The Nuke That Went Missing: "Operation Chrome Dome"

- The in-depth story of the Palomares Incident 1966.
It’s the year 1966 and US military planes are soaring through the skies over a peaceful coastal village in Southern Spain. One plane carries four-megaton hydrogen bombs, each 100 times more potent than the atomic bomb that devastated Hiroshima. A destructive force so immense it could inflict irreparable harm on much of Spain, casting a radioactive shadow for generations to come..

We reveal the world's darkest and greatest disasters all based on true stories.
This disaster documentary is inspired by the fantastic "Fascinating Horror".
And here I thought the crash in North Carolina was the only time this happened. Turns out that was just the first, and this one was the fourth. Apparently there were 5 chrome dome crashes, sheer dumb luck is the only thing that prevented detonations.
Oh we had a bunch of broken arrow incidents. Qxir has a video on it. It's definitely the age of nuclear cowboys.
There is also the B-36 in Washington state that accidentally dropped its nuke off the coast near Seattle's Puget Sound.
It has NEVER been found.
Right, "luck" as you call it, was created by the engineers who built the bombs.
This country was built on partial training.
And you can't be trusted with a plastic straw because of the damage it causes the planet.
My grandpa was part of Chrome Dome. He told me he was instructed to hose down the bombs with garden hoses to help lower the radiation levels when they were loading them onto the planes. Surprisingly he didnt get to messed up from it. He did say he had a few friends he worked with that had issues later on in life.
It gets even worse when you realize that this wasn’t the first bomber plane to crash, either - *it was the fourth.*
USA's ability to casually drop nukes on countries is a talent
So isn’t dropping them on its’ own country
I'll have you know we have many talents 😤. That oughta help you sleep at night 😏
Oh they practiced plenty on their home turf.
Which is funny cause everyone is afraid of North Korea testing it's rockets.
Bitch, the US is the only country that ever used nukes in an actual conflict, and that was to kill civilians.
Not to mention how they can't seem to handle their goddamn nukes properly, despite having more nukes than every other country.
I'm fucking terrified of the US when it comes to their nuclear weapons, both because of the US inclination to invading other countries, and their fucking dumbness on dealing with their own weapons...
We impoverish a good number of our citizens so we can better -destroy people- deliver freedom.
It's honestly a miracle that not all the bombs were detonated. It could have been much worse, but the US should have done more since it is their fault and they have a responsibility to clean up their own mess.
You are obviously new to the US government and its crimes. They don't apologize and don't pay. It's YOUR fault when they ruin your life.
If it had detonated who really cares? It's only spain
If the bombs are not armed its practically impossible for them to detonate, that said, the sheer craziness of keeping that amount of nuclear weapons in the air ready to be deployed is just criminal.
The US would rather invade a country instead of properly deal with their own mess.
Even without detonation the nuclear material can (and was) spread over a large area, contaminating and slowly killing ppl and contaminating the ground for decades. They still cant grow the land at Palomares.
And no, ofc the US didnt do more. Over the decades theyve been the guests from Hell, whether they were invited or not, whether pollution and/or nuclear contamination was an accident or not. Sometimes outright violating treaties, that granted them access, right to bases etc under the strict condition of NO nuclear weapons and NO nuclear equipment. Leaving 1000s of tonnes of highly toxic contaminations behind, and if any1 dared protest, just saying "not our problem".
Theyve been doing it for decades all over the world to enemies and allies alike. If its not US soil, they dont give a shit. And treaties dont mean anything to them either, coz theyre the US, they can and will do, whatever the F they want, regardless of their promises and signed agreements.
And this is coming from some1 from a fellow NATO country. Yes, the Mofos did it to us too.
Oh, god, the photo of Fraga bathing at Palomares is legendary for how mocked it was in Spain for DECADES. We used to say that's why the bastard lived so long.
At what time?
and it will be mocked for centurys xD
The picture of Fraga was taken in other different beach. Public relations working at fast speed. Another fake news.
I was about to mention that we’ve lost more than one nuke bomb but somebody beat me to it. Narmatonia mentions the remaining time we’ve lost bombs. We’ve lost more bombs than used. And we’re supposed to be the smart ones.
"somebody beat me to it."
Everyone knows this wasn't the only one.
Good video, interesting and informative, keep the good work up my man 💪
Yeah one got dropped into the North Carolina countryside, it got hung up in a tree. Four of the five countdown sequences had been activated🤦🏿♂️
3 dropped then 1 is still missing in a swamp
@@jtl05 Apparently, tritium decays, and that bomb can't activate anymore.
...Unfortunately, plutonium (the trigger) remains nasty a long time.
There was also a nuke dropped in the Mississippi river that was never found.
But me driving to the grocery store is destroying the environment....🤦♂
So burning down your neighbors house is ok because someone somewhere burned down a whole city? Oof... we have a saying here: He is not dump. He's just very unlucky with thinking.
Another great vid. Thank you.
I appreciate this channel. Thank you.
I remember when I serving in the Gulf with the US Army, we had B-52's come in from the Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.
Thank you for your service sir.

They did the same thing to the 1950s Atomic soldiers. Who are exposed to high doses of radiation during the Atomic Testing out in the Nevada desert.
Everything was fine with them. Grew them some extra chest hair. And an extra arm to scratch it...
We still have a squadron of KC-135 refuelers in Columbus Ohio at Rickenbacker. The 121st Refueling Wing.
No one knows the exact number of nukes the USSR lost.
Sleep well tonight!
Probably a lot, but the tritium in the bombs has to be replaced periodically or they won't work.
So they're just contamination hazards at this point.
@@grmpEqweer Very true.
Even if they can't detonate, orphan sources are quite deadly.
Not in Palomares. The site it is contaminated a lot of years after.
The U.S. is a "do as we say" and not "do as we do" sort of country.
The Fisherman found the bomb by casuality when he pulled up his fish capture. The bomb was wrapped in his net (in a movie, a heroic tough, one leg Blackman bathyscaphe diver, found the bomb...hahaha, Hollywood patriotic exposure). Very famous footage was the sea bath at Palomares of minister Fraga. Dictatorship propaganda of the regime, nobody believed that the beach shown was Palomares. So, one or two month ago, the Spanish President Sanchez was in the USA meeting Biden. The issue with the toxic waste of Palomares came again in the conversations. There´s still today tons and tons of contaminated soil to be removed. For younger people to understand, in the late 50´s and 60´s, the nuclear weapon war tactics were peculiar, because the Intercontinental Nuclear Missiles were not enough developed or simply not in service. It´s not easy send a missile to hit a target half around the globe. So, that´s why this B52 airborne scenario. The B52´s were launch platforms to reach targets because of a limited missil propulsion technology at that time. I thing authorities hide the truth about the contamination in Palomares. My suspect is, first, the contamination is far more grave then they told us, (Plutonium is very toxic) and second, i suspect that they are worry digging the soil out, they hide us the cruel truth. The decontamination by extracting toxic soil, paradoxly can provoque another ambient disaster by spreading radioactive dust, this is in my opinion the hidden problem, they don´t want to tell us. Just thing that Cesium 137 floading in the air, takes only 30 years to deposit down on the ground. Uranium and Plutonium are far more radoactive. For your interest, check all the cancer deaths of extra actors in the John Wayne Tschingis Khan movie. All this horses in the movie spread contaminated soil dust up. This footage Set was a nuclear test area. More then 200 Extra (nativ americans) actors died of cancer. Also is the suspicion, that John Wayne´s cancer was because of the radioactive intoxication in the movie. Really sad that the worst movie in Hollywood history, brought so much tragedy. Dark Records could make a real horror story report with John Wayne´s Tschingis Khan movie actors death destiny. Cheers Dark Records, i love your channel, greetings from Barcelona.

Did you change the name of your channel bc of that lady who's always at the top of the search after searching "dark history"??

@natowaveenjoyer9862 Did we really win though? Look at the blatant far left bias in entertainment, news, academia, the government. The Soviets may have collapsed, but they got the last laugh when they brainwashed the Baby Boomers.

Which one in the US? There were several...
Yeah they brought the waste to The Savannah River Site on the border of Georgia and South Carolina.🤫
Meh. Palomares is about to lose its status as 'the most radioactive site in Europe'. The Russo/American War in Ukraine will soon put an end to that distinction.

Who doesn' remember Fraga Iribarne, a Franco's minister of something, whith the old school swim suit, to prove if was secure to bath on those waters. Thanks for the vid, as always, very interesting !
The bath was in another beach, not Palomares.
Can you do video about El Reno tornado where 3 storm chasers died?
Its always fishy with these kind of things. Its extremely hard to believe they went missing or were stolen. Mostly likely sold or hidden.

Omg, keeping nukes flying around 24/7 for 8 years 🙆🏽♀️. That's beyond ridiculous- it's crazy! No wonder everyone hates us🤣
And you can't be trusted with a plastic straw because of the damage it causes the planet.
If you know anything about anything it was to be prepared for a surprise attack back then. And who cares what the rest of world think about us they can suck it. The Soviet Union did the same thing then.
No most Americans are nice people, as everywhere a few evil greedy SELFISH HEARTLESS STINKERS ruin things for the rest .....
Would you prefer your country being taken over by the USSR and crushed under the boot of Soviet communism? Like it or not, American military might was the guarantor of the free world’s independence from the USSR’s tyrannical designs.
Self-hating Americans continue to be the dumbest mfs around.
Halting Operation Chrome Dome remains one of the worst decisions the US government has ever made.
Communist-made Kalashnikov rifles have killed more people than American nukes ever did.
The fact the US hasn't accidently set a nuclear weapon off on ourself or a freindly country kinda suprising all considerd
I wish I remembered his name now, but there was a SINGLE Russian soldier who refused to turn his key once... and it turned out that he was correct; it was a false alarm. One guy's decision many years before I was born may well be the reason I can type this today. :-O
Stanaslov Petrov is who you're probably thinking about.
I thought they called it a broken arrow when they lost a nuke?
So this is basically the Spanish equivalent of Chernobyl…Jesus.
I’m surprised it didn’t happen more often. 8 planes flying 24-7 for 7 years is a lot of opportunities for fuck ups
It happened 5 times (I think)
Oh Murica..
I’m like 99% sure Spain’s president Pedro Sanchez had a meeting recently with Joe Biden to ask him to clean the area of radioactivity as the USA had promised to do when it happened

I think this is the one thing I’ve heard joe biden do I 100% agreed with
Maybe. It sounds good, but like most government policies there's normally an ulterior motive. Maybe insurance had to cover things and now the government will and probably to a lesser extent than insurance would.
But maybe it is genuine.
I wonder what the taxpayers had to pay or are we still paying for it now, operation chome dome

Yes, they had to be armed first.
Plutonium dust isn't toxic; it is radioactive.
Anything that “poses a threat to human health” is toxic. Plutonium is both toxic and radioactive.

Biden is the best president we've had in a longtime. A nuclear bomb is still off the coast of Tybee Island Georgia. A Tybee Island mid-air collision was an incident on February 5, 1958, in which the United States Air Force lost a 7,600-pound (3,400 kg) Mark 15 nuclear bomb in the waters off Tybee Island near Savannah, Georgia, United States. During a night practice exercise, an F-86 fighter plane collided with the B-47 bomber carrying the large weapon. To protect the aircrew from a possible detonation in the event of a crash, the bomb was jettisoned. Following several unsuccessful searches, the bomb was presumed lost somewhere in Wassaw Sound off the shores of Tybee Island.
the fisherman name was Paco and after the event the people called him Paco el de la bomba , this in english is more or like paco the dude of the bomb
The way the US dealt with the aftermath of this incident is a shame. But at least there are some records of it and the location is known.
The number of nuclear bombs lost by the USSR, their locations and the way they dealt with it is completely unknown. That scares me.
Absolutely unsettling. I'm sure some of these incidents were genuinely accidental, however, nowadays.... it's almost like a predetermined and plotted area for these types of "accidents" taking place.
It's all part of the plan.
Not completely unknown. Soviet Submarine K219 sunk with 32 or 48 warheads on board. So we know it's a lot.
US has about 50 or so nuclear bombs "lost" around the world. That scares me
