I always thought old movies were boring until at work one day back in the 2000s I caught a glimpse of Bette Davis in this movie. She is absolutely captivating and I have watched so many of her movies now. She is the best,

Before the Hayes Code was enacted movies could be a bit more edgy. Bette Davis and Barbara Stanwyck are my favorite actresses from that period because they weren't afraid to take on any role.

This movie in no way should be confused with the book. It doesn't come close to his angst or his obsession with this woman. This movie was only a drop in the bucket. I was literally mentally worn out when I finished the book. I mean this movie just didn't hit the same but that's Summerset, he hits the bone.

I appreciate your response but do not entirely agree. The level of obsession and passion he/ the narrator had for this woman, who barely acknowledges his existence, would be almost impossible to portray on-screen without making him seem like an absolute nutter. Both leading actors are well-chosen and do a remarkable job.

She fought hard for this role. At the time the majority of actresses ran away from the role because they where afraid of being type casted as 'A bitch'..
In her Memoir Bette told of how she would be waiting for Mr.Warner every am with the shoe shine boy and every night she pleaded with him..Till finally almost 18 months he finally let her Go to RKO to make the movie.
I've read the book several times and she did an excellent job.

Such a great movie. Ahead of its time in terms of technique, use of sound, Davis as a bitchy but still sympathetic heroine. Brilliant. I love the moment when Leslie Howard gets his foot fixed, only to use his new found mobility to walk endlessly for jobs that aren't there, in Depression era England. The ending also isn't typical, as the director leaves it unclear whether he'd be truly happy with Frances Dee. Nothing goes as you think it will in this film. Great stuff.

Cockney. It developed as the dialect of the poorer working classes in the East End of London. In England people can tell what class you're from by your accent. So I suppose your laughing face is based on not having heard Cockney before.

It’s hard to understand the praise given this film in the comments though perhaps I am naive to think the film could in any way compare to the experience of reading the book it’s based on. The quality of much of the acting is very poor though some of the character acting is good - but can you imagine a contemporary actor getting away with an accent like Bette Davis’s? Cinema acting could only get better and thankfully has. Also, the degradation and depths of the poverty the characters endure is completely sugar coated. Judge it by the standards of its times I suppose but can’t think why you would call it a classic. If you have read the book I wouldn’t bother watching this.

What a boring, sub-mediocre soap opera. I don't think Maugham, as a homosexual, understood the least thing about true love among heteros, especially given his disturbed and broken childhood and upbringing. His characters never make sense to me and they are often lacking in credible motivations.
