Use nutserts straight into the guard a bit of threaded rod and loctite so the threaded rod doesn’t rattle loose then drill a hole for the pins... means you don’t have to worry about losing the bolts when removing the mudflaps
I like that that’s great!!!
You shouldn’t really lose them if you’re careful when removing. Good thinking though for an extra bit of sturdiness.
Bend the top of the R Clip out a bit then put a little Zip Tie around the top in a loop, alot easier to pull the R Clip off mate
@@tnt__4x4 I was thinking the same...bend that top loop out.
I was also thinking it would be nice for the bolts to stay put. Another possibility. There are washers that are meant to keep bolts in place without a nut. I believe they are called spring washers. They will get a bite on the threads, but remain pretty flush.
More DIY videos please !!!
Beautiful engineering. Simple, yet functional. Two (2) suggestions, 1. Use a nut to keep the bolt in place permanently so it does not move and elongate the bolt hole. 2. Attached a small piece of string to the clips to make removal easier.
That was a great tip on the mud flap front lost a shit load over the years, driving 4x4s for 45 years, cheers
My 2 cents. Drilling through steel - low speed, pressure and lubricant. The titanium nitride bits will last longer than black oxide. You should see shavings, not powder.
For best result, nutsert the guards, use 8mm stainless hexheads screwed in from behind with the hole for the Rclip drilled as you did, but with extra length to also hold a stainless washer. Bend the loop of the Rclip out slghtly and put a cable tie through it for easy removal and handling when storing. You can try clevis pins, but the hole is always down the other end from the head so they'll be sloppy...threading the bolt into the nutsert keeps it there so the flaps go back on with a one hand operation, and can never fall in the mud or sand.
Thanks for offering something that's not expensive. Always good to save money, especially since covid19 has taken so many jobs off us recently. Cheers
Ronny, a very useful and well made video and some of the comments are useful as well.
That’s really clever, I never would’ve thought of it
One thing I did with the clips on my trailer is I tied them together with cord or put a cord on the end so I have something better to grip on and less change of losing them. Cord pull on individual clips and pins and tied together in a daisy chain fashion on multiple clips. If the setup allows, I tie the clips to the pin they belong to. I used paracord with the 7-strand core removed because it's what I had on hand but I'm sure other types of cord would work as well.
If you're gonna chop the ends off bolts, do the nut up first and you'll tap/de-burr/straighten up the threads when you take the nut off. Plus it'll make it easier to clamp bolts in a vice to drill them.
Feel a little bad that my first ever comment was "constructive criticism" so I will add, that I absolutely love your videos, so refreshing and informative, so real and fairdinkum, and at times very funny, cause I'm so over the commercial crap, with their mock drama that so insults my intelligence. Keep up the great work, awesome video work, not long discovered your channel and have been binge watching it ever since.
Ronny. Thanks for all you do. I have been going over all your content non stop and keep finding useful stuff. Very appreciated 🤙🏼
Not sure if it's an Aussie thing but here in the states when we refer to hardware sizes, the X is read as "by" not "times" as in multiplication. For example a 6mm X 2mm would be read as six by 2 millimeter.
Good one Ronny, quick simple cost effective mod to help keep your car clean and more importantly, keep it legal. Good stuff buddy 😉👍👍
A good mechanic can sharpen drill bits:) Good vid, I like it.
Well done Ronny, great mod 👍
Cobalt bits are the go for drilling, tell Torbs to by the good ones and use his 😂
Hahaha you know me too well
Genius!! Thank you for sharing!
Now that is a easy and great mod, I like it and definitely going to steal that idea. Thanks Ronny 👍👍
Update Leave the bolts in with a lock nut and join the pins with cable ties so no stress with dropping it and losing your shit out there cheers great blog
Worth noting that mounting the mudflaps with pop rivets mean if its under alot of stress , ie being driven over by the car . The rivets will break and wont ruin your guards
Gday Ronny, crackin vid mate, on the back side of the mudflap, before you actually thread the bolthead through, try putting a flat washer and a spring washer on then thread the bolthead throught and stick the 'R' pin in and she should be really tight eliminating any movement in the mudflap.
Run a nut down onto the bolt grind your flat spot and drill hole. Put bolt through mount and run but down then attach mud flap. Less parts to go missing on trail.
I just replaced a torn-off mudflap and now I'm watching this great idea. ARRGGHH!!
This is a great mod. I've been on the fence about chains for a while. I'll be trying this for sure.
Sutton drill bits are the way to go, Expensive but worth it. Oh and loved the DIY video Ronny
Ronny, if you put a nut to hold the bolt in the guard, then you could just push the flap on and fit the R clips, no fiddling with the bolts or losing them, great idea tho
Ronny-he’s an ideas man!
Another good idea by Ronny👍🏻
I love cheap mods, cheers Ronny.
I like this hands on stuff !
just buy clevis pins that are already drilled...
Clevis pons? I’ll have to look that up
Yeah mate. Pretty much the same thing you have done but without the labour :-)
Or you could use both method you have used - use the bolts with wingnuts then drill a hole into the bolt for your r clips
Put a washer on the clip side, much better holding and will better distribute the load on the pins.
Awesome idea! I'm doing it this weekend!
Great Tip! Thanks for sharing.
Great video Ronny 👍👍 I like the mod /do it yourself videos , boring watching the turbo/chip/suspension/tyres/ shockie videos, depends who has the biggest wallet, I may b jealous cause I don’t have much money, ???? Cheers
At this rate, might as well mount those mudflaps via oversized versions of push on metal buttons used for pockets, quick on, quick off.
Thanks Ronny, I'm about to do mine and it looks like I'll do this!! I might see if some clevis pins will work. Some nylock wingnuts would be awesome...not sure they exist.
Had same issue - I used plastic body pins. One tore off on a trail, no damage!
Good idea Ronny!
My 2c though.
Why not just modify the original two bolts to have a hole in them for the R clips instead?
That way you can make them quick release as per your vid and then you could also just remove the clips and wind on the wingnuts for those corrugations.
Because there were only 6mm a bit difficult to drill out as explained
@@Ronny_Dahl Could go bigger though yeah?
May need to drill those original holes out a smidge, but could be done.
Keep the DIYs coming. 👍
Good idea! Thanks a lot!
F****** Excellent. I suggest using a washer under the R clip.
Great idea mate. Have a look at Anti Luce fasteners (if you don't know what they are) Could be even better and you wont have any pins to lose. Just a thought
I’ll check it out
Very awesome idea, but in my 2009 Hilux another config can be done, overall it's a good idea.
Thanks Ronny
Hey mate what what should i choose for my Jeep JL Overlanding setup Toyo MT or Nitto Ridge Grapplers ?
Good vid - Hop you're planning to do a series of quick/cheap DIY mods.
You could tack weld your bolts to the guards so that you don't lose them ... Nice idea though.
Compact push button hood pins look way tidier, easier to use. can get 4 for under $30
you should put a nut in between the guard and the mud flap, then the bolts can stay in and there’s less parts to lose
Love your videos ( I am from South Africa)
If you want to save yourself all that trouble you can go to your local nut and bolt shop and ask for a Clevis pin! Because that is what you made there: it’s called a clevis pin.
Search dzus fasteners Ronny. Used on sports bike fairings. Would be less messing around to take on and off.
Clever idea. Considering last time I was out I managed to run mine over then rip the wheel arch off my tray should really do something like this to sort them.
Instead of pins through a bolt use drop pins, they will hold with pressure and won't rattle it self out as it uses gravity to hold on hance the name drop pin but I remembered try to find one small enough but also good video wouldn't of though of that
Wouldn't spring washer and butterfly nuts be easier? And just keep some spares.
THANK YOU FOR SHARE GREAT DETAIL VIDEO AND GOOD WAY DO
KEEP OLD ONE MUDFLAPS AS GREAT RUBBER OTHER JOBS ON 4X4 LIKE BATTERIES BASE UNDER BATTERY
All well and good until you drop the rclips in the mud.
Why not add a bit of chain that holds the rclips to the flaps? Doesn't have to be heavy chain
Grate idea made my day
You could prob find some rubber to use use as thick spacers / washers to tighten things up a bit...
Aye Ronny it's easier to leave it with out much flaps lol
But then you pepper your trailer and mates following you with all kinds of stuff 😎
@@Ronny_Dahl yeah true mate
Plus people on the highway get stone chipped
And you can be defected by the po po for not having mud flaps
Stephen Dimech plus we all love flaps! 😉
To save mucking around i would tack weld those bolts in place to the guard
The Australian Design Rules tell you what you need as a minimum. Mudflaps are an ADR requirement. All they do is protect ... what?
This video is superfluous, isolation candy.
Protect the rear and the trailer you tow. I had heaps of stone chips and dents on my old tray which was painted. Stone chips can destroy badly placed items like water hoses and tanks under trailers. They actually do a lot from my experience.
Chuck a nut between the guard and flap to secure the bolt. Then you’ll only need to remove the R clip.
A few have said that and it’s a great idea
Dude, cutting discs are for cutting only, quite dangerous to use as a grinder, get yourself a grinding (much thicker) or a flapper disc for general grinding. Also a full face shield over your glasses, trust me,I've had metal embedded in my eye whilst using an angle grinder with proper safety glasses, also if a cutting disc blows apart, glasses aren't going to protect the rest of your face, especially if you are using cutting discs for the wrong purpose (as you were) very dangerous!
I’m an ex Steelfixer I’ve used grinders for 16yrs of my life I know how dangerous they are I totally agree with your comment if it’s the first time you use a grinder... or maybe I’m just a bit old school on safety
*Ronny Dahl* I like your video
Perfect and so easy
Clevis pins, much easier. Although I would leave the mudflaps off unless I'm towing
Nice and easy...
? Hole punch ? - Ok, "Centre punch" - no biggy..
The vice is called a drill press vice (FYI!!!!)
And use a center punch not a hole punch
Nice but my question is what happen to the washers?
Turns out I didn’t need them as I fixed my loose one but left the advice in there Incase you don’t have spares to drill
@@Ronny_Dahl I see thank you for the quick reply keep up the awesome content mate we all appreciate it.
Good Mod
Sticker "sparco" give you 15 hp ....
Wing nuts and screws could also work.
Be sure to let us know how long it takes you to misplace those bolts and R clips lol. Good vid, good idea.
Knowing me I’d say next trip 😂 nah I’m going to try something different a small canvas pouch for valve caps and those bits
Got to see one of those pcor trays in person yesterday, gotta say they're the ugliest tray on the market. Not sure why they chose silver rivets? When the back folds down, it curves out, very silly design.
One of those “rona” projects that you should have probably done a long time ago.
I would use 8 mm bolts and nylock nuts my self ,i recon just a quick and 100 % less chance of falliing off.
Add some O-rings on the bolts to remove the slop.
4 wheeling
add washers until its tight
Nice DIY but why not just buy clevis pins ?
Why not just bolt washer nut and have your drill ready with abit for the nut would be quicker and less fidley
6:19 they're gonna work .........? What is the word ?
"Mint as".
@@simoncampbell5802 So it's like saying "great as mint" ? Haha sorry trying to learn English
Why not put the bolt through the mud flap side, so you dont see the r clips, would look cleaner
I did it the way it is because the Tyres could strike the bolts on some vehicles also the clips will be subject to mud and other dirt. On the back they will stay clean most of the time 🤙
Put the old flaps on the wall in the studio ( or one at least ) 🤔
if you put a nut on the bolt you clamp it securly in the vise
neat idea .. chaining mud flaps back isn't ideal
What happened to the old school file.
Haha yeah nah I’ll leave that in the draw...
Good idea Ronny but why not just use 3 wingnuts instead of the clips , just as easy :-)
I reckon they would rattle off without locktight
Won't lose the wing nuts if you put R clip after, also might lose R clip in sand so take a magnet with you or rivet a string to the flaps and tie it to the clip.
Ah righto i see what you are saying. They would take a little longer to take off but

I do not know english 😁😁😁
QUICK RELEASE DIFFS NEXT!
Haha already done that twice they just don’t go back in
Some washers wouldn’t go astray
Why have mud flaps on a 4x4 tho
Yeeee hawww
Paint them black, they are too shiny even for honest thief
Hey Ronny, Why not use a piano hinge & abungi to hold it up. Release when back on black stuff. Also I used to be in the garage door industry & have heaps of these exact pins & clips left over. Have a look at your garage door motor push- arms. Ask any garage door guy for some.
