the cute embroidered cardigans are from knock thrice, anything book themed is bibliostyles, and then the vaaaast majority of the rest of my clothes are from madewell (i go hard on black friday every year they have a 50% off sale normally) or thrifted
I also loved Check & Mate and it was such a surprise because I didn’t really enjoy Ali Hazelwood’s other books. It was a solid 4 and I added 0.5 because I actually played chess for years and just love to see female representations here (loved the Queen’s Gambit as well of course). Happy to see you also give it a 4.5!
I find your thoughts on The Winners really interesting ! I must admit, Backman is my absolute favorite contemporary author and I do tend to love anything he writes regardless of the pacing, so a 700 hundred pages novel about whatever happening in Beartown was everything I hoped for. The first book is wonderful, complete and cohesive, that’s for sure. However, if some plot points were not so interesting for me in book 2 ans 3, I felt like they gave us a more complete scenery. Like, hockey is at the core of the city, so hockey IS politics, school, people. And the latter books hit me so hard because the solidarity, the stories, ends up forming such a large ensemble. I had the time of my life seeing those characters evolving and some, including Amat and the Anderssons, were handled so well with their journeys that I can’t blame Backman for rambling about politics and gangs for a bit too long. But I do agree that they heavily rely on the emotional impact and character portrayals that happened in book one ! I would still say that the longer it felt, the more I imagined how dreadful it was for those inhabitants.
they fact that i see your vid just after finishing check& mate AHHHHHH i literally feel the exact same about the book and so glad that i could see someone else review it !!!!!
OH MY GAWD THIS IS EXACTLY HOW I FELT READING CHECK AND MATE!! That book was EVERYTHING! Ali Hazelwood puts some kind of drugs in her books because I literally cannot put them down when I pick them up.
I literally can only listen to so many people talk about certain things and only found two other people I can listen to hours on end talk about books I have never read and may never read. Idk wat it is but I just really like the way you talk about things and your explanations make so much sense to me. Don’t ever change. Thank you for making content
You’ve quickly become my favorite booktuber! I love your silly and cute reactions and just smiled throughout this video. I loved Queen’s Gambit too so the first book you shared sounds so good!! 👀
You have thoroughly convinced me to read check and mate (which i was not ever planning on reading) sometimes a good romance is so nice. Also now i am so excited to read A Study in Drowning and i have it sitting on my shelf waiting for me :) ty for a great video to make my bad day better
quite literally gasped at your earrings in the winners wrap-up. a genuine slay. thanks for your hard work, loved the video! you do non-spoiler vlogs so well!
The Beartown trilogy is my all time favourite )): The Winners utterly destroyed me and I sobbed for 700 pages, I still think about it everyday. Benji is the best character ever!!! (I honestly didn’t notice any comma splice in the 3rd book and I read the books one after the other ahah)
I had had Beartown for a year, maybe couple of years before I started watching your channel and your Nov. reading wrap up made me actually pick it up and read it (I’m a hardcore sci fi girlie I haven’t picked up a non sff book in an *extremely* long time but dear god when I say it was the best book I read in 2023…. You get it.) I inhaled Beartown and Us Against You like not a break to be found, but did take a break while traveling before reading the Winners because Fredrik Backman had me in such a state of peril. The comma splices were extremely noticeable for sure to the point it was almost taking me out of the book and was pretty much my only criticism of the book apart from sometimes it seemed like the author was just repeating his lovely sentiments over and over where in1&2 something might have been poignantly stated in a sentence but took a half page to be stated in Winners… really did feel like the editor was like “hey man. People loved 1&2. Just go ham. You do whatever it’s fine.” A lot of the book could have been parsed down and I’m not sure if it would have been better? Or worse? If that had been the case. Anyway I was very excited to hear you were doing a vlog of the Winners and very very much looking forward to seeing your reactions to specific parts. :) the state of absolute peril I was in from things that were hinted at in beartown and us against you. You get it. Fredrik Backman you’ve taken years off my life.
Another banger of a video, Lexi! Your Twisted Love and Credence videos are in heavy rotation to this day in this house lol. Can’t wait for the next spoilery deep dive!! Hope you’re doing well and staying warm in all that snow ❤
i’m so so so lucky i found you on tiktok, been here for a couple months and the sheer quantity of books i’ve bought n loved based on your recs and reviews is borderline terrifying!! thank u as always 🙏🙏🙏
I’ve really never found another book related content creator that I enjoy listening to as much as you,,, thank you for uploading these videos they’ve really become a source of joy (and book recs lol) for me
God, I found your channel yesterday and I am now obsessed with you and everything you say 😂 the vibes are so immaculate that I did my nails while watching some videos 😂 you got me on your team ma'am ❤️
I haven’t watched the video yet, but Check + Mate might be my second favorite Ali Hazelwood book! (I started TLH before it got popular on booktok.) It’s so well done, and the characters made me so emotional!
Ok update I got the audiobook for Check & Mate and I’ve finished it already, I enjoyed it so so much. I wish I could read more of them being cute and playing chess together 😭
It was the JLA comment for me 🤣 From Blood & Ash was the same book over and over and over ...and over but from the MMC perspective 🤣 I would die for Fredrik Backman. Full stop.
I just love your channel and videos!! Just finished Legendborn and loveeeedd it! You get me through the workday and always expand my ever growing to read list because I know I will like it if u like it!! Thank you Lexi!
Just a note on 'A Study in Drowning', a LOT of the story and character names are drawn from Welsh, so have totally different pronunciations to how you've said them here. Completely understandable that you didn't know, but it you are interested, in Welsh a 'dd' makes a 'th' sound, so Myrddin is pronounced 'MER-thin' (exactly like saying Merlin with a lisp, which is where the name Merlin comes from - it's just Myrddin anglicized). The characters full name - Emrys Myrddin - is also clearly (for those up on their Welsh mythology) a reference to the hermit/bard Myrddin Wyllt, who was sometimes recorded as Myrddin Emrys. Exciting to see Welsh mythology working its way into the mainstream!
loved this loosely strung together thematic ✨experience✨ and honestly it taking two months to happen feels very ❄️seasonal❄️ bc who is getting Anything Done during the winter (not me, I am but a seasonally affected smudge of a person). I love that you loved check & mate because so I I!!!! There is ABSOLUTELY a VERY REAL and irrational possibility that Nolan is my favorite of Ali's MMC's and that's crazy because I really was all in for Jack from Love Theoretically before the beginning of this month. The book was so fucking fun and it is EXACTLY what we needed in the wintertime. I am currently actively reading A Study in Drowning because of your winter TBR video and I'm really enjoying it. Will be back whenever I finish it to watch that video section bc I know there aren't any spoilers but I'm one of the sickos who will glom onto even the vaguest spoiler so I must abstain. Finally I *almost* bought that exact New Yorker puzzle from the bookstore so I'm glad I got to live vicariously through you for 10 seconds. saved this video as my little treat for the end of the day 🫡 thank you for sharing and motivating me to pick up one of the 5 books I'm reading rn.
Just because it's you, Lexi, I like the video before even watching it. You're the only person who I can watch do a reading vlog. Also I think you'd really enjoy Cloud Cuckoo Land. I absolutely loved it and I think it would hit just right for you.
is this a safe space to confess i occasionally (frequently) revisit lexi’s channel to put on the same videos in the background while i cook or do chores
Beartown is such a fantastic book and i completely agree. Book one was phenomenal 10/10. Book two was great 4/5. Book three? Did not need to exist but because i am a beartown fan through and through i still enjoyed it. If beartown has one fan, its me. If beartown has no fans, i am dead.
I'd love it if you read/summarized the All For The Game trilogy! I haven't read Beartown, but they sound vaguely similar (and by that I mean they both have sports and trauma). Idk what's in these books, probably crack, but they're so good, yet objectively cringe in a fanfic kind of way? I didn't know original works could capture that very specific energy, but it somehow makes it work. I love it unironically though, and that's what really matters😌. The series is crazy entertaining and crazy short (I read all books in about 2 days) so I highly recommend it!
lexi, if you haven't had a chance to read The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw - it's a really short, gorey fractured fairy tale that will move into your brain like nothing
check & mate has been on my list for a while but you have DEFINITELY convinced me to read it this year!! im still on the fence about reading Bear Town since you said the last two books were repetitive, but Anxious People was my first 5 star read this year so i might have to read at least the first book because i just adore Backman's writing style as well 😩

You're probably not seeing this since its been a while you posted this video, but the Winners also felt differently translated to me in the German edition I read, which leads me to believe maybe the author wrote differently? Als this books took me 14 months to read, It did not have to be that long. : D
if you’re looking for any podcasts i’d like to recommend archive 81. its what inspired the netflix show, but the podcast gets so much deeper. so much of the charm and life of the story was lost in translation. it can get pretty disturbing to listen to at time (mostly season 3 but season 2 has its moments as well), but i know you mentioned the show in a different video so if you liked it, or even just found the premise interesting, you should check it out!
have you ever read the house of salt and sorrows? i just finished it, and i feel like it could totally be your vibe. for reference my jaw actively dropped a dozen times in the final 20% of the book
the downfall of Check and Mate for me is that I actually play chess and it was frustrating that there's no actual chess playing in the book. I was waiting for it to happen, my brain needs the AHA! moment where I understand how good GOOD Nolan is, how exceptional Mallory is but it's just implied. And sometimes people comment on it.. vaguely and then the ending?? you don't actually have a moment where they play each other aslkdjasldjalksjdklajsd NO! anyways those cloud earrings are amazing!
yes i do think this is valid HAHA i got more and more upset as time went on that the book ended right before their last match...but it still ate 😭 i can't help it i am a simple woman
welcome to this new challenge i call “winter” its where i make it through every day of winter (and read book) 🙏
too real 💀 baby steps
“I love it when men lose” is such a relatable statement❤
You know what book would really fit this theme??? Credence… because they have to stay in the mansion during the winter. Sounds perfect to me.
did u see her video about it, its great
@@ginnluv yes that’s why I was being sarcastic
@@mauratyson9580 alright not too much now
This was literally my first thought LOL 😂😂
i will never be free
The reactions to check & mate were so amazing
Ariana what are you doing here😭
!! ms. haley i love your stuff, thank you for being an incredible inspiration 🫶
what in the universe crossover of the century
I agree with you about Ali Hazelwood. Normally contemporary romances just annoy me but her books actually make me giddy
Check and Mate is SO GOOD. The tension between Mallory and Nolan was just 😙🤌
Day 2 of asking for a closet haul specifically of your cardigans/sweaters bc I need to know where you shop please and thank you Angel

your giggilng to the romance is literally me reading any romance, specifically nick and bree in legendborn
