Bracken's alternate reality experience came across as the River God giving him a taste of what it would be like for America to be invaded by a technologically superior enemy that spit fire from the air in the 1970s, using the trappings of a hyperpowered Soviet Union, since that's what Bracken and the River God would understand. Interesting concept. The land leviathans instead of seaborne aircraft carriers and VTOL rocket jets with flame cannons were sick. The whole thing had the feel of a live action anime mixed with MGS. I don't understand why none of these shorts have been greenlit. Can't blame the coof four years ago. Crowd fund this shit. These 27 minutes must have had a micro budget compared to Hollywood crap. Coming back 4 years later, this is still one of Oats' strongest shorts. The way the storyline uses a lot of the Vietnam tropes in order to make this supernatural being seem more plausible is perfection. Firebombing a forest in order to kill a bunch of "monsters in the shape of men" is exactly what American troops did in reality, they just weren't supernatural monsters. The soldier's story could just as easily be a hallucination from the drugs all of the soldiers did during that war. The way the zombies won't die mirrors the way that Vietcong troops would hit and fade, never giving the Americans an enemy to kill in return, or how the Americans would clear one hill only to get shot at from it the next day. It all comes together so well.

That part where the soldiers (and then the tanks/choppers) float up to the heavens. 2:07 That really stopped me in my tracks. I've never seen anything like that in a film. It works really well. This really deserves a proper full-length treatment.
Everything about this short film captures the magic of the great 80s/90s action/sci fi films that swept me away as a child. If this became a full film, I would absolutely watch it in theatres and gladly pay the inflated ticket price. SPECTACULAR
NOBODY GONNA TALK ABOUT “The Armor of G0D” having bullets 5% the speed of light, a “relativity capsule” to make his senses Super Saiyan and can somehow withstand Reality warp????? Bro when they ended it before they fought I felt so played. “I put on the whole armor of God just so we can stand against the schemes of The Devil” how can u end it there?
These movies work because they are an allegory of our collective experience in Vietnam - the look on Sgt. Hines face at one point in the film was like "it serves us right because we intruded here."
Yeah I think this is possible to read as actively anti-war...the River God representing the ravages of war and the unintended, brutal and horrific consequences it creates. And being a Vietnamese civilian originally, maybe it telepathically showed that one soldier the Soviets invading America so that he would understand what it was like for his country to be invaded and crushed by a foreign power.
The sheer hubris of American calling science creation "Armor of God" and calling an undying vengeful ghost wronged by American as "The Devil", a very Vietnam film. This is CIA guy talking, from the whole context of neutral morality you can see him as nothing *but* bad guy. But if you read further in the comments section and you'll see the usual "MERICAN FUCKYEAR" sentiment.
This is amazing. The first one, 'Rakka', didn't have too many unique ideas. It felt like a mash up of a number of sci-fi classics, but this felt like it has it's own legs, it's own real mythos.
Just make him fix every thing, marvel, dc, anything I'm too tired to list shit but just give the man money and a crew that understands his vision pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
The production values are astounding, but the emotional intelligence of the story this short film tells is indescribable. It's one of the finest works of fiction I have ever seen, and I think about - and view it - often.
Heard Neill Blomkamp is making Robo Cop. And fans did vote on what film to make into a feature, of the major 3 shorts Oats did. And, Firebase won. So there is a strong possibility that this becomes a film if Neill makes Robo Cop profitable. Maybe he'll be able to raise some coin to finish the story. You could finish Firebase in about 15 minutes. Rakka could be maybe a 3 film story arc, imho. Zygote would be freaky, could be a franchise!. But maybe there is a entire story for The River God, the mind of Neill Blomkamp, will just nail.
you wanna see what a Neil blumpkin alien movie would look like? just watch district 9 Elysium and Chappie. you would have seen a bunch of garbage and slums you would see dirty humans, Sigourney Weaver that one south African guy. and some xenomorphs running around.

10/10 WOW! This film was amazing! The line about "Life itself" making way for him was absolute poetry. The dichotomy between the farmer and the soldier was razor-sharp. I even kinda dig how it's set up and taking place during Vietnam as it is a gut-wrenching backstory used to create the antagonist. This film I'd love to see become a full-length feature one day.
That was another good looking free piece of entertainment. It's like the Oats Universe version of the Twilight Zone, short stories and buildup that beg for continuation. Very nice!
I really really love this, I hope this will be greenlit into a full feature film. The setting, the characters, the background story of the River God are really engaging.
This is gonna sound stupid, I drew a version of the River God in '93, high school age. He had his arms out stretched over two men waging a shooting war, one had an AK, other an auto-shotgun. 2nd piece was him sitting over them like a lording demi-god of war/violence with smoke simmering off his body while the two combatants lay dead/wounded. When I saw the head of River God looked the same I got chills. I also suffered from what I call "jungle dreams" being hunted in various ways w/ weapons in this enviro for a decade, so much my gf had me write them out. (was born '76 after Vietnam).
This is possibly the best thing to come from the decision to branch away from the Execs in Hollywood. This is the kind of film I would pay money to go see. You guys are awesome and thank you Mr Blomkamp for creating the best sci fi and fantasy films for nearly the last twenty years. This makes me excited for the future of film. I am fully behind this audience funded studio financing. It makes so much sense considering how hard it was for you when you came up with district 9 and no film has come close to emulating the new direction that you are going in. I cannot thank you enough for taking ideas and making the way possible Hollywood to realise that sci fi is a popular genre and with modern techniques any story can be told. You have paved the way for films like Interstellar, Edge of Tomorrow and The Martian. I cannot thank you enough for bringing a cherished genre to the big screen and making it viable and popular again. Keep up the good work and I know this will succeed, it's way too good for us, the audience, to pass up. Wishing you all the best and looking forward to more great, original content. This studio will become the innovators who are ahead of the curve, Creation is going to be peer to peer, more and more in the future and this is simply one example of how successful this kind of sharing will be. Hold on to your hat folks, the future is just around the corner.
MissEmilovely It is a good short film and deserves its place in the cinema, perhaps with a different program. Why does it need to be remade? You know the producers will be compelled to have "stars" cast to protect their investments.
Playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War Zombies map "Firebase" made me instantly think of this short. I swear the designers saw this film and were inspired by it.
I don't know what SCP is but if CIA Exposition Man had laid out that in this world people sometimes have powers and folks study and classify those people, this would make a lot more sense. As it is we know everything about the River God except HOW THE FUCK bereavement = Dr Manhattan and why it freaks everyone out -- has this happened before or not?

Neil Blomkamp, how long we must wait until movie like this release? Also Christopher Johnson been gone for so long, and he promised that he’ll return and help Wickus.
You will need to wait until Netflix, Amazon, Hulu or some other company with lots of money sees the awesomeness of this and is willing to bankroll $20 million or more to create a full season, or a feature-length film. Smaller studios like Oats are making some awesome shit but they need capital investment to scale it up. Forget traditional movie studios - they're too bland and cautious to get behind something like this but Netflix, Amazon and Hulu are willing to invest in bold, imaginative and truly scary stuff. Let's hope they do.

GOC however, seeks to just rid the world of said anomalies, regardless of how harmless they are. There are plenty of other factions too. More like Neil and his brother are using the clout and income from their mainstream films to experiment with concepts they like and know most studios would not touch. You are right about next gen distribution. 4HD and sound processing like Dolby Atmos means going out to a cinema is becoming the less desirable way to see films.
This has to be the first show I've seen where the weapons, equipment, and uniforms are all period correct. This is usually what Hollywood gets wrong, and it drives vets up the wall-- but someone did their research on this one, and the attention to detail is much appreciated. Good job; looking forward to the rest of it!

yeah I noticed that :) if they had such tech, it would surely be accompanied by a serial number somewhere haha.. so hats off to the costumer, props, and military advisor(s)... they did really well on this one!
On a note for that, military has technology that is about 50 years ahead most of the time. Like, if you are thinking stuff we have is advance, not really, it's a thing of the past, current real tech is like alien to us, but they don't release it on fear of no control and such.
this makes me sooooo angry - from this we can see that there are people who can make good films. but hollywood gives us ghostbusters 2016 and the latest star wars awfulness
@@racistape Yeah I gotta say that exposure part was unnecessary. It's basically giving away a big drawing theme to the audience (what IS THIS THING?!) by explaining everything in a little slideshow. The explanation that he just turned into a real life glitch out of pure grief is a let-down to be honest. But if you want a similar storyline without this issue that maintains the fear of the unknown I recommend you read the Flesh Interface Series (Mother Horse Eyes). I actually came across this in the Interface sub. Filled with strange fleshy apparitions, giant throat tunnels, gross human cross-sections, interesting cubist story-telling techniques, and of course, the Soviet Union, MKUltra, LSD experiments and Nam.
"Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the Devil" Thats was the most exciting way to end this short film. It's been six years now and we still dont have any clue of the current state of Oats Studios. Neill Blomkamp has a tremendous eye for sci-fi. Why are we still here, watching every single one of Oats Studio's shorts? Just to suffer? We still cross the fingers to get this as a movie or at least, a short-film sequel.
This is such a perfect film. It could easily be made into several spinoffs, Sergent Carr and the CIA operative gathering info, Major Brickerson and his boys fighting the devil, Sergent Hines' bouts with Death, the alternate reality... everything about this film has so much potential
I see so many people and movies that influenced Neil to make this. Apocalypse now, Charlie Sheen, Predator, Michael Biehn from Terminator. What an amazing mix of ingredients.
This truly deserves a movie. I think this really captures that old Predator, almost Alien, vibe so well. This short is easily 100x better than the new Predator movies.
And i don't. They are good but i doub it will be as good in a full lenght. Also each movie about other things is awesome, little bit like the x files or Twilight zone. It is short and tells us little and we have to imagine the rest and that is perfect, when movies or series tells us too much...its nice but it looses THAT something.
I can't stop imagining a game based in the jungles of Vietnam, hunted by the eerie river-god who silently spooks up on you amidst the collapse of the very fabric, time-space slippages, psychotic breakdowns pushing you to the edges of sanity and even make you question the reality outside the screen.

How the fuck is the story not good?
001 001 its more of a premise than a story.
I'd say it's a short story. None the less, don't you not think this "premise" is good?
Naum Rusomarov I actually do have a story in mind but it would probably be too boring for them if they would even bother to read it.
No
The sheer hubris of American calling science creation "Armor of God" and calling an undying vengeful ghost wronged by American as "The Devil", a very Vietnam film.
Exactly how I feel about the two. Cheers
lol I totally disagree and think the opposite
this is also a copy of what's been done before. Zombies, vietnam war, terminator, mechs.
Cenot4ph terminator. How the fuck did you get terminator from a Giant flesh demon?
+A Idiot I see where he's coming from, with the unstoppable skeleton killing all in it's way and all. Other than that, not many similarities.
Imagine Neill Blomkamp making a Dead Space tv series/movie..
Imagine him re-imagining the Star Wars universe... that would be something indeed....
Dude what the hell my erection just gave me an uppercut
Just make him fix every thing, marvel, dc, anything I'm too tired to list shit but just give the man money and a crew that understands his vision pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

The production values are astounding, but the emotional intelligence of the story this short film tells is indescribable.
It's one of the finest works of fiction I have ever seen, and I think about - and view it - often.
Best anti-war film ever. Visualizing the rage and depress of the civilians in the war.
Endlessly searching for the elusive VOLUME 2. Rakka, Zygote, Firebase....we’re waiting.
@Yucel Huseyinhan shut the flip up Yucel, you don't know
Tell me if you find it
Apparently, they will never happen.
Still am
Can't believe we lost the privilege of seeing his vision for a aliens sequel!!!!
Voidkvlt Welp we have a garbage person here
UnwrittenSpade Aliens, Halo. He lost so much epic properties
UnwrittenSpade - Yup Microsoft also messed up by pulling the Halo movie.
you wanna see what a Neil blumpkin alien movie would look like? just watch district 9 Elysium and Chappie. you would have seen a bunch of garbage and slums you would see dirty humans, Sigourney Weaver that one south African guy. and some xenomorphs running around.
fuctard3d - what you just described sounds 100 times better that that shit excuse for movie that we got called Alien Covenant.

That exploding face special effect is the coolest thing I've seen in a really long time. Mad props!!
Fire Base, Rakka, and Zygote should most definitely be made with this into a “Grind house” style movie theater event. And the. Released as such on video.
For years I've wondered why Hollywood keep sticking to the1-1/2 to 2-1/2 hr formula exclusively. It seems very outdated in the era of RUclips and Tiktok. I wanted a collection of short stories in the theatre for ages.

6 am here in Australia .. I'm standing , cheering and clapping like a lunatic .... that was so good !
This is wildddddd. Are u serious?

Still waiting for their showdown. The tone is so bizarre yet believable, like MGS3+Silent Hill but in real life.

That was easily the worst part of the short
Back when I was in Vietnam all we listened to was Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys. Fun times was had by all.
Heh. When I was in 'nam, my unit sang Gregorian chants as we marched into battle and wrought destruction with lead and fire.
*Hollywood has left the chat*

Id watch this as a feature length film right now! Brilliant short!
This is extremely well filmed with one small expecting
Everything is clean and brand new
This is possibly the best thing to come from the decision to branch away from the Execs in Hollywood.
Aren’t they now crowdfunding to make this into a movie?
David Holbrook pretty sure you didn't contribute to the crowdfunding lol
David Holbrook; Well said guy! I totally agree.

It is a good short film and deserves its place in the cinema, perhaps with a different program. Why does it need to be remade? You know the producers will be compelled to have "stars" cast to protect their investments.
good god, you wrote an essay

BITCH LOOK THIS!!!!!
Hollywood can go hang itself.
i mean look at any horror movie with good special fx, 80s to now. this short doesnt even compare
Playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War Zombies map "Firebase" made me instantly think of this short. I swear the designers saw this film and were inspired by it.

Amazing !
I was sitting here thinking the same thing as I watched this! Except Dr. Manhattan's got nothing on this god, holy heck
Shit, The River God's basically a Class IV Reality Bender and the soldier's a walking Scranton Reality Anchor. This is basically SCP headcanon for me.
I am just praying this is what this project becomes.

Its practically criminal that this hasn't.been made into a full feature film!
Packs a LOT into the short running time. Everything works, and it works well.
@@msjohncox too underground and realistic for a major deal. Shame Hollywood runs it all. Hence why these short films are on RUclips. Brilliant artwork and storytelling non the less.

We have a SCP report coming out of Vietnam. A class IV reality bender. We need a portable scranton reality anchor and firepower options.
This feels more GOC. The Foundation would've tried to contain it, they're clearly just trying to destroy it.
RaptorJesus I was about to say "way to blow it GOC" before I saw this comment. Glad I'm not the only one who thought that.
Pardon my ignorance, what is GOC?
Requesting deployment of a Thaumiel class entity
Global Occult Coalition, a sometimes-friend sometimes-foe of the Foundation in the SCP-verse. The SCP(Secure, Contain, Protect) Foundation seeks to contain and study the anomalies, resorting to destruction/killing them only if said Securing, Containing and Protecting fail. Because the thing is, "Protect" applies to the Anomalies too. Protecting them from the likes of the Global Occult Coalition, or MC&D, so on and so forth.
GOC however, seeks to just rid the world of said anomalies, regardless of how harmless they are.
There are plenty of other factions too. I mentioned MC&D, which stands for "Marshal, Carter & Dark" a sort of auction-house for the hyper-rich seeking experiences you cannot find literally anywhere else. They sell anomalies.
Then there's the Serpent's Hand(operating out of an extra-dimensional "wormhole station" called the The Library), there's the Church of the Broken God, there's Prometheus Labs..
Fuckit. Here's the website, enjoy yourself;

[RAKKA ftw]
More like Neil and his brother are using the clout and income from their mainstream films to experiment with concepts they like and know most studios would not touch. You are right about next gen distribution. 4HD and sound processing like Dolby Atmos means going out to a cinema is becoming the less desirable way to see films.
Unless you have access to a 20 foot screen at home, the theater is still the place to see films.
Watching this on my 10 ft projected screen was more than sufficient.
hgwells allthewayfrom1899 it feels like next generation filmmaking.

why are these insane awesome movies not being made? Rakka, Zygot, Firebase. I mean come on. Its all freaking gold
This has to be the first show I've seen where the weapons, equipment, and uniforms are all period correct. This is usually what Hollywood gets wrong, and it drives vets up the wall-- but someone did their research on this one, and the attention to detail is much appreciated. Good job; looking forward to the rest of it!
silenthunder85 it was impressive on the authenticity aspect for sure. Even though it is futuristic for it's time, look at the suit they give him. The back of the helmet even has a Manufacturer panel that you would find on large issued equipment.

On a note for that, military has technology that is about 50 years ahead most of the time. Like, if you are thinking stuff we have is advance, not really, it's a thing of the past, current real tech is like alien to us, but they don't release it on fear of no control and such.

Ofc you can find worst than this from hollywood, the output number is not even comparable, thats a dumb argument.

"Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the Devil"
Thats was the most exciting way to end this short film.

Rakka was interresting, but Firebase.... Gosh... like a 25 minutes nightmare. Great Job!
Rakka was decent but this is absolutely steller, I'd be desperate for a full-length movie.
The Dark Side Haha, other way around for me.
Screw that, I want both.
So basically like the FEAR games, but instead of a little girl haunting you it's some old Vietnamese farmer. Sounds amazing.
I never knew I needed this till now.
