I just did the hike to Warspite Lake a week ago. We looked at the waterfall off in the distance and wondered what lay beyond!
I was totally blown away when I got up into the meadow. It was tough going but I am so glad I did it.
Thank you for sharing these videos. Your Tent Ridge Horseshoe video helped me know what to expect, just did it last week, amazing experience. I always wondered how you do these quiet hikes on your own in bear country, sounds like you use a portable speaker. When do you turn it on?
Thank you for watching and commenting. I am glad my Tent Ridge video helped you. That's why I make the videos this way😁 I carry a portable speaker and I typically turn it on in heavily wooded areas, and when I have running water around me. I also am yelling hey bear every couple of minutes. I carry an air horn, bear spray and bear bangers with me at all times.
@@LIVEONALBERTA great to hear you are well equipped. Have you encountered any from past experience? I had bear spray and was talking aloud at times, and still worried I might encounter.
I am always a little on edge when I go on some hikes that are not as well known. My friend and I did encounter a Grizzly when we did Cory Pass. We were off the trail a bit to look at the views, and we turned around and a Grizzly was walking down the trail about 20 feet in front of us. We remained calm and he went on his way. I am sure he knew we were there as the wind was blowing from us towards him. It is my understanding that bears are more agressive when they are surprised or spooked. So I make whatever noise I can. I have this video up on my channel, check it out. I nearly shit my pants🤣🤣🤣
I have bear spray but I am going to get an air horn and bear bangers this weekend!
I feel better having all 3😁
