Was I cannot fathom about US Americans is their dumb stubborn reluctance to abandon British imperial measurements…. Even though the US has officially been METRIC since the presidency of GERALD R FORD.

Curious about the hole 1 inch from the bottom of gallon jug:
When you stop watering at end of season, would water not stagnate, since all the jugs will have 1 inch of water remaining in them?
Would it be better to have the hole in the jugs/water bottles, closer to the bottom so all the water gets out and absorbed by the soil once you stop watering?
    Thanks,

I tried this way and my plants are all turning yellow 😢 I havent watered in awhile because we've been getting sporadic rain but not over watering. I check regularly that the soil is moist but not wet and can tilt the bucket and see water trickling out of the drainage hole on the side. Any advice?

Sorry I’m a little confused. Do you leave the bottle empty add all the dirt and plant and then fill up the one self watering jug with water? And once water comes out of the protein tub the bottles on the inside are filled?

I'm testing now and it appears to just keep saturating the soil and having to refill the same as watering...

Question? Hi there, Great video and explanation. I started using this method last season. Although my success was not as great as others. I still love the way it works. my question is what do you do at end of season? I live in central Ontario Canada so winter is a issue so draining my tubes is necessary to keep them from cracking or breaking. What have or do you do or suggest? Also what about the used soil? There are a number of tubers who say you can reuse several years of the same soil if amended properly. Last year I just took the soil and added it to my other gardens since I had to empty the containers to drain the water. Thank you for such a great explanation

My self wicking tub garden is going great but when I water the tube, the water coming out the drain hole smells horrible like sewage. Is this normal??

Perhaps there is not enough air space between water level and drain hole?

Do we water the top soil like normal or just fill up the spout and the leave the top soil dry? I live in Arizona and its getting a little toasty lol

You can do both…when I think the top is too dry I tend to just get it wet

So I guess what’s unclear to me is, you put all the bottles in empty! You fill one bottle with the PVC in the top part? If your adding the soil to fill the rest of the bottles then soil gets in through the holes. Wouldn’t it clog it? I guess if you put the water in 1st then you would have a puddle at the bottom before adding the soil🤔 I live near dairy farms I’m going to see if they have any extra bins laying around. Also, if adding plants not seeds, how many would you put in this bin?

I’m posting a video tomorrow so everyone can visually see how it works :) it’s hard to understand or believe it is filling up the other jugs with water until you see it

That’s all well and good but you neglected to discuss what soil you filled the tub. This is critical. Some materials will wick and some will not. You can experience extremes of either a dry dead plant or root rot from too much water . Both result in dead plant.
