I understand the concerns about construction but the way you played and the sounds you made here brought tears to my eyes. I just ordered a Pacifica. Thank you for doing what you do.
Definitely one of the best under rated guitars in that price range! Yamaha makes good stuff in almost every category. I think you're right about it being mostly a matter of advertising/brand recognition.
The Yamaha Pacifica, a go-to pro guitar since 1998, has been embraced by beginner to pro-level guitarists here in the Philippines for gigs, even on TV. I believe in the quality of that guitar. During my gigging days, I'd pay close attention to other bands on stage whenever guitar tone that I like caught my ear. The Pacifica was often the source. A true classic worth exploring, and you can still find it at our local authorized dealer.
Another good video (as usual). A couple years ago, the Pacifica was kind of the budget Super(?) Strat darling of RUclips. But it is AMAZING how many new budget brands have come out since then, and it’s incredible how good some of these new “budget” guitars are. There are so many options to choose from, the Pacifica has been relegated to just one-of-many.
Yeah first they make better budget guitars and when have customers enough little by little quality goes down. An old means of sales promotion. Usually first production guitars are best(budget guitars). Expensive and custom guitars quality stays high. It must😎🎸.
Just a reminder, to put "Review" in the title for search hits! I know it's closer to a "first impressions" but you've certainly done this long enough(as have I) to confidently find the issues which are certainly present out of the box and reveal them to us. Just trying to keep this thing smart my man.
I don't need another guitar so I just listened and watched. Two shirts and long pants in July. Elmo is in one of those Northern European countries. However even when I look up the temperature in Rovaniemi (Land of some of my ancestors), I find the temperature is 69F (21C). I think Elmo's had this one sitting in the "can." I think it's smart to put some in the "can." Summers are short. Nice playing.
Hello Elmo, that's the G string that makes that high tone behind the saddle. There is a pick holder from Harley Benton that you can put between the strings and then it's gone. Or a hair tie can help.
Ah even the mighty Yamaha cant avoid QC issues with the nut/frets etc. Goes without saying, anything bought these days needs to see a setup/tech out of the box from the factory ;) Stellar job as usual Elmo :D -Gabe
I'm a huge Yamaha fan, and it's true unfortunately at least the 112 and 311 series need a setup and even touching up the nut (too high). But so does almost every guitar I had a chance to try at shops.
@pablo963 It is what it is. I've owned several Yamahas with no issues before - I currently love my Yamaha SA2200 that's been brilliant out of the shop, but it's no budget guitar ;)
Hey Elmo. I've been under the weather. Good review. When I worked at the pawn shop I had good luck with them, but they were usually older. I noticed right away that the frets were too small and I could hear the nut thing myself. That's terrible. Hope you're well my friend. Regards from the heartland. South Central Indiana. USA Tim
Once it wasn't like this but lately the yamahas sometimes come out with production defects, I have a 112v and I had to change it. Great guitar however, and not just for the price, it has its own personality
I like the details in the review, not just surface level stuff about how it handles and sounds. I have a Pacifica 112v and it had fret sprout too, no other issues over the ten years I have had it.
WOW!!! THANK YOU, ELMO, FOR DOING THIS GREAT DEMO, AND REVIEW OF THIS VERY NICE, AFFORDABLE GUITAR!!! DANG!!!... [IMHO: I THINK I WOULD PREFER A SMALLER RADIUS TO THE FRETBOARD, AND, THE TALLEST FRETS, OR, A SCALLOPED FRETBOARD, BECAUSE MY FINGERS ARENT SUITED TO LOW FERETS, AND FLAT FRETBOARDS!]
Other than fret ends not finished, and raised frets, the biggest problem I see with budget line of guitars is badly cut nuts. THis is with just about any maker.
Floating a trem block that size is bold. I was hoping the lower tier pacificas had more of a cheaper, chimer single coil tone because I love the guitar otherwise.. My 612 Pacifica has a unique quack, but im still looking for a lo-fi vintage quack you only really find budget strats.. This sounds surprisingly similar to my 612 while clean. I guess that's good on consistency in their line up.
Hey elmo, I have the same guitar in black as my first electric guitar. I never encountered any of the issues you had and my friends who have a much expensive guitars said it sounds great. I am saddened that the one you received had those issues nevertheless I hope this video doesn't dissuade first time buyers as pacificas even the 012s are fantastic bang for the back electric guitars.
I’ve had really good luck with Yamaha acoustics (2-6 strings and 1-12) but bought a used Pacifica and still haven’t bonded with it. But in this instance, if it’s just a nut causing the problem then I would simply replace it. It’s debatable whether they should have put a bone nut on it in the first place (perhaps less likely to screw it up in the cutting) but I would’ve changed it anyways for one or a synthetic tusk.
They use Tusq in the 311 and 6xx series, but in my 311 was a touch high anyway causing open chords to go out of tune. I have a 112V that I'm in love with (changed the nut and string tree to Tusq)
You can always put a padded hair-scrunchy over the head behind the nut to dampen those artifacts -(this is also helpful when doing legato under high gain), or if that looks too silly (although I've seen Matteo Mancuso use them), you can fit a small rubber or cork, or foam strip under the strings just behind the nut, which works just as well and is not even that noticible! Ha.... or you could just get another guitar that doesn't have the plinkies!
Hello, just a friendly reminder that your guitar playing is still quite a bit louder than your speaking. And that's with "loudness equalization" turned on on my PC. You know what you said so it probably seems loud enough, but for the rest of us it's constant turnvolumeup/turnvolumedown/turnvolumeup/turnvolumedown.
Great video, not so great guitar. The same issues you had with that Pacifica are the same ones I had with two that I tried at Guitar Center. One was new, the other used and supposedly had been set up. I kept getting a clinking noise when I would do a bend on the g string. Overall I think the Pacifica looks pretty but they're just not there at least for me.
At Guitar Center they are extremely nice and you can try everything you want, but the set up status of the demo guitars is usually below standard (with all due respect). If you are able to do the set up the Pacifica can be very nice guitars for not much money, especially if you buy used.
I have a question about their necklace like some will only have the Pacifica with Yamaha icon and some with Pacifica with lil title and Yamaha icon. So are they still the same version but different from where they made ?(I mean the country they made pacifica) 1:35

I don't see this as a guitar that would interest me so much. Cheap guitars are kinda fun if one enjoys upgrading and doing work on the fit and finish. My experience has been that every cheap guitar I've had or played has had problems. In contrast, my USA fenders and Les Paul's have never had problems. To have to rely on a guitar not to give problems when playing gigs it's really just fool hearty to piss around with second rate equipment. To think that a $700 US strat pays for itself in 2 or 3 or 4 gigs why worry about the extra cost? There are so many things people don't consider when buying cheap guitars, such as the fact that the wood is not well enough cured and will change for the worse in a couple years, all the little screws are cheap and will continuously loosen until the hole becomes stripped, the switch and pots will inevitability be problematic. Cheap guitars are a lot of fun to toy around with at home but I've watched one person after another struggle with reliability problems trying to play in band rehearsals and gigs using cheap guitars. Another small consideration is that you will never ever get a good price when selling cheap guitars but a Fender deluxe strat i bought for $1000 I sold 2 years later for $1,100. Yes, I know, a long stupid rant
This video came just in time, almost uncanny. I'm currently looking for a partner for my Harley Benton Tele...and I'm torn between the Sire S7, the Yamaha 212 and the Harley Benton Fusion III. Which one would you recommend? Thank you very much and keep up the brilliant work!
Sire all day, my friend. I’ve got the T7 (single coil version), and it is absolutely flawless. You would never imagine that it was cheaper than an American Fender, and from what I hear, the S7s are the same way. Don’t overlook their S3, either. Those are only $399.00, and it looks like Sire hit it out of the park with that one, too.
Sounded awful clean but as soon as you plugged into the Marshall it came alive . I guess that says more about the Marshall than the guitar ? Really it needs better pickups but then so do most cheap and mid range guitars. Yamaha as a brand says that you have not really made it as a player ? (that may be a bit harsh).
That clean was thru Roland cube solid state practice amp, so... and nope, nothing wrong with Yamahas, even pro level players used to play them in the early 90s, so It definitely does NOT mean you have not really made it as a player. Their top of the line stuff is excellent (from what I've heard) and some of their instruments retail for 3K USD, so not a budget brand only either.
