      @@GarethDanks Hey Gareth nice video, great footage, appreciate your attitude to safety but don't bunch all people who where trainers in one box, there are lots of mountain people who don't where boots and happily take on many challenges without them. Boots do have negatives as well. Its easy to form an open without appreciating why people do what they do. I understand that Snowdon has a lot of ill equipped people and that is a risk but if your giving comments be more specific.

    • @mbmountainexperiences
      @mbmountainexperiences 4 года назад +1

      @Benjamin McCann who said anything about wearing stupid footwear, there is a whole load of companys producing mountain trainers, worn by fell runners and mountain guides and mountain rescue. If you have your preferences thats ok just dont bunch people who choose not to wear boots with people who are ill equiped. I spend most days in mountain evnironments, i was just pointing out that it is peoples choice to equip themselves how they want.

      @@mbmountainexperiences one of the MIC instructors at Glenmore lodge only wears approach shoes all year round. It’s not always what’s on your feet. I have injured myself often wearing the right footwear, yet never with “unsuitable”. Your most important bit of gear is that lump of grey-matter between your ears. Bob Hawkes MIC (r.I.p.) used to climb in wellies...

    I did the walk two days ago. Scared the shit out of me. I couldn't even stand up when I got to the top, took about 15 mins just to do that. Then when I made my attempt across the ridge, I crawled much of it on my bum. Never have I been so terrified. I managed to safely bypass all three Pinnacles - the third one looked horrific. I'm a photographer and took my drone too - so scared the drone was never unpacked and I took only a handful of photos.

    Great video and brilliant drone footage showing the true scale and difficulty of the climb. I have been a subscriber for over a year and this came up after watching a video of someone getting stuck on the crawl across the ridge and getting support off an experienced climber so shows the mental part of the hike. Hats off for doing this.

    • @GarethDanks
      @GarethDanks  4 года назад +2

      Yes I saw that video it is very scary there and the dangerous part of it is as I mentioned in the video if you went there being overconfident you don’t know how you will respond mentally so it’s crucial that you have people with you who are experienced and can help

    Well done , great video . You are right about correct footwear . I go to the Lakes at least once a year , it amazes me how many people wear the wrong thing . We were just coming down from a walk on The Old Man at Coniston and this guy with sandals on says " how far to the top " . I advised him to turn around because the ground was going to get a lot harder to walk on with sandals . He didn't take my advice.....just hope he didn't get hurt on his walk ! Thanks again , great upload 👍

    I haven't done any climbing in my life and when I came to UK my mate took 3 of us to Snowdonia to climb cribgoch. I had rucksack with beer in it and Adidas running trainers. I think We climbed the most difficult path possible, it was vertical mostly with rocks falling down from them being above me.
    I was shitting bricks like the rest and we were so happy when we reached the lake , like the biggest achievement in our lives

    Top Man - Well done Gareth! You’ve got a lot more nerve than me on that scramble up and knife edge especially as you have the fear too- I think that’s why I enjoy your vlogs so much - it’s like living out the experience from home. Just an aside since you love landscapes and your journey on the ridge reminded me of a video by a mountain biker “Danny Macaskill - The Ridge”; I think you’ll like it as it’s in a fantastic scenery and has great atmospheric music. cheers again, Steve.

  • @LordHeath1972
    @LordHeath1972 6 лет назад +1

    Excellent video! I am scared of heights and I recently climbed up and walked across Crib Goch (on my RUclips channel). Forget what you may have read about how nasty it is.... it really wasn't that bad at all! Sure, you are conscious of the height but don't dwell on it. Be confident, and stay focused on what you are doing and you'll be fine. Trust me, it's not as bad as it looks.... and I was really afraid of it before I did it. But one point which others have made which I will agree on is never underestimate it. Respect her and you'll be fine. It's such an adrenaline rush and sense of personal achievement to get up and across the ridge.

    • @GarethDanks
      @GarethDanks  6 лет назад +1

      Exactly mate. Such a huge sense of achievement at the end. I was sad it was over tho! Great fun! I can’t wait to complete the loop 😊👍🏻

    • @LordHeath1972
      @LordHeath1972 6 лет назад +1

      Your photography was brilliant by the way, the contrasts, the b&w stuff and you really captured the beauty of the mountain. As for the loop, the Horseshoe, it is a great adventure. One thing to mention, don't take Y Lliwedd too lightly. She requires some pretty good scrambling and climbing to attack her from the Snowdon side. Also, from the Snowdon summit there is a (steep) shortcut down the scree onto the Watkin path if you don't want to descend via Rhyd Ddu path's junction with Watkin. Do the Horseshoe, take your camera, then have yourself a good rest at the Pen Y Pass Youth Hostel with a dinner and drink..... it's what I did and it was the best day of my life (video is on my channel by the way). Good luck mate.

    I recently did crib goch not knowing what i was going into. Off 3 hours sleep, in my converse, jeans and a white vans jumper i went up with some mates. well i can say it was the hardest thing i have done. I didnt know about the if you slip you kinda die parts. But from my cscs card course about going up ladders to keep 3 points of contact and i applied that and it worked. If anyone is thinking of doing this. Take food water maybe a first aid kit and go slow there's no rush and breath take in the views and always stay calm. (:

    If you come from Crib Goch you have to go up Snowdon to walk down Watkin Path as its the opposite side of the mountain..... You go past the cafe at the top to the steps to start the Watkin path or LLiwedd (the last part of the horseshoe)....

    Hi Gareth. Respect buddy !! I'm a bit too old (and sensible ) to do this now but watching you brings back lots of happy memories of when I wasn't as cautious and did it regularly in summer. Bang on with the safety message as well - not a climb to be taken lightly or without the correct kit. Glad you completed it safely and enjoyed the challenge. Cracking video Gareth. Thanks for sharing.

    Gareth a massive big up to you for doing that and addressing the fear. What you did manage to to capture image wise with the XT-2 and drone was superb given you had more than enough to concentrate on. Also not had time to comment on the previous three vlogs again each one gets better and better. You probably are the best I've seen when it comes to content and all done with a great bit of humour. Well done mate and keep it up.

    Well done Gareth, that looks some challenge. I need to face Striding Edge in The Lakes. Similar ridge line with big drops either side. You still managed to get some cracking shots with the low lying clouds and side light. Important message to stay safe and wear the proper clothing. There’s a lot of people out there who think mountains like this are like a stroll in the park. Good work Gareth 👍

    Excellent, looked like Saturday or Friday? Was going the other direction Saturday, Nant Gwynant to Pen-Y-Pass via the summit. How damn hot was it?!!! Beautiful Welsh sunshine by the bucket-load.
    Saw many people going appropriately light and fast with Camelbaks and daypacks with nutrition and safety gear, but worryingly far too many with nothing but a half empty plastic water bottle and the (incorrect) clothing they stood in. As a long-time outdoorsy-type familiar with Snowdonia this deeply bothered me.
    For me and my partner, we were on the opposite side of the scale. Both Sarah and I have knee/hip joint issues and find long duration often works out easier for us despite the considerable extra stuff needed, since we can go slow and pause often. Consequently we were carrying 50 lb each for overnighting and we hoped to catch a good sunset/sunrise or cloud inversion. Too much gear? Not really, my camera only weighed 6 lbs - the rest was only the essentials we needed to spend 2 days on a mountain, stay safe and enjoy it.
    Water for us was a question of carrying 5 litres between us and refilling and purifying at every opportunity. The glorious weather certainly upped our water usage, requiring I take a walk back down with empty containers to restock, then re-ascending to where my partner and our bags were.
    Watkins final section was very loose, and I had to sherpa my partners gear up, come back down empty and ascend again with my gear. We summitted in glorious evening light and then after a break, descended to find a quiet spot to pitch, resupply water, cook dinner and rest for the night. Sunday was a short and pleasant stroll down from Glaslyn to Pen-y-Pass, followed by the bus back to our car in Nant Gwynant.
    It was an epic weekend, very challenging - this was Sarah's second time up a mountain and her first time carrying overnight gear on such a route - but still had plenty of time to enjoy the views and watched many other groups go past us, only to pass us again four hours later when they were coming back down.
    You are totally right on the mental challenge, it's the hardest thing for anyone to conquer. Going with very experienced, well equipped and knowledgable people is essential, for both your physical safety and mental well-being.
    Keep on pushing yourself, making great videos of beautiful places and inspiring people to climb their own personal mountains.
    PS, please help preach the gospel about people not leaving their waste in our National Parks.

      @GarethDanks  6 лет назад +1

      Good heavens! you win the award for longest comment EVER haha! thanks James!! glad you and Sarah had a good time! fair play to you for helping her out mate!! bet that nearly ruined you! - yes there are far too many people often with kids dressed irresponsibly! we seen a family of 5/6 all with open toed sandals on.. RIDICULOUS! very frustrating! we carried a bit of rubbish down too! always the case! some parts of snowdonia are TERRIBLE tho! need addressing seriously!!
      Thanks so much for your AMAZING comment buddy! hope you see you both on the hills! :-)

    I couldn't make it passed 3:29 ..I had boots I was not too confident with ..

    My nephew who was with me ran up eyes closed begged me not to turn around..
    I couldn't go passed the wall ..I might try again..
    It's hard really hard but easy for some like my nephew he loves scrambling lives for it .. my kids kept flashing in front of me my legs starting shaking I believe we were 870 meters up,, u cant scrambles crib goch half hearted .. after this we went done the honister slate mine Ferata (now that's Hard)..
    Lifes short go out go have fun ...

    Well done on conquering your fear. It looks like you had a decent day for it and were able to record great footage along the way.
    I did Crib Goch (and the entire Horseshoe) for the first time with three friends on Sunday. Where possible, I followed the path beside the knife-edge but, when you can't avoid that ridge, it really is quite scary! Good to see the information boards contain advice on what to pack (including proper walking boots with ankle support). I noticed a large number of people wearing climbing shoes; some of whom were walking on top of the ridge for the most part!
    Have you done Tryfan, out of interest? That was another mountain and scramble that we enjoyed.

    • @GarethDanks
      @GarethDanks  6 лет назад +1

      Hey Olly mate. Thanks for the comment buddy. Yeah I would have loved to continue round. Hopefully revisit soon. I’ve not been up tryfan yet no. Glyders which is behind it. Tryfan looks epic 😊👍🏻

    • @LordHeath1972
      @LordHeath1972 6 лет назад +1

      I did Tryfan for the first time the day before I did Crib Goch for the first time in August 2018 (both videos on my channel).... and the one piece of advice I'd offer with regards to Tryfan is to take your time and stay to the left. Having done both of the mountains, I would have to say Tryfan was more physically challenging especially the actual climbing. The reward of Adam & Eve at her summit is exhilarating; I cannot describe it adequately. If you do Tryfan you have to do 'the cannon' too. Keep left as you ascend and you cannot miss it. Also, if you tackle Tryfan from the North side, the first 15 minutes of walking are really hard on your leg muscles too but it does even out a little after a while. Good luck.

      hey there thanks for the comment! glad you enjoyed!! its a relatively short walk to the start of the climb up.. just over an hr id say.. the climb up was tough at times as its very steep but only 30 mins id say.. but no once at the top your going along the ridge.. its very steep to come back down that route.. although i know people do it.. id never try as you'd be going down backwards.. the route along is fine tho! then its easy ish the other side :-)
