  • AN "EASY" ANALYSIS OF EASY RIDER (1969): the film that defined the 1960s
After scoring a drug deal in Los Angeles, 2 hippie bikers with a gas-tank full of money travel cross-country to Mardi Gras. Their ride starts in the Southwest where they see the American Dream in a man and his family living off the land and a weed-smoking commune, disconnected from modern civilization. Their ride, the American Dream, and the hippie movement ends violently in the Deep South:
"They talk to you about individual freedom, if they see a free individual, it's gonna scare 'em."
"Well, I don't make them runnin' scared."
    "No, it makes 'em dangerous!"
This low-budget 1969 road film written by Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Terry Southern won "Best Film By A New Director" at Cannes for Dennis Hopper, a film based on 60's counterculture that attained cult status by defining its period in the same way that Saturday Night Fever defined Disco in the 70's. This is a deceptively intelligent and well-thought out film that Peter Fonda imagined as an American Western with motorcycles, shot on a budget of $360,000.00 and going on to earn over $60,000,000.00!

Top video mate, I really enjoyed it. I just want to add when Wyatt picked up the hitch hikers and they (Billy, Wyatt and the hitch hiker) stopped for gas, Wyatt let's the hitch hiker fill up the tank. Billy pulls Wyatt aside and states his unease with Wyatt letting a stranger fill up the tank in fear that he will see the money in the hose that was stuffed in the tank, and goes on to say "all our dreams are in that that tear drop tank"
Fast forward to the end of the film when Wyatt gets run off the road and the bike bursts into flames, the final shot is of the bike, most notably the fuel tank burning, I think that this is to symbolise that their dream was killed.

This is a damn good analysis of the movie. When I saw it for the first time last summer, I had no idea what was going on because it was NOT the movie I was expecting in the slightest. I expected a movie about the bikers going on a giant sex and drug binge as they travel across the country. Recently though, I've been thinking more about concepts like capitalism, societies that are normalized and full-on communism. I'm against the practice of communism/socialism as much as anyone else is... a government cannot reasonably just force an entire country's population to all have the same socioeconomic status. But on its own, in the Marxist-theory version of it, it's potentially a good idea, in the same way it's portrayed in Easy Rider within small communities like the hippies. Thanks for dissecting this movie; it helped me gain a surprising new respect and admiration for this timeless film.

I don't believe America's a purely democratic system; in fact, I believe that there is a lot of selective socialism in the way that our system works. Such as the negative connotation applied to socialism when it comes to the poor with terms like "welfare" and the positive connotation applied to socialism when it comes to bailing out the rich like "capital gains tax cuts" and "bank bailout" which are both forms of socialism according to Marx's definition in Capitalism.
Back to Easy Rider. Like you, it took me years to watch the movie as the only impression I had of it was that it was a "biker" movie which didn't interest me in the least. When I finally got around to watching it, I fell in love with it right away, though I did not get the full message of it until I saw it a 2nd time. One thing I wish I'd noted in my analysis is the fact that they were able to travel cross country without using any of the money they had in the gas tank of the motorcycle. They were able to travel, sleep, keep warm, eat, bathe, and smoke weed--FREE OF CHARGE. A great movie that really captures the youth, optimism, and ultimate failure of the 60s, imo.

@@godfatherofcinema Yeah, that's definitely true. I'm by no means an expert on how the economy works and how other countries have implemented their policies, but my understanding is that it's rare for a nation to implement *pure*/true capitalism or communism, in that there are aspects (like welfare or bank bailout) that are inconsistent with the rest of the system's nature. I tend to lean a little more right on the political compass (maybe because I've been spoiled by American privilege) and more libertarian, so I think some government control is necessary but overall I think they should stay out of the personal lives of citizens. But I recognize the supposed nirvana of living in a society free of obligations and personal debt, because of a lack of government or currency, like in the conversation with Jack Nicholson about the alien race. I think it would work better in small communities where the people have more uniform thought patterns.
That's an interesting observation about how they didn't pay for anything along the ride, which further shows that items only have real-world value once you assign them that value. It is weird to think about how something so basic such as water now costs money, but I guess I don't see how any alternatives would be better in our current capitalist culture where money and government does exist.

    • @godfatherofcinema

@@andrewgechter933 If these were the 60s, I would probably be in the counter-culture of that time, though not to the extreme of going completely off the grid to live in a commune. It is sad that everything--even air--is now being capitalized. And the scary part is that we now have our sights set on Mars! Lol. Every system has a built-in weakness and as we are seeing now, Capitalism's is that it exacerbates and thrives on the extremes between the haves and the have nots as we see WALL STREET and the Dow rallying towards 30,000 points in the midst of mass unemployment, evictions, and a pandemic. Easy Rider is one of those films like Spike Lee's 'Do The Right Thing,'; Hitchcock's 'Lifeboat,'; Lang's 'Metropolis,'; and Cameron's 'Titanic' that seem almost prophetic now, imo. There's no other movie about the 60s that encapsulates that time like Easy Rider, imo.

Thanks for watching it, Tim. Like you, the impression I had of this film is that it was simply an iconic biker film that was heavily referenced by pop culture. Took me decades to build up the interest to watch it and only then because there was nothing else going on. I was pleasantly surprised by how intelligent and super-tight the film is. Definitely worthy of a Criterion release, to me. Thanks again, Tim! You may want to check out my playlist for more movie reviews. ruclips.net/p/PLIgQjYndVeTh3WO0Fl9Kf1I4uStn5VNCg

Some great stuff in your analysis . Billys seems to me to be an outsider in almost all situations ....far from being a hippie , I see him as much more like a 1% biker... a part of society but not really 'in' that society ...the commune scene shows that the best . He and 'the drug dealing hitch-hiker' don't like each other , right from where Billy refuses to let him fuel his bike. There's a LOT going on in the movie , for me the music really takes it to another level . It's fantastic ....so fantastic I don't think Hopper or Fonda ever did better .

Good Job Johnny! I loved the film because it would eventually prove to be the sell-out of most of the 60's generation that gave-in to the corporate temptation graft anyways. While the film didn't actually portray that exact replication, it proved to be the same path that nearly all the generation eventually took anyways.

Glad you could put this together I just watched the film for the first time and it really helps the have the themes explained, it ends so fast and hard after the graveyard sequence its like "what did I just see". The film juxtaposes concepts of liberty and authoritarianism, in many ways the themes are even more salient today after the Trump era and the multitude of right wing grifters ranging from libertarians, to overt facists. I found the section in the brothel and the church and virgin mary themes in the drug trip the be an excellent visual motif of how sex and religion are used to keep people ignorant while perverting the things they care most about, while simultaneously and the worst among them are moved to mass random violence. very well made video thank you for sharing.

Interesting thoughts about this movie, sir. I hadn't seen it in so long, I forgot how much food and love this traveling duo get for free in this movie. Did you know that the phrase 'easy rider' was Southern slang that described a man who was the boyfriend of a hooker? He was called the easy rider because he was getting it for free. So they were saying something a little deeper than I realized, I had just seen it as a kind of moment-by-moment, this is the experience these characters had. I think, as you point out, the movie makers are saying no matter what there is eventually a price to be paid. Good video

Hi Godfatherofcinema, I agree with most of your interpretations about the film. Generally speaking it's all about you covered in your video. I guess if you had time to develop further in a longer video your analysis of the film you could reach even more layers of menings regarding to it and the History of Countercuture. Maybe, in that case, relating Kerouac's On The Road to Easy Rider as the book being the beginning of the road and the movie its end.
I also would like to comment that in the Shaking the Cage documentary about Easy Rider, Peter Fonda states that he and Hopper intended to "f*ck the flag with the money" when, right in the beginning of the movie, Wyatt inserts the rubber hose full of dollars earned on the drug deal in the tank of his chopper painted with the American flag. What was being f*ked was all the freedom that flag should represent. So, I guess, in that specific moment, they definitelly sealed their fates that aready begun to be doomed by the short cut to "freedom" represented by the drug deal instead of hard working, just like the farmer did. So, cynically partying with Hanson's money under the argument that he would endorse such behavior just added, in my humble opinion, one more nail to their coffins. The LSD bad trip worked as a cursed epiphany that they lost their way as they turned to be as materialistic and shallow as the side of the American ethos they seemed to dislike and refute.
As Lee Hill put in his book about the film, George Hanson could be, at first glance, labled as "square" because of his white suit and short hair, but he had a much more profound understanding of those times and social problems in America than Billy and Whyatt that sported all that hippie paraphernalia.
Anyway, I just intended to share some thoughts.
All the best from Brazil. ✌
