“Hello, I’m HMS Warspite with 18in max belt armour. Someone tried to scrap me in 1947. That didn’t happen. I’m still here. I made Suez more interesting. I made the Falklands more interesting in ‘82, although some bloody upstart sub got the juicy cruiser. Iraq was tricky both times and getting to Afghanistan took some imaginative wrangling (lots and lots of little casters). People keep dropped hints about me retiring but, what can I say, I’m kind of thick skinned… they’ll have to think of another name for that SSBB.”

Dr Clarke again with the alt history where the QE's are even more ultra killy death ships and I heartily approve!

I love this era of warships, somehow they look solid and purposeful, but still a ship with guns rather than the dreadnought block of armour that hasn't figured out it isn't supposed to float.

The pre Dreads are some of the most interesting ships. Often beautiful to boot.

    Good old Elswick.
Talking about RN suppliers, been watching a video on the early years of Blackburn Aircraft. Interesting engineering!
Talking politically charged names, Canada’s first AOPS is named the Harry DeWolf. What a pointed message.

Dr Clarke, love your content (especially the pre-recorded non-gaming ones). However, two not-very-constructive comments...
    1) I can't help but feel there was a missed opportunity to sing something to the tune of "Skyfall" at the start. You so nearly did
    2) please, please, please enunciate the K of "book plug". I do a double-take every time 😂

I believe Armstrong sold 17.7" guns to the Italians, and the RN decided that the same guns in shore batteries at Malta and Gibraltar would be sufficient response.

EOC was a subsidiary of Armstrong Whitworth's at the time. They made the 100 ton guns.

11:16 Yes, but she has less freeboard than a Gato class submarine.

The most successful warships never need to fire a shot in anger. They are, unfortunately, the ones that fade into history as a result.
I've long loved the Admiral and Victoria Class ships. They are clearly figuring out how to build the type of ships that were about to arrive in the Royal Sovereign design after the 'interesting' designs that had preceded them. These are the ships that laid the groundwork for all future (non-French) battleship designs and it shows.

Something that should be brought up is while you point out the fact that it has 18 inch thick armor you do not point out its depth IE how far it extends above or below the waterline.
Something that is important when you understand that there are a few ships with 20 inch thick armor but that armor is only 24 or so inches in height and it’s easy to put such a short depth underwater with too much added weight above design.
