Another great process video. I've learned that the most common place I pick up warps is right at the junction at the tip of the handle that goes into the oil late, or sometimes not at all. I recently upgraded my quench tank to a vertical 2.5L stainless steel milk tank so I can hopefully get all the blades, even the larger ones entirely submerged right away without having to fiddle around with it, plus have some room to oscillate them around a little which I've heard helps. I was using a stainless steel sheetrock mud tray which worked decent but I could never get the entire blade in there fast enough and then I had gotten one of those ammo containers from Harbor Freight like yours and mine was leaking so I just cleaned it out and used it to save handle scale cutoffs to use as inserts on some multi-piece scales I want to explore soon. Keep up the great work!
matt i ordered the LB 22.5 with quiet drive SSR , and tap control december 11th 2022 and it was delivered this past monday 2/6/23.i still cant believe how fast it came .,especilly when website said 24 week turn around . i ordered from kiln frog. i have alot to learn with this oven but im gonna love it . much better than my homemade oven which works great.😀 its my new tempering oven now i guess lol hope you do another build along Mark😀
Does your have coils in the back? We ordered ours at the same exact time basically. Mine was ordered Dec 5th,2022 and it came 2/7/23. I ordered safety shut off and it didn't come with that and no coils in the rear. Wondering if ours got mixed up
Hey partner,, thanks so much for your time and dedication to putting out great, no I’d say the best videos for actually benefiting us who are trying to get to your level of craftsmanship in the knife making venture!! Believe me , we’re thankful!! All I have is a one burner forge that I built , and it does ok for high carbon blades but that’s about it!! I really need to up my game to include more steels , stainless and tool steels but since I just got my 2x72 , it’ll be a while before I can get an evenheat like yours !! My problem is warpage !! I use my vice and 1/2 in dowel pins to deal with the crooks and bends !! I have a question if you got time , sorry for the long text, after heating them in the forge and tempering the final step, does it change the hardness of the finished blade , to add heat to help in the straightening process?? I just use a small propane bottle but I don’t know the temp of the flame. It doesn’t seem to change the sound of the file sound when running it across the blade!! Again , sorry for the long text !! Thank you
We both have a very similar set up. -New Jersey Steel Barron / Alabama Damascus steels -parks 50 in an ammo can -aluminum plates after quench The only thing I’m missing is that Even Heat! I’m still trying to get by with heat treating out of my forge. I also had a heat treat day today and now I’m left shin tempering more then half of my batch.
A few things I noticed, isnt it bad to let it cool too much before tempering? Like below 120f I heard is not good. And doing multiple blades you are letting them soak a long time, isn't that bad for decarbonization?
I'm curious, do you not run normalizing cycles on your blades before quenching? Even though I pretty much only do stock removal I always run 3 thermal cycles to relieve any internal stresses and shrink the grain.
So I don’t with my normal steel blades, I do on my Damascus though. I’ve talked to a few people about this and have come to the conclusion that it’s kind of a waste of time with most stock removal blades.

A preheat temp hold apparently reduces the chances of warping. Do you have a sub zero setup. I’m probably going to go with dry ice and isopropyl. Have an LB 18 on the way.

Aslong as the shim temper isn’t over the initial temper temperature your fine!

Dang!!! Well so far I’m extremely pleased with this oven! Took almost 10 weeks to receive it but well worth the wait!!

Yea I tried to do 9 blades one time and spent way to much time shim tempering, less learned 👍🏼🍺

Why did you heat treat before grinding the bevels? I am confused wouldn't the bevel grinding after the heat treat ruin the heat treat?
Not if you keep the blade cool during grinding

How much does your Evenheat unit effect your electric bill? Would like to get one, but it seems like it would cost an arm and a leg to run.
Almost not noticeable in the bill. I do big batches at a time ( 25 knives) so it only runs for one day a month roughly

I make sure the oil is around 100 degrees
I used a very large amo can and installed a 120v water heater element and inkbird temp control. Works well and safe
