- Hey guys!
This time we are looking at the huge natural saltwater ecosphere again. This ecosphere is turning out to be really successful, that's quite rare for a saltwater ecosphere. The crab is growing quite large as well and seems very healthy. The polychaete sand mason worm turned out to be a spionid worm. It's amazing what we can find in just one ecosphere. I really like this closed ecosystem so far!
Enjoy!

I just realized this was actually the 3.5 month update.... oopsie
Hey where do u buy those jars
Life in Jars? Are we getting a year update
you forgot about the starfish.
I NEED A YEAR UPDATE. IS OUR BOY ALIVE?
I think you can edit the name of the RUclips video
honestly i am surprised considering how much care it takes to manage a salt water aquarium i thought it would die but no. I am impressed
I'm really impressed as well.. thanks for watching!
yes since when its proven that refusium solves al salter water problems so its eazy these days just ad (refusium) filter/ nitrate problems solved if you not have to many fish
And what about salt comes to the floor? Dont u need a flow or something like this?
I'm not surprised at all as it is a sealed unit the salinaty is self regulated but I am surprised about the crab tho
where should the colour come from?
Life In Jars: Here’s my update
Crab: Here’s my ass
When I was in jr high 1988, we went snorkeling in summersville lake in wv and believe it or not there were tons of quarter size jellyfish in freshwater. A year later I had biology class in school, my teacher bragged on discovering and naming two kinds of freshwater invertebrates, I told him about the jellyfish and he said I was lying, right in front of the class, it was horrible. This was before Google so I couldn't prove it but I thought about the incident a couple years ago and sure enough, there is a small freshwater jellyfish in Appalachia that sometimes appears. Hope that SOB found out about them and felt bad but I doubt it.
Really nice that you found freshwater jellyfish. Really weird that your teacher didn't acknowledge it...
I also found freshwater tiny tiny jellyfish once! It was in a moat around a castle, and the water was supposedly 90% freshwater and 10% salt water. Everybody told me I was lying, but I know damn well what I saw.
the only known freshwater cnidaria is hydroids... it is possible that a new type of jellyfish has been acclimating for freshwater which is interesting after all there is still some un discovered animals on the ocean.
1988 not 1998, sorry I must have hit the wrong key.
Once while saltwater fishing in Tuscany, Italy, I caught a very strange looking jellyfish with a yellow orb inside them and what looked like veins spreading from it, never seen it after, but me and my family will forever know it exists, unfortunately it was before cellphones were widely spread so we never took a photo of it.
The sea is still hiding many secrets!!
"This boy is turning into a big boi"
A Big Boi indeed
To date my favourite scientific conclusion of all time.
Super hot fire
I want these succulent bugs and algae spread across my nude hairy body

Life in Jars, beating the odds since 2017 xD
Hahaha totally
5 month with sea water is HUGE, not to mention fully closed!
Yeah it actually is. Haha
Sir, you have a cool accent and if I had a nature show, you would be my narrator.
Haha thanks that's good to know
Yup
Let me know how that goes!
Not enough crabs for a proper crab rave :(

Hahahaha that crab was like "hhhhhheeeeerrrreeeee i COMMMEEEEEE! LOOKATME!" 😂 nice update, been waiting for this :p hope all is going well
Thanks for watching! Yes I'm doing fine thanks for asking!
@@LifeinJars glad too hear! Keep us updated on all of your experiments 😂 - impressive indeed that your crab is thriving, great news!
This is now one of my favorite closed ecosystems. I have been studying how to create more sustainable tropical like ecosystems but I haven’t thought of salt water before. I can’t get over the variety of life that jar contains, the crab is very impressive. This inspires me to do more research on closed salt water ecosystems, I am very happy I found this video. Amazing job!
super cool. your adopted crustacean son has grown up so much. what a big boy indeed.
this system is totally thriving
i find it so crazy how even saltwater closed systems can thrive with no input just like a slice of nature.
i have an aquarium and im putting a snail and some shrimp and a fish in it, and obviously i will look after them DILIGENTLY
if they die im gona be really sad because ecospheres u can just scoop them up and leave them and they thrive... 😂
but i am taking some tips from nature in my aquarium... im using natural sunlight and allowing algae to grow. i have added lots of plants and a moss ball and dead leaf litter and some wood. im hoping the snail and shrimp will enjoy eating the algae, and to a lesser extent the fish waste, which the plants and algae will also eat... and neocaridinia shrimp breed pretty prolifically, the babies will enjoy the biofilm and infusoria and stuff, and the fish may snack on some of the babies...
i am using a filter, and plant fertilizer, and i will be feeding the fish, as well as changing water so its by no means a natural aquarium
but nature does kinda know what its doing with these critters so im trying to listen to it a bit!
oops i rambled. the important thing is nice video, and nice sea jar!! x
I really like the idea of a natural looking aquarium! Thank you!
I would so love to see crabs in nature, I love watching them for some reason. That and small fish and shrimps. I’m not sure why at all. But it’s very therapeutic for me.
You need to move to the coast or to an island. Half of my childhood was spent playing with crabs. I even managed to catch a spider crab in a rock pool that was big enough to eat.
smol crabs are adorable
Can I just say thank you for keeping us updated on this? I was so worried for the little crab but despite chancing his life on the success off this ecosphere, he seems to fairing rather well and that makes me really, really happy. I've been following this ecosphere since you first uploaded and I'm so excited about all the progress it's made. Out of almost all the videos I've run across on RUclips for these things this has got to be one of the most thriving ecospheres yet. Poor little crab must be a lonesome little thing though. :(
No problem! Well crabs are really territorial and aren't intelligent enough to feel emotions like sadness, so don't worry about it too much
Life in Jars? Whoa, who are we to say crabs can't feel emotions???
_science_
Frik
I love your videos! They are very funny and educational at the same time!
Thank you that's great to hear!
That crab was like "here comes the main protagonist of the show!" X'D
(I want a pet crab :"))
Sorry for comments on old videos but we just discovered this channel recently and are fascinated lol. Love listening to him talk too, soooo soothing
This is awesome! It looks so diverse! I noticed the sand is much darker at the bottom as it is compared to the top? Organisms are aerating the sand above but the sand below is not aerated so is home to a lot of bacteria! Do you think your crab keeps the ecosphere clean and helps ventilate the water when it moves around? I've never seen such a diverse ecosphere! You have life in all shapes and sizes within this.
My ecosphere is nowhere near as impressive as this as my prawn hunted most of the interesting microfauna, thick hair algae is everywhere and it now has barnacles taking over the glass... lol. Thanks so much for these videos I love them keep up the good work my dude
I think the sand is just lighter because of the lighting I used actually... It could very well be the case that the crab eats rotting algae and is keeping the ecosphere clean.
Is your ecosphere salt or freshwater?
@@LifeinJars Fair enough haha! And mine is salt water and the sand and water was collected from Liverpool in the UK.
@@mitchl5220 do you have a video it would be very cool to see 😊
@@brianasheffield45 I wish I did :( I can describe it though! It's basically a 8l jar with sand and rocks. The sand is home to bacteria which turned all the lower part of the sand bed dark/black and there is a higher layer which is clear due to there being hundreds of small burrowing snails and worms that aerate the sand at that depth. The rocks are covered in thick string algae and so is some of the glass. The animals within are hundreds of tiny snails, worms, gammarus, isopods, copepods, some kind of limpet, 1 prawn and now barnacles which are growing over all the rocks/glass.
Although it's stable unlike the first time I attempted this it still feels like a partial failure as I have learned that the prawn ferociously hunts any small inverts it can see so my jar is mostly still and lifeless other than snails, the prawn and the occasional small invert whizzing around that is brave enough to leave the algae. Also the barnacles taking over has worried me because I think they will take over the glass at some point and make it look really ugly. On the bright side though it's an educational experience and I know what to avoid next time! haha
I think it's actually very cool that you have barnacles in there
Your one of the few people that do saltwater ecoshere i also have a 2 gallon salt water ecoshere that's 1 year old
i am fascinated...wondering about the starfish? will check next update?...thank you LIJ,
Bro I love your sarcastic commentary, it’s brilliant.
Keep it up 😂🤣
HOLY shit, u just saved a Aquarium loving student from the pain of not having money for the hobby!:)
These videos are helping me relax tonight, I'm currently scared Bout dying from my disorder and this is helping empty my mind
this channel is where I go to clam down c:
I'm glad I can do that for you
Mayby a stupid questions but was you typing clam intentional?
Clam?
Literally just found your channel. Watched the initial Seacosphere video, then watched the update, watched what that guy Dustin Pak was all about and then... you literally upload an update while I return to your channel to check out some more of your stuff.
Talk about an uncanny coincidence! Interesting stuff. Good to know that the ocean is so easy to handle by just scooping up some stuff into some jerry cans, I'll try this out for sure.
Haha that is a weird coincidence! I hope you'll enjoy some of my videos and welcome to the Jarmy! Most of the time saltwater ecospheres will fail I'm afraid...
Not only do I love your explanations, observations and work in setting up the ecospheres, but I laughed out loud at your commentary this time. Thank you for your videos!
Thanks for watching!
I’ve just been pointed in the direction of your videos and I absolutely love them!!! Thank you!!!
This channel is so calming
Thanks
I have been scrolling through the comments you respond to allot of them, and that's something I can respect love ur vids keep up the grind
I try to respond as much as I can. Thanks!
Your videos are so cool, they always have a calming feel to them. Keep doing what youre doing!
Thanks!
02:56 it’s a skeleton shrimp, a type of amfipod that clings to algae and catches tiny animals for food. They can get up to 3 cm in length!
i cant stop watching
I knew it was possible to make a saltwatter ecosystem, I hope you continue making videos like this
I hope so too
Excellent crab discipline
I love everything about this channel and your accent
That part where the crab walks into the shot tho XD
Maybe I missed it, but what happened to the starfish?
I was thinking the same thing...
Rip patrick star
The starfish man! The starfish!
Aw shit it got ate
He ate it for protein
This is a bodacious ecosphere, I hope to attempt it one day
I'm just watching a worm wiggle about while jazz music plays and there's no place I'd rather be right now.
Your videos have inspired me to try my own, I've just purchased a decent Mason jar and going to try just mud and a plant or two from my local lake and see what happens!
Just started my own freshwater ecosphere, I'm really excited to see how it turns out.
Cool!
@@LifeinJars So far I've found Amphipods, all sorts of snails, an earthworm, those white blob worm things you talk about, and really small worms that go absolutely ballistic when they're halfway out of the mud.
Thank you for inspiring me to make one of my own.
My dude, This is quite cool indeed. I just moved to Katwijk so I'll try making one of these when things get a little warmer.
Cool
Holy crab 🦀 btw I really love your channel. The way you explain things makes it really easy to understand. Your commentary is funny. I discovered you a couple weeks ago and I've watched all of your videos and I'm very excited about the future ones !!
Thanks! I'm very excited about some of my future projects as well!
so calming to fall asleep to
Dont know how i got here but impressed. Thanks for the content.
Thank you sooo much - this is fascinating. when i was a kid we had a pond and the life in that pond was amazing. the only thing that scared the heck outta me was i went to catch a frog and it slithered away. the only water snake i ever saw in that pond. we also had teeny tiny toads in the spring jumpimg in the grass around the pond. anyway, thanks much :) 🦐🌱🦀🐢
It was cool seeing the crabs again
Its just amazing how you can get this ecosphere. i was follow your videos since 3 months cause i saw you in recommended videos. even i can heard english perfectly i can understand you so good. im from venezuela. keep making this amazing job.
I'm glad you stuck around then!
Thank you for another great video, for Christmas I ordered my 5 grandsons Grow your own Triops along with other S.T.E.M toys.
Cool! And thank you for watching
Holy crab! 🦀
I love how it's taken 7 months for people to realize the starfish wasn't in the video...
Ok so I’m quite new here and when I heard ‘jarmy’ I spat my coffee everywhere
I really love this, I'm amazed how well the crab is doing as well. I wonder how big he's going to become in this small ecosystem!
Not too big hopefully. But as I said this species doesn't get too big anyway
This species of solidified algae......supercalifragilisticexpealidocious.....
Edit: I love your narration and I couldn’t say that word let alone spell it if my life depended on it!
Inspired by your channel, I tried to do a seawater ecosphere in a 2L bottle 4 months ago. Only took sand, pebbles, an algae and a tiny species of crab. I sealed the bottle and put it it the sun in my garden. The crab died in 3 days only and 2 weeks later the algae started to turn yellow. All hope was lost ;( .1 month later a detritus layer formed on the sand(maybe from bacteria and fungus). I thought this was the end. I put it in another corner and left it there to die(the corner was in the for only half of the day while the other was in constant sunshine). I almost forgot about it. Some days ago I looked at it again. It was unbelievable the algae survived and a new species was now blooming. I also spotted some white dots moving about. Do you think those are tiny crustaceans?
Yup those are definitely little crustaceans. Leaving an ecosphere in direct sunlight is a very bad idea, as it heats up really fast. Very impressive that it managed to revive though!
Thx LIJ, for the info but it's you who encouraged me. And yeah how to know if there are tiny worns?
lol... he have a healthy growth of algae so the crab didnt die for it.. your crab probably died from lack of oxygen...
Congrats you cooked your ecosystem in the sun.
@@emmaritzy627 I had
thats insane its still alive
I know right?!
well i guess the phrase "Life finds a way" -guy from Jurrasic park is correct
It really is
My goodness you just bred a crab. The next thing you know some zerg-thing will start evolving inside. Wow. Simply wow.
After seeing so many ecospheres fail in other videos, this is very nice to watch :D
I'm very surprised, I would imagine that it would be near impossible to keep a saltwater jar like that stable but I guess not.
Watched your videos when you barely had any subscribers, I am very satisfied with how you are doing
Thanks for sticking around all this time!
Crabtastic! I love this video!
"It's really special,holy crab" 😂
Absolutely love the feel of your videos, keep it up my dude
Thanks Samuel!
Crab footage + smooth jazz
You should give the Crab a Name!
It was a HUGE update, ahh missed opportunity :) great video!
Haha I have to calm down after all of my spring ecosphere videos
Think I'll make one as an experiment once it warms up again
You should
This has soothing mr Rodgers vibes...
This is amazing! I'm planning on creating my own saltwater ecosphere, but I'm not sure if I'll use the right amount of each components. I'm guessing it's a trial and error process! Are there any tips that you can give?
Everytime I go back to these videos I'm reminded about how many plants I killed in my early days from over-mothering them to death yet clearly nature knows what it's doing! I'm still impressed that our dear friend Mr. Crab lasted so long
I’ve never seen a saltwater eco jar before, pretty cool!
It is pretty cool!
3:15 that really surprised me tbh
like i was all fasinated with the small things and this huge thing just came up
im not going to sleep through this one! so excited!
Haha hope you like it
holy crab!
That is a really cool crab
Got yourself a new sub! :) This is awesome!
That's amazing! Great video!
“That. Or it’s an alien.” You are hilarious!
Thanks :)
How did I get here and why am I so fascinated?
What a great channel, subbed!
Cool the crabs still alive
Quite insane
That crab walking i n like oh boy I can't wait to be in a vid
Did this same thing a few years ago and it was thriving for about 3 years before all the plants got eaten and then eventually everything died.
That thing was probably an alien...
Fortunately, it is contained.
Let’s hope it does not turn into a situation like Venom, I would rather not have simbiods eating me
Yeah me neither
it will brust out from your chest...
I am an aspiring biologist and I find your Chanel fascinating. I would love to start an ecosphere but I don’t quite know what to do to make it last. What exactly do I need to do to start a simple ecosphere of my own?
Edit: Typos
Think about what an ecosystem needs and try to provide everything in the ecosphere. Plants/algae, animals, micro-organisms etc.
Have you tried building one of these from a polluted source? Like the inner habitat and terrain are the garbage in the water, like bottles and cans. See what takes hold?
I did a closed ecosystem with some dirt, some grass, and moss in a pill bottle. It sustained it's for a whole month, which surprised me.
Cool
Holy Crab love it!
“This boy is really turning into a big boy”
Really lovely as always
Thanks
You know some crab species can live 20 - 30 years. lol
Big crab booty rocking up the place
What music do you play in the background?
Really interesting video again 👌
thats so cool and you dont have a bad type of algae either.. i have a saltwater tank that i shut down because of bad algae problems.. but i do have an anemone jar :D its a curlique anemone on a jar its still alive and its been a month since i put it on my jar..
That's actually pretty cool
Life in Jars? its on my channel you can check it out..
Idk why but I wanna see a closed ecosphere with brine shrimp. I just love shrimp
Nice job - starfish?
Who else misses the starfish
Well done.
Thanks
Awesome video thank you :)

Might just be a jar of water and random stuff but it's still better than watching the Kardashians.
thank god you're back
