Hartford is the capital of Connecticut and the historic seat of Hartford County until Connecticut disbanded county government in 1960. As of the 2010 Census, Hartford's population was 124,775,[1] making it Connecticut's third-largest city after the coastal cities of Bridgeport and New Haven. Census Bureau estimates since then have indicated Hartford's subsequent fall to fourth place statewide as a result of sustained population growth in the coastal city of Stamford.
Nicknamed the "Insurance Capital of the World", Hartford houses many insurance company headquarters, and insurance remains the region's major industry.[2] Founded in 1637, Hartford is among the oldest cities in the United States. Hartford is home to the nation's oldest public art museum, the Wadsworth Atheneum; the oldest publicly funded park, Bushnell Park; the oldest continuously published newspaper, The Hartford Courant; the second-oldest secondary school, Hartford Public; Trinity College, an elite, private liberal arts college, and the Mark Twain House where the author wrote his most famous works and raised his family, among other historically significant attractions. In 1868, resident Mark Twain wrote, "Of all the beautiful towns it has been my fortune to see this is the chief."[3]
Following the American Civil War, Hartford was the richest city in the United States for several decades.[4] Today, Hartford is one of the poorest cities in the nation with 3 out of every 10 families living below the poverty line.[5] In sharp contrast, the Hartford metropolitan area is ranked 32nd of 318 metropolitan areas in total economic production[6] and 7th out of 280 metropolitan statistical areas in per capita income. Highlighting the socio-economic disparity between Hartford and its suburbs, 83% of Hartford's jobs are filled by commuters from neighboring towns who earn over $80,000, while 75% of Hartford residents who commute to work in other towns earn just $40,000.
Economy
Hartford is the historic international center of the insurance industry, with companies such as Aetna, Conning & Company, The Hartford, The Phoenix Companies, UnitedHealthcare and Hartford Steam Boiler based in the city, and companies such as Travelers and Lincoln National Corporation having major operations in the city. The city is also home to the corporate headquarters of U.S. Fire Arms and United Technologies.
From the 19th century until the mid-20th century, Hartford was a major manufacturing city. During the Industrial Revolution into the mid-20th century, the Connecticut River Valley cities produced many major precision manufacturing innovations. Among these was Hartford's pioneer bicycle (and later) automobile maker Pope.[64] As in nearly all former Northern manufacturing cities, many factories have been closed, relocated, or reduced operations.
Aetna and the Hartford Financial Services Group, both Fortune 100 companies, are headquartered in Hartford. Travelers Insurance has its largest national employment center and historical headquarters in the city. CIGNA insurance is headquartered in the region with a presence in Hartford and its suburb Bloomfield. United Health Insurance has a significant presence in the city.[65]
Hartford is a center for medical care, research, and education. Within Hartford itself the city includes Hartford Hospital, The Institute of Living, Connecticut Children's Medical Center, and Saint Francis Hospital & Medical Center (which merged in 1990 with Mount Sinai Hospital).

@@dayand1189 I’m born and raised in Dover Delaware but my dad is from Hartford ct and I lived there for 2 years once I turned 16. Hartford is rough but adventurous all at the same time. Leaning more on the rough side😂only fun if you know the right people. I think Connecticut is a nice state...just don’t move to Hartford if you don’t have to. Hartford is a nice place to go if you need cheap rent and bus lines that go most places. That makes it easy to get around. And the city has plenary of diversity...Jamaicans, Puerto Ricans, and African Americans there for the most part. They have parades and such. There’s plenty of colleges too. I’m moving back cuz I’m 20 now and I’m starting my independent life

Could you film Hartford at night during the Christmas season? We used to go there each year in the 1970s, and it always looked so nice. The Travelers Tower always had a bright white light at the top of it. I can't find any good night videos of Hartford on RUclips. Thank you.

It defines the real English architecture/culture too, a blend of Mediterranean, Celtic and Nordic pneuma/spirits. It offers you that maritime aura, next you need is fresh lobster and lots of Tabasco or smth.

Thank you! My great grandmother used to take me through Hartford on foot to Gfox store. She lived at charter oak terrace. Not sure what happened to that building. It must have been torn down.
I was born and raised in COT D side 117 Chandler street.
G. Fox store is on the right at 4:48. Charter Oak Terrace I don't know. One thing I noticed about Connecticut FWIW: Traffic lights all dangling from wires over the intersection instead of mounted on poles at the corner like most places.
Someone said downtown Hartford was better when the Whalers were there. I'd say better when G. Fox, Sage Allen and other stores were there and attracted people to the downtown area. In this video, sidewalks nearly empty.

Hartford can be rough but if you don’t go looking for trouble it’s a nice city. It’s actually great for people like you who have never lived in the west before. The busses run everywhere so it’s convenient for work and school. There are PLENTY of great colleges around. And Hartford has cheap apartments for rent. Much cheaper than here in Delaware. Also Hartford is very diverse. The city mostly consists of immigrants....Jamaicans, Puerto ricans, and African Americans and they all have different parades and festivals.
Not if you don’t enjoy the daily shootings now and stray bullets! They left out all the crappy parts if this city conveniently! I live one town over- this is such a farce!

I hope that one day, should the NHL ever expand again, we would get the Hartford Whalers back! The only thing is that in my opinion, should that occur, the XL Center won’t be their arena. They would probably build it next to UConn football’s Rentschler Field, and make that a little sports complex. I think that with the Rangers’ farm team, the Hartford Wolf Pack being here, they would either move to M&T Bank Arena in Hamden, home of Quinnipiac hockey, and become the New Haven Nighthawks, or would stay at the XL Center, and be known as the Connecticut Rangers. Should they move to Hamden, become the Nighthawks, and get the Whalers back like I said, I think that they would still keep the XL Center, but only for UConn basketball.

Pawel Olszewski to me Hartford is build more UP... it got more buildings then New Haven and Bridgeport they got alot of close together houses because im from Hartford born and raised and i got cousins who from Bridgeport and it look like u could jump from one house to another .
And in the 1950s and 60s Hartford was the biggest city in the state reaching a peak population of 177,000
