  • ✓ I was pleasantly surprised to "discover" how similar Mauritius food is to Indian cuisine (especially when i saw the samosas being made, this is because Mauritius is a very cosmopolitan island; as well as the indigenous black population there is a mix of Asians, so the food is a fusion of Asian and black creole food.

Actually, in Mauritius most of our ancestors were from India. So yea, they did bring spices, cultures and religion to the island. They did try to create they daily dishes which they ate in India but spices were limited in the island back then. So they adjusted their dishes according to what was available to them. so in general most of the dishes which are similar to indian dish are actually indian dishes but with limited spices.

Pretty much everyone here including the Mauritian talking doesn't understand their own history. There are no indigenous people in Mauritius. Slavery ships didnt just bring African people- though majority were, to Mauritius and other islands on their journeys. Mauritians are not just 'Indian' - we are all mixed and ppl calling themselves just Indian tend to deal with a lot of internal shame. Discover the other dna in you and be proud of it. Finally to be 'creole' means to create a culture out of a mix of cultures. It was never intended to mean 'black'. This was a tool used by colonism for divide and rule- thus we are all creole on that island. The woman may call herself indigenous but you can clearly see the mix of African and probably South Asian in her. Mauritians have been defining and separating themselves by the white man's terms and caused modern day confusion on their own history. I'm very proud of any South Asian dna but i also accept I'm mixed like every single person on that island and because there are no indigenous ppl I'm proud to not categorise myself with these lazy problematic terms and just say I'm Mauritian- afterall we've earnt it!!! Im not saying dont deny these parts of you but please understand that our dna and overlap is complex and very present.

Indigenous black population??? Incorrect. Mauritius has no indigenous population. They all came from overseas.

I challenge anyone who says there were indigenous black people in Mauritius.... and those who say so please check your knowledge in history of Mauritius. let's educate some first, let me tell you there were no indigenous inhabitants in the island of Mauritius....the afro-mauritians are descendants of slaves mostly from mozambique, the indo-mauritians roots are from India and their ancestors were brought to mauritius as indentured labourers, the euro-mauritians 'les colons' as they were normally known were mostly from france and UK, chinese people obviously from china most them were in trade.... Mauritius is a melting pot of cultures and so the mauritian cuisine is a sort of a hybrid one.... it is worth mentioning the that the rougaille, chickpea curry, samosas, roti, pickles, coconut chutney etc have their origin from India nevertheless they have the mix cultural touch of mauritian culture.... here i find a certain Mr steve Arekion and the lady in the video to obliterate or more specifically to distort the contribution of the Indian culture....tnx for your kind attention.....LONG LIVE MAURITIUS AND THE MAURITIAN CULTURE.

Challenge anyone ? Mauritius is an African island, what you learnt in history is what you believe is real, and was brainwashed just like saying Christopher Columbus discovered America, anyways you need to go and dig deeper and research properly
