I would slightly disagree with the idea of Katsura's development being flat through the series. A lot of arcs throughout the show involve him going undercover in enemy territory or meeting people who are against the Joui cause. He meets Ikumatsu and learns how she was personally affected. He works in the Amanto seafood restaurant and ends up protecting Amanto from Joui patriots. He also infiltrates the Shinsengumi and Matsudaira's home. Even though he always plays the goofball, it's pretty clear to me that he is conflicted about his terrorist activities and is more interested in gaining a broader perspective, rather than actually trying to topple the government.
One of the best side character in gintama which has a balance of being funny and still having Depth as a character one of the most enjoyable characters to see in gintama fr.
@@ShiroyashaVince I can't say that he even a side character due to it's solid character building and depth but that also applied to alot of Gintama characters
Katsura is my top favorite in Gintama. Good looking, funny kinda silly, cute, chivalrous, respectful towards everyone men and women, has leadership capabilities. Dude got whole package
To me, I read Katsura's silliness as an attempt to reach out to Gintoki. Following the war, the one he cared the most about was Gin who had to be at the epicenter of their master's death. Probably rightfully so, Katsura perceived Gintoki would be traumatized from this and need the assistance. However due to several unfortunate events Katsura lost track of Gintoki. He used that time to build a small army to fight the amanto, hoping the familiarity of that action would draw in the drifting Gintoki. Instead he eventually finds Gintoki in Edo, living in a snack house. So he tries to present to Gintoki a place where his friend can heal, not realizing yet that Gintoki already has found a family and is already slowly healing. His offer rejected, Katsura tries a few more times until he can find for certain that Gintoki should be safe in his new home. However the wild behavior of his new family remind Kotaro of the other side of Gintoki, the snarky fool. Katsura's first few appearances in the series aren't That off the wall silly, not like he would become. He instead adopts this personality in an attempt to reach out to Gintoki, to let his friend know that there is still someone here for him. Whether at any point he succeeded or not is difficult to say, however we do get a glimpse of a possible answer in the old age story, when he and Gintoki are made old men. The two stick together and speak like the oldest and closest of friends. Their hostility all but gone, and all that really remains are jokes they find funny between each other.
If I'm not wrong, during the arc where gintoki was framed for killing the shogun, there was a scene where yamazaki was found with a dying message and katsura's message was there as well. Gin said "Zura picked the worst time to hang out!" Or something similar, if my memories are correct then that would mean Katsura and Gintoki became friends again
I think one of the key factors for Katsura's change in his mindset to how to lead the Joui rebels is not not only his meeting with Gintoki but also with Ikmatsu, After meeting Gintoki there is certainly a subtle change in his mindset but it only after his meeting with ikumatsu does he reevaluate his ideals and path he must take.
It’s amazing how characters like Katsura can be so interesting, yet somewhat subtle. It really makes the messages feel that much more rewarding. Especially someone like Katsura who can go from super silly to super badass. Awesome work as usual, my friend. Hope you’re doing well, dude!
ahhh I'm so glad to find this video !!! there is so little serious fan content and analyses (actually this is the only analysis I found in English) about Zura ... I personally believe that Katsura's character setting is so sophisticated that the author had to make him act dumb. Like the anime can't have a character whose fighting skills are on par as the protagonist, has an actually decent dream, and is strategic and smart appearing every two episodes. Especially when the protagonist is a MADAO. Especially when Katsura's looks are very popular in East Asian beauty standards. But the author also needs someone to keep reminding us of the world setting and Gintoki's past. So the author tries to make him seem less important by throwing him in a bunch of daily arcs that are meaningless while letting Katsura slowly incorporates Gintoki's joui past with his present life. Remember how Gintoki keeps avoiding joui stuff at first ? It's interesting how characters with similar settings like Sakamoto and Takasugi only appeared in major plot episodes, what am I saying ahaha. I also got really upset when Katsura was revealed to be the prime minister so that he can 'die' and divert the hatred away from Princess Soyo, I feel like Katsura never did anything for himself...and the final movie skipped that part of the manga so all people knows is Zuramp instead of a masterplan Anyways thanks for sharing this, I just finished Gintama a few weeks ago I hope this channel is still going to produce videos like this ahaha, Gintama seems pretty dead to me tbh but anyways
Thanks so much glad you enjoyed, since this is mainly a gintama/Monogatari channel expect lots more gintama content on top of the many vids already on the channel, I so agree that Katsura was used masterfully from a writing perspective and is just an amazing character in all senses of the word
During Katsura first appearance him and his group literally do terrorism instead of pranks, so i I think if Gintoki didnt meet Katsura in the very early episode of Gintama Katsura definitely ended up like Takasugi

Yeah in Japan you usually refer to people by their last names, it's only when you are really close to someone that you use their given name, most Gintama characters are called their last names (only big exceptions are Gintoki, Kagura and Shinpachi)

Katsura is so goofy that by only hearing his theme song you immediately smile and i love him for that
