It was a true honour to be able to "share the stage" with Howie at the Port Hawkesbury Ceilidh this summer. He is at the top of my list of all time best fiddlers, not just Cape Breton style either, he is amazing by any standards. Glad you liked the video :) Q.
Thanks for posting this! It's wonderful to hear(and see)some "current" Howie on RUclips. I personally think that he's is tremendously under recognized as an important proponent of "Classic Cape Breton Fiddle"!
What glorious music from two of the world's greatest players. Howie has his own style and sound. He plays reels with pathos and joy intertwined. The first tune I heard Howie play in concert was so beutiful I burst into tears. Finding Howie's music was like finding the Hope diamond in a gold mine. I heard Mac play in Natalie's band and with Beolach and know he's extraordinary and brilliant. The name Bachands was in lights on the same billing with these geniuses. Yes and hooray for you.
You're right, his comedy/variety show is soooo funny, very entertaining! Here he strictly played fiddle with Mac on piano, he is a very talented musician and entertainer! One of our very favorite people!
Howie is playing a set of Strathspeys, Reels and Hornpipes in F major. 1st Strathspey is The Tarves Tripper, 2nd Strathspey is Lord Moira, 3rd Strathspey is unknown to me, 1st reel unknown to me, 2nd reel unknown to me, 1st hornpipe is Fire Away, 2nd hornpipe is Fishers, last tune, a Cape Breton Hornpipe named The Milburn. I hope someone can identify the missing reels.
And in an easier to read format: 0:15 1st Strathspey: Tarves Tripper 1:37 2nd Strathspey: Lord Moira 2:34 3rd Strathspey: Miss Amelia Ann Murray 3:00 1st Reel: The Bonnie Lass of Ballantrae 3:35 2nd Reel: Alex Sandy Skinner 4:10 1st Hornpipe: Fire Away 4:52 2nd Hornpipe: Fishers 5:27 3rd Hornpipe: Millburn Hornpipes are played as reels. Seems like on Howie's second time through Lord Moira's he's playing quite a variation. Correct me if I'm wrong and its actually a different strathspey.

Met him at house party, early 80s at my uncle's house. Top notch fiddler.
One of Cape Breton's finest musicians, love his style and spirit in everything he plays, he doesn't miss a beat and is a flawless musician.
