Popp's tone here is shimmeringly beautiful, but it's a recording and the tempo is too slow. She's the best here anyway, Gruberova's pitchy, Damrau's the best charaterisation, but Lucia's beauty of tone wins
Edda Moser is BY FAR the best Queen of the night. Second is Deutekom and third is Lucia Popp. The other ladies have no business singing this role. Popp, Deutekom and Moser all three had HUGE voices in the theater with a lot of volume en heft not only in the upper notes but they were also famous for the meaty middles and robust low register especially Lucia Popp’s lows and this is what a soprano needs for the role. The Queen is a very low role except the big aria has the high Fs. The role is design for at least a spinto voice(Moser) but if lyric then it has to be an exceptional lyric voice like Popp’s or Deutekom.
i have also read that apparently Popp's orchestra goes through the piece slower than others, and i believe it allowed to bring more weight and presence within her performance, she's such a great singer !
Very interesting. One thing that might be useful and interesting when doing comparisons is to reference the age of each singer at the time of the recording, as well as the size/type of voice. From memory, my impressions are that Damrau has the biggest voice, Popp was always warm and silky and Gruberova went on too long.
@freyaCaseyOpera Its true, there is a lot of difference between recording in the studio and on stage, as you said. There is a RUclips video with the title 'Lucia Popp_Der Hölle Rache Kocht In Meinem Herzen (1970 live)', in which there is a live recording of Lucia Popp singing, and, unfortunately, she misses a lot of notes, probably because of the pressure of singing on stage. But for me, she still the best of all. Great analysis, I had never stopped to reflect on these details
Three of my favorite coloratura soprani in the same clip! You made my morning. :) Could you please also do a comparison of three Pamina as well? Doing Ach, ich Fuehl's?
I think you're right. Yes, the doll song is awesome. Since I recently performed it, I watched Gruberova's version, too. She's amazing, but not my absolute favorite.
You bring things out so well - fab. I would agree with your assessments (somewhat reluctantly as I just adore Edita) but I would not have said that Q of the N was necessarily an aria that Edita's fabulousness relied upon compared to casta diva, Lucia, Gilda and the nightingale arias.
Damrau seemed a little rough, a little rushed. Those accents on “Tochter” were to me jarring. The highest note sections were indeed shattering, but flowing, nicely shaped. A singular accomplishment. Her intonation was right on, with great, without wobbles. Superb diction, with appropriate correct ending “rs”. I think all of them were delightful, with their own strengths.
Popp slides and you didn't mention it. Popp's voice is smaller...and a studio recording is much easier than a live performance. All three are great though ...
I love Lucia Popp, but this role is not deally suited for her even though her high f 's are flawless and her execution of Mozart is totally on point. Die konigin der nacht needs the dynamic voice timbre of Diane Damrau to create the mood of the character.
How about comparing them with a top bel canto trained singer? Check out Rae Woodland’s video on RUclips “Rae Woodland, Der Hölle Rascher, Queen of the Night”. In her prime, Woodland is said to have been equal in many ways to Callas (at least according to her student at channel “Phantoms of the Opera”). The description explains the recording is slurred due to amateur recording equipment, but it should suffice for a comparison.
From these 3 Gruberova sounds the here because it's live and she's not using vocal gimmicks and special manufactured effects, she really sings. Damrau is the only German singer here so her diction sounds more pronounced and nuanced, but honestly I think she sounds uneasy and un-natural, and nowadays she already sounds awful and ruined even though she's only in her early 50's. Lucia Popp also sounds good and natural but it's a studio recording. But there are much better Queens of the night out there from from all of them..
What a great job! Thank you. Do you think you would be willing to do an analysis on Gruberova's Semiramis? Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/b7e-V-BLDK8/видео.html
The core of Lucia Popp's voice is so much more beautiful than Gruberova's (and therein was the problem with Gruberova for her entire career). Damrau, ugh. Listen to her Traviata "sempre Libera" comparison with Sutherland and you can never listen to her again without cringing. She doesn't sing pitches. Just wiggling vibrato without a vocal core. She's a horrible singer.
Damrau is not good. Her vibrato is very bad. Gruberova pinches her high notes and sounds shrill. Popp is the only one singing with a correct open throat and her notes ring…not a proper comparison
Well well well nobody remember really the great and ubique Queen of the night... Just the most populars and comercials singers.... 🙄 Edda Moser is the real Queen of the night darling 😉 This Girls bored...

As just a 'beginner' to listening and appreciating opera, what a wonderful video. It' s been an education and you present it beautifully. Thank you.
The are all the winners.
Each brought something to the performance, but hands down Diana Damrau was the best of the best!

Thank you for this comparison. Such talented singers
Damrau is dynamite. Great mastery to keep her vocal control while throwing such intense drama.
Indeed! I can't get over how she did that last high Fs series while on her knees and bending forward. The scariest Koenigin in memory, for sure.
Diana Damrau - the best

@ Lucia Popp had a HUGE voice in the theater according to a lot of critics. She did not record well.
Natalie Dessay❤❤
Cristina Deutekom is by far the best on recording 🎉 I always enjoy your analysis.
Edita Gruberová a Lucia Poppová dve slovenské legendy operného spevu.
I love Damrau, Popp and Cristina Deutekom (her laser beam high notes, effortless and piercing).

Who sang it best?
Deutekom, hands down!

Keep in mind that Miss Popp did drop to a Mezzo sop later on in years.
On a totally different level I also love Robin Schlotz' version with the Tölz Boys Choir - I love the conductor's hand signal 15 second in "steady!".
Damrau pour moi!
Gruberova throws in a tiny bit of operette.
Can you do the Dull song.
I think you're right. Yes, the doll song is awesome. Since I recently performed it, I watched Gruberova's version, too. She's amazing, but not my absolute favorite.

Such a shame that Erika Miklósa is not among these divas during the analysis. She is the one who sang this role the most time of all.
I love Natalie Dessay interpretation. Maybe not the best voice, but, for me, the best actress
My not very humble opinion... For me the best rendition is Deutekom's (Cristina Deutekom)
I would love to see a video of o zittre nicht the other Queen of the Night Aria with C Deutekom I would even
say it is more challenging than this.

Lucia Popp seemed far more at ease... though really interesting inflection on the part of Damrau which brings in another dynaic dimension...
