@@dwfan91- you're right i checked again and she's no longer the master according to wikipedia but in my opinion she's probably a time lord or one of the doctor's friend, To me, the weirdest thing isn't 'Never seen a TARDIS before?' but when she said 'good luck' to Ruby before she entered the TARDIS. It means she's wishing her good luck as a companion of the Doctor, so it breaks the fourth wall even more than the camera glance. But the wink still reminds me of Missy though.

He's not with them. Bi-generation was like a fork in the road. New face, new life. 14 stepped away from the responsibility so he could live. While 15 is like this new guy free of most of the trauma. The only outstanding thing being all Timeless Child stuff. That's the lasting trauma/mystery he has to carry. Tennant has to process all the stuff from the memory wipe onwards. And 15 has the room to explore pre-memory wipe.

It was good. Was it amazing? Nah. But Ncuti and Millie sold it and that’s the main point. She briefly mentions losing her job, so maybe it's a more optimistic Rose? They could have done far better, but there is some decent foundation to expand upon.

The quibble I have is that the Doctor seems to be doing the same thing that Nine did with Rose - a quick exit with the family not knowing where this teen has gone, the family will be worried sick. The Ncuti Gatwa Doctor was made to seem like he cares about the family but now all of a sudden maybe the Doctor just flat out doesn't care any more than Nine did when Rose first got on the Tardis.

Just a quick thing about the celebrity guest star: that's Davina McCall who (among other things) is famous for presenting Long Lost Family, a show about people finding family members they've never met (like birth parents or siblings they were separated from).
That's why Ruby is on the set of a TV show because it's supposed to mirror Long Last Family. I actually thought that bit was quite clever/funny tbh!

  • @edwardreed67
    @edwardreed67 6 месяцев назад +39

My main problem with this episode is Ruby herself and the tone.
In the Behind the scenes, Russel described Ruby, how she's an orphan and she doesn't know who her birth mum is yadda yadda yadda. But heres the thing, he didn't really mention what her character was. She is almost entirely defined by her backstory. She's got personality, but really its just the companion 'sassy' default settings slightly lightened. She has no world view that can be broken or conflicted with, no aspiration for anything on an individual level EXCEPT that of her past. And therefore, her relationship with the Doctor feels kinda bland. Like they just instantly like each other for pretty much no reason and she just excepts the fact that Goblins are real and has no real sense of priorities. Even the resolution at the end has absolutely no influence from her, its all the Doctor and all the location of the backstory.
What are her motivations? Hobbies? Goals? OUTSIDE of her past? We're given glimpses of her life, but they don't really indicate anything unique. She's rootable because of her backstory, where she stands in the plot, not because of her character itself in the established norm, and i feel like this problem extends to the tone.
Russel wants to make Doctor Who more fantastical, but that clashes against his grounded sensibilities. The Goblins are not a reflection of the Doctor's world and the normal world mixing together, like the Autons or Judoon or Adipose. They're just Goblins, only relatable to Ruby because of the whole baby orphan thing. And so, because of that, she is just an extension of the overarching plot rather than a separate character. Like Amy Pond for example. Not as bad as Amy obviously, she at least has a bit of a personality in comparison to Amy. But thats the thing, this episode, really, isn't about her. In short, I wanted 'Ruby Sunday' and instead got 'The Church on Ruby Road'.

To be fair we only just met her and we already know she's in a band, is charismatic with her neighbours, has a deep connection to her mother and grandmother and cares deeply for her foster siblings. Yes she is curious about her bio family but it didn't feel that central to me. Her chemistry with the doctor seemed more intrigue and admiration for him because she doesnt know him yet, their friendship can exactly be perfect sassy chums straight away

    • @LauraGS564
      @LauraGS564 6 месяцев назад

Stop acting like a fool. She had good character traits other than her backstory, you just simply chose to ignore that. She has a great family dynamic which lets her be a good character already. And she is fucking 19, you dimwit. What world view is she supposed to talk about in the first episode? And her chemistry with the doctor was amazing, how is it bland when she already has some similarities with the Doctor? is this punk serious? lol. And this was just first episode, you did not know everything about Rose or Martha in the first episode.
And the goblin thing happened because of the myth aspect of last episode. Doctor Who has made stories about other ideas such as magic before. Imagine being this retarded.

I think you're expecting a bit much from just one episode. Did we find out Rose's hobbies and goals in the first episode? Amy's? Donna's or Clara's? We knew Martha wanted to become a doctor since she was a medical student and that played a part in the plot, but that was an exception. We don't usually get a whole character breakdown of every aspect of who they are. And yes she's in a band... that's a hobby. More than I know about the hobbies of most other companions tbh.

It definitely exceeded my expectations! At first the singing really threw me off especially when the Doctor and Ruby joined it but when I rewatched the episode it was just fun, felt like they were performing just to trick the goblins into thinking they’re in on the goblin hijinks. Loved the more complex cinematography overall like a personal favourite (as i reach the end of the vid i realise im in direct disagreement with you lmao) was the part where the goblins go back in time to eat Ruby and the lighting in her flat shifts as the Doctor realises what’s happened, great stuff! Agree with what you said about Ruby seemingly having no reason to run off with the Doctor, hopefully they’ll expand on it. Probs my biggest concern rn is how they’ve finished filming season 2 before season 1 has even come out, which means they literally arent capable of taking any feedback and putting it into the show, i think its really important for them to consider what people actually think before moving on and continuing production. Anyway, another BANGER video from you bro, glad you enjoyed it too!

I loved this ep!! One thing that worries me though is Disney's complete FUMBLING of everything so far. The anniversary specials were marked as specials 1-3, which is fine.... but this one is marked as special 4. Unless Season 1 (i know... ew) manages to do super well as an introduction to BOTH the doctor AND ruby.... it's not going to bode well for the "new era" as its going to be SUPER confusing for new viewers. This episode is genuinely as good as Rose in setting up parts of doctor who for new viewers, but it's marked as special 4??? Not even as "The Doctor Who Christmas Special" (trust me, Disney loves their Christmas specials and putting them in collections, why didn't they do that???) It is so concerning to me. Specials 1-3 are a bad place to start, but with this numbering and confusing messaging.... it's almost saying THOSE are the new jumping off point. There has also been no advertising that I've seen, which is concerning even moreso because well... when the supposed "big marketing push" for season 1 starts, where are they going to point new viewers? Season 1 which won't be able to introduce either of them as well as the special did, to special "four" which will be jarring when they see it's a christmas special being pushed in Spring months after release, or the anniversary specials which will have the months after release problem AND confuse the hell out of new viewers. I'm... worried about the shows Disney+ future, to say the least.

9:18 I personally disagree on this point specifically, I don't think that just because the 15th doctor has had "therapy" thanks to 14 and bigeneration that doesn't mean that the trauma of his past won't have any affect on him at all anymore, sure he can deal with it and things involving his past better now rather than just running from the problem or keeping himself constantly busy like how past doctors (mostly 13 and 14) did, like he can still feel and express deep emotions, especially when they involve things he would relate to on a personal level, and this doctor in particular seems like one who's very open to expressing his emotions fully. I feel like it was perfectly reasonable for him to cry when he did, but those are just my thoughts on the matter.

She encouraged/tempted Issac Newton to the tree until he came up with a great idea as if she knew something was going to happen. Then in this one she knew the Tardis and encouraged Ruby to follow him. She's definitely meddling with time behind the scenes and the goblins with their own time manipulation was another indicator of this. Time will tell but Russell did say there's a reason the intro has that strange effect when the Tardis interacts with the vortex, as if time is changing whenever the Doctor interacts with it. Theyll have to deal with the fact that Ruby and the doctor were never supposed to meet and that their meeting started the chain reaction for whatever big bad thing this is leading up to.
Not to mention that it has been almost 50 years since the monk's last tv appearance with the Doctor. And I'm willing to bet she did place Ruby at that church as a way to set the dominoes in place. I wonder if it will turn out that she actually STOLE Ruby from her birth parents. Maybe even wiped them from time which is why there's no trace.
Just a theory but it makes more sense to me than the Rani 🤷

The specials till now have felt different from the normal Doctor Who I would expect, I’m unsure if this is a good thing going foreword, naturally change is great, well Doctor Who has thrived and survived with change. I feel like the highlight of this episode was definitely the family dynamic, my favourite character has got to be the grandma. Looking foreword to the future uploads on this channel.

Just started watching your videos and i love them, thanks for all your work! Cant wait to hear the rest of your thoughts on the season and to dig through all your thoughts on the series as a whole. You're very insightful and knowledgeable, and i gotta say, i like your opinions (especially the occassional Clara slander, like girl, you were cool just...go away).
So far I'm not sure how i feel about the whole new doctor world, but I'm absolutely loving the performances. I hope the writers can deliver some good payoffs because this Doctor and Ruby are already just great to me and they deserve some demanding episodes. Like did you see Ncuti absolutely ACTING in Dot and Bubble? I didnt love the episode, but damn i loved him. And Rogue? Are you kidding me! Like all new doctors, he's taking some getting used to, but the charm just exudes from him. I kind of wish they hadn't done him so dirty by pairing him up with Tennant, but i imagine the anniversary specials will feel more endearing and happily nostalgic in a couple years.
Anyways, long comment. Just wanted to say thanks!

You talked about how 10 mentioned fate before, but 10 mentions fate in a spiritual sense. When 15 talks about luck here, and how this is new, he's talking about essentially a new language being added into the universe. New methods of science introduced into the universe since the Toymaker. As he makes it clear it's not magic. Essentially the universe has introduced loads of new scientific fields, and this one focuses on luck and coincidence. I love the idea that the Doctor is no longer all knowing. We FINALLY get to see him figure out larger questions related to the universe instead of just smaller problems.
It's a quick moment, but Ruby being in a band is why I think she broke out into song with the Doctor. She's clearly musical herself, and also why I think music might play a large role in the coming season. There's the juke box in the Tardis and the new villain who's costume has piano keys on it. So it might be that each episode deals with a new language introduced into the universe, with the overarching language being music.

It wasn’t the best DW ep and there were some rough parts but I absolutely loved it. After years of having a Doctor that doesn’t feel or have the aura of the Doctor for so long( Jo Martin did for me but she wasn’t the main one) it’s so refreshing and amazing seeing Ncuti instantly have that from the giggle and even more so here. I can fully understand why RTD Moffat and everyone who saw him said that he was instantly the Doctor he is truly terrifyingly good. I love how the salt thread from WBY has seemingly opened up the universe to other worldly and beyond our understanding of the universe threats(I don’t know if this is actually the case just my own head canon). Also other people might have a problem with it but I love the extra gadgets the Doctor now hopefully has it always felt like a missed opportunity that an super advanced ancient time traveller only had one tool to help him and I love how short and limited the life cycle of these gadgets felt I hope it continues. Mille was great and I love her and her family’s dynamic and while I still despise the timeless child RTD is doing more than Chibby did in exploring fleshing and actually making me warm to it even though I hope it’s retconned as just a prank asap

You said about Wild Blue Yonder that it made you excited for Doctor Who again (I think) but for me it was this episode. I love David Tennant as much as the next guy but WBW just felt like more of the same (in a good way but also in a predictable way). This episode felt energized and interesting in a way I haven't felt with DW in a long while. The musical number was fun and campy and I thought the episode did a good job of making me care about Ruby and her story. Ncuti, of course, was a triumph in every frame. That man can do no wrong from what I've seen so far. I get what you mean about the stacking mysteries and how disappointing it'll be if we don't get all the answers but I can't help but be intrigued. My main concern is him pulling some wack shit with 14 in the future and forcing Tennant in again where he isn't needed because, again, Ncuti is killing it. Overall, it was quite a fun ride with a fun new alien species with an interesting power base and an electric Doctor and interesting enough companion. Obviously not the bestest episode of DW ever to exist but I think its perfectly functional as an intro and Christmas episode and I'm exceedingly excited to see where we go from here :)

Ruby feels like a fab Moffat companion, with a touch of Russel to make her more grounded and relatable.
To me, this episode restored my faith somewhat in the new series. While I loved lots about the three 60th specials, I thought the rollercoaster pacing was scary for the future of storytelling. Seems it was made clear she wanted to go with the Doctor once she worked out he is a Time Traveller. How different is Ruby's motivation for time travel (to discover her parents) than Rose's (to meet her father)?.
I disliked the full on fantasy (just calling it "different" physics didnt even cut it with Ruby!), but the main problem was the pacing was really all over the place and it wasnt just Ruby's reactions to events that felt unreal, creating an "uncanny valley" feel. Was it fairytale, was it 'slice of life'?
Has the Toymaker's realm/salt at the edge of the Universe fundamentally changed the laws of reality and how people interact with the "unnatural"?
Tonally, I was left non-plussed by what the vibe they are going for.

I have a pet peeve with adoption stories about wanting to find birth parents. I get that's a real thing that happens. I just think it's a bad message to send to adopted kids (you're not complete without birth parents). I don't know what's up with all the musicality of the show lately. The story felt very been there, done that. And I kind of wish RTD was looking to the future. Instead he seems to be borrowing elements from his predecessors. I hope the show doesn't turn too magical. It'll be too similar to Moffat's fairly tale elements.

It shouldn’t be canon and ruins the lore. But I’ll continue watching. I think Ncuti needs to refine his doctor a little bit. Not fully convinced yet but he’s okay. There are some bits of dialogue where it wasn’t clear what he was saying. Also wasn’t keen on the musical scene as it felt forced and out of place. I was positively surprised by this episode. I thought visually it was a bit bland (idk aside from the church scenes it was just really bright all episode). I came in expecting it to be doodoo but it was good. I thought Ruby was so excited by the prospect of "time travel" because it means that she could go back in time and find out who her parents were? Maybe it was just the placement of the dialogue but I really gathered that from when she had her little monologue. I think it was a cool, creative story with the stuff about coincidences and the scene where the mum kept going on about them before the timeline cracked. I love the idea that the Doctor had no idea what he was talking about when explaining all the Goblin stuff to her on the ladder and he was kinda figuring it out at the same time. This and Wild Blue Yonder "make up" for the other 2 stinkers so the average quality is like in the middle. I am excited for May. The rapport between them felt like it came about a bit too quick but I guess you can only do so much in an hour runtime. Some cool cinematography I will say and no real "bad" vfx. And the song was a banger tbf.

The new sonic looks like a computer mouse and not really like a sonic screw driver more like the sonic lance I guess but as long as it’s not putting up shields it’ll be fine. I didn’t like the 13ths sonic at first but I grew on me I’m sure this one will to. Also can’t wait for the new season

There’s too many mysteries? .. like seriously what kind of fan doesn’t like some mysteries in their dr who? so there’s quite a few, sure, but RTD is capable of managing these things we know that from his time as show-runner in the past.. i feel unfortunately that’s the issue really, you don’t seem to like RTD and by extension his past eras, that’s the vibe you give off.. now yes, if these mysteries never get revealed and we have loose ends and unresolved plot holes you will be right, but we ain’t there yet-give the show a chance to set the stage and see if it can pay it off later ..
the episode was pretty good overall even by your own admittance but you don’t like the bi-generation thing and the 60th specials so you are dragging your heels rather than going with the flow and giving it a chance to prove itself.. I suggest you go into the next series by dropping how you felt about the 60th specials and just take it for what it is

Some for sure but there must be almost 10 concurrently at this point. Surely I'm not crazy for wanting at least one resolution before going on to the next one. This episode added 3 on its own! Even you as an RTD superfan must admit that's a little excessive

We were watching the club scene where the doctor was dancing with the skirt/kilt and my dad walked in and asked „is the doctor gay now?“ lol
He didn‘t mean it negatively, he was just curious.
