    The reason this remake worked is because it showed they LIKED the original. I don't get that vibe from the numerous other remakes since then.

      I don't think the problem with most modern remakes is that they didn't like the original. I think its often because they liked the original TOO MUCH and were scared of making changes that would offend its fanbase. See: the Robo-Cop remake and the King Kong remake for very good examples of this.

    Speaking of the professor, I think more people identify with the Eddie Murphy version better than the original, a big guy trying lose weight to look better for the woman he loves. I get that many people are social awkward but when your both social awkward and overweight, it's even harder for someone to get a date!

      It also works better as a statement on our society. Whilst both professors are academically brilliant, it counts for nought in a society that is very obsessed with image and presentation. To a casual observer, people would be less judgemental of the Lewis version, since a lot of his features are genetic, such as his teeth, his glasses, and his voice; they are beyond his control. But Murphy's version is one that invites a lot more criticism from the casual observer - his appearance is associated with laziness, gluttony, and a lack of self control, so many more people would be dismissive or hostile towards his plight, simply because of that. And it definitely has its roots in his own insecurities - after a lecture where he has made a bit of a fool of himself, he immediately tucks into a Snickers, it shows he does comfort eat, a natural reaction to being embarrassed. Where Lewis' insecurity only really manifests because of genuine bullies, like the student and the dean, Murphy's insecurity comes from a lot of people, not just the bullies.

    The main reason this movie worked as a remake is because everyone involved looks like they LIKED the original and are simply adding a new twist - making the Eddie Murphy (who always respected Lewis) version an alternative instead of a replacement or improvement.The message I get from most remakes is, "We're too cool for the original; here's what they should've done the first time around."

    • @conniethesconnie
      @conniethesconnie 4 года назад +7

      The new version relies too much on the fat suit, special effects and worn out fat jokes.
      I saw the Murphy version first and then watched the original. Despite having been watched second it still seemed less predictable and more creative. The fact that it was dated also helped as it gave it more of a sci-fi feel allowing you suspend disbelief and ignore some of the illogical scenarios.

    • @Vojou345
      @Vojou345 4 года назад +7

      @@conniethesconnie Eh, I like the Eddie version better. For me the final scene is what makes it good. I like the idea of an internal battle where Klump finally stops being a pushover and stands up to his alter ego, refusing to let a jerk like him live , and even though buddy love was about to vanish forever that last line "Nomatter what you got to strut" is a nice message to tell the audience that you have to be proud and confident in yourself. It's a nice twist that an antagonist gives the hero a message of hope before their demise.

      Geoffrey Sorkin Actually Godzilla 2014 has no connections to the original 1954 movie. This is evidenced by the fact that the Legendary Godzilla never attacked Tokyo in 1954, as well as the fact that he’s had his powers since the time of his birth in the Permian Period instead of receiving them after being irradiated by H-bomb testing in the 1950s. Godzilla 2014, Kong: Skull Island, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters are all part of one separate universe and continuity.

    I also think the fat suite helps in helping you to think they ARE two separate people, where the Lewis version is just a costume and hair change it is literally not possible that the Lewis versions’ love interest can’t see the prof. as buddy love it’s a costume change nothing more.
    But with murphy nobody could believe it’s the professor why, it takes YEARS to lose that kind of weight not 3 minutes or whatever it was

    I agree about the ending undercutting the entire morale of the movie. Shortly after Miss Purdie says she wants Julius, she turns and we see the bottles in her back pocket, indicating that she wants both Julius and Buddy. Plus, the sequel to the Lewis movie shows that Buddy was a permanent part of Kelp (he switches between the two with no need to use the potion).

    Murphy´s version was the "safe version" but for that it probably won as it was more consistent. It also had the correct amount of "rollercoaster". Meaning it played really well on the emotional side ( I believe I even got teary eyed during some moment of the film) and had enough slapstick to keep it a comedy, so it had a good balance of comedy with a message at the end of "be yourself". Kind of like a reverse romcom with emphasis on comedy so a comrom?
    On 2 days of a week, Lewis would win if you liked a certain element of a film more. It was more wild, it had more to it, more variation, obviously also being the source material. It did feel a little like Murphy´s version was the "original safe" choice and Lewis tried to one up it though by doing a rehash, not the other way around. Then again I saw Lewises version later than Murphys.

    The irony is that your criticism of Buddy is exactly how he was supposed to be. You were supposed to know that something was off. Everybody did. But nobody in the film could identify just what was wrong. In the context of when the film was made it was exactly what should have been done. And student/teacher relationships were scrutinised a little differently. These were adults...not kids who could be intimidated by a bully teacher. Women/students weren't all victims. Today everybody seems to be a victim.

    Something I love about these old OvN’s is that you can tell Critic really likes (if not loves) both versions of the movies (Willy Wonka vs. Charlie aside), and has fun comparing them. The newer OvN’s don’t, they just feel like Critic is liking one thing the other and complaining about the other. Another person has to give out the positives for the original.
